6 good reasons why you should stop using granules: 1. Health and Safety

Granules are a slip hazard. An accident in the workplace could Iead to serious cost consequences to the company’s time, image and money

2. Save Time and Labour

Granules are very messy and take longer to clean up and dispose off. Secondary absorbents are strong, fast absorbing and quick to clean up

3. Effectiveness

Clay granules just become coated with the liquid, which eventually starts to seep through. Secondary absorbent pads and socks are far more absorbent and far less wasteful. For example, our 3m socks will absorb up to a massive 14L!!

4. Potential Damage to Machinery and the Environment

Granules can be very abrasive and could potentially cause hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of damage if they accidentally enter expensive machinery. Contaminated granules often get trodden around buildings and get spread around yards. They then get washed into drains, leading to contamination of waterways

5. Weight

Bags of granules are heavy and difficult to deploy quickly in the event of a spill. The average weight of a bag of granules is 18–20kg. One box of 100 pads only weighs 8kg and will absorb more than 11 times the amount!

6. Lower Disposal Costs

Used granules take up a lot of space in hazardous waste bins which means the bins have to be emptied more often, resulting in higher disposal costs. Secondary absorbents take up less space and they can be incinerated, which helps to reduce disposal costs

Case Study – Pollution of Waterways

In January 2009, a large water treatment company was fined £125,000 for causing pollution to a popular fishing river. This was caused by the release of chlorine from a sewage works into the river and resulted in wiping out decades of careful restoration in one day. The chlorine spread 3 miles downstream and it took three days to clear two tonnes of dead fish from the river. This fine was criticised by the Environment Agency as ‘not sufficient’ and shows how seriously the pollution of waterways is taken

The company was also ordered to pay £21,335 towards the clean-up and investigation. Their ongoing restoration costs are estimated to be £500,000 over the following 5 years

In 2008, the Environment Agency prosecuted 176 companies and 209 individuals, who were fined a total of £2 million. If a case goes to Crown Court, the fines are unlimited and can include a prison sentence

Important Regulations & Pollution Prevention Guidelines‘The Control of Pollution (Oil Storage) Regulations 2001’ and ‘The Water Environment (Oil Storage) Regulations 2006’, require that secondary containment, such as a bund or drip tray must be provided to catch any leaks and spillages from drums, IBCs and storage tanks. These apply to all premises storing more than 200L on site

As set out by the Environment Agency for England and Wales, the Pollution Prevention Guidelines (PPG 26) for storing and handling of drums and IBCs, defines the requirements that secondary containment must achieve:

The secondary containment must be sufficient to contain at least 110% of the maximum contents of an oil tank, mobile bowser, IBC or drum greater than 200L. Drip trays must be able to hold at least 25% of the drum volume

Where more than one container is stored, the secondary containment should have the capacity of storing 110% of the largest container or 25% of the total volume of the containers being stored, whichever is greater

With this lid, drums can be pre-filled for storage or easier transport. This is a convenient alternative to handling bulky 20L drums

This wide spout model is especially designed for applications where higher lubricant flow is required

Pump

This down-stroke discharge pump delivers 1L for approx 14 strokes. Match with a Utility Lid and a drum. Supplied with an outlet hose and anti-drip nozzle

Different Drum TypesWhich drum handler fork attachment do I use?

• On the right is a guide to the different drum types, which are numbered - look out for the numbers next to each drum handler fork attachment, so that you can choose the correct handler for the drums you store on site

Fork Mounted Drum Grabs• For low to medium volume drum movement

• Fully automatic operation and very simple to use

• Fits onto forks and is secured by clamping screws

• Two different drum grabs available;

- Version for use with steel 205L drums only (ST)

- Version for use with both steel and plastic 205L drums (SP)

Fork Mounted Drum Tines• For transporting 205L drums horizontally

• Stack and un-stack drums stored horizontally

• Fits onto forks and is secured by clamping screws

Fork Mounted Rim Grip Drum Handler• Ideal for handling drums that are packed tightly together

• Steel jaws grip the rim of the drum, allowing the drums to be picked up or set down without spaces between them

• Suitable for use with 205L drums of steel and ‘L’ ring or ‘XL’ ring plastic types

• Rubber cushioned support base available, which helps to reduce damage to drums - POA

• Please specify drum diameter and type, fork width and thickness when ordering
