For the last twenty years the Aspen Schools have been notlcea ble for their lack of a gymna si wn and auditoriwn. We are quite proud that we can lnclude in this annual a picture of the new addition to the school. This addition contains three bright clAssrooms and an auditorium.

Aspen High had lts first Homecoming lhis yur. The affair, spomored by the Student Council, included all the traditional Homecoming affairs wlth .everal refreshing twists added.

Homecoming day started with a parade of class floats led by the school band. Mrs. Gann, Mr. Stein. and Mr. Ste11Zi adjudsed the seventh grade float tbe flDest of the group. A trophy. donated by Mr. Stein, was awarded to the

w1nn1ng clau. At halftime, Gloria Musso, accompanied by hez attendants, Jun Gossard,

Sally Moore, and Louise Biooaz, was crowned queen of the homecoming by

football- captain Dne Rlngte. Aspen entertained CUboodale that night at the Homecoming dance. The

float trophy was tben awarded to tbe seventh grade. Needless to say, everyone

had a most ell,joyable time.

The Aspen Lions Club awarded a full-tuition scbolanhlp to the Aspen Institute of Music to Greg Felnslnger. This scholarship enables Greg to receive Instruction from some of the finest musicians In the world. This is the third year the Uons Club has awarded the scholarship. Any Interested student may participate In the contest by playing a ruunber at a public concezt. Much Interest Is shown by the students- -ten aspiring musicians entered tbe contest this year. Each year our school awards two trophies to the most outstanding senior boy and gul. The Red Mountain Trophy is awarded to the senior boy and girl who have dis-played the most outstandmg combined citizenship and sportsmanship during their four years in high school. The Babe Ruth Trophy is awarded to the senior boy and girl with the most outstanding athletic ability and sportsmanlike attitude during the four years of high school.

In the past few years the Upper Colorado Rlver Valley League has become ooe of the best class "C" leagues in the state.

After several years of defeat our Junior Varsity team gave us new hope in becoming one of the leading teams in the league, by winning several games and losing by a small margin in others.

Jerry Greene and Dick Blanning did some very deceptive playing assisted by the height of Bob Waterman. Greg Livingston showed much improvement during the year.

The basketball team entered the season at a great disadvantage. Due to the late date in which the gymnasium was finished the team had to practice outside with outdoor baskets and snow on the ground.

The team showed much improvement this year despite this disadvantage. This is the first year the team has had a victory in the past two .easons, wlnnlng over DeBeque two times.

The Junior Ski Team competed in four meets tb1s year. The outstanding meet was the Junior Downhill and Slalom team race here in Aspen. In this race both the girls aad the boys team won, adding, for the fl.rst time ln several years, two shiny trophies for the lChool's collection. Besides these meets several members of the team were chosen to compete ln the J\Ulior National Downhill and Slalom Clumpionships.

Mel Hoashmd and Carolyn Slavens, two of the outstanding members on the team, were also chosen as members of the Colorado Sid Team which com-peted against and won easily over twelve other western states.

In the past few years there have been some spectacular skiers from Aspen High School.

Max Marolt was chosen first alternate on the F.I.S. team this year. OUt of a 11 the skiers 1n this country Max was chosen to represent the United States in Are, Sweden.

We think this is quite an accom-plishment, and are really proud of him.

MAX MAROLT

Melvin Hoaglund was the most outstanding Junior boy skier from the Southern Rocky Mountain region for the past two years. He was Junior National Downhill and Slalom Champion in 1953. In 1954 he won three races at Winter Park, The Southern Rocky Mountain Junior Championships, and first 1n the Combined in the Aspen Junior ski race.

MELVIN HOAGLUND

He also represented Colorado in the American Legion Race in Sun Valley. He aided this winning team considerably with a first in the Down-hill and Slalom.

For the third consecutive year the Student Council was organized at the be-ginning of the year.

During the school year the Student Council accomplished many things. They sponsored the Homecoming, an honor roll, many assemblies, a Valentine dance, the '54 annual, weekly radio programs, the student name exchange at Christmas, and a social calendar.

They have made a file which contains all the projects which have been accomplished this past year. They also compiled a history of Aspen's schools beginning in the later 1880's to 1954.

This year the Student Council tried very hard to take on small projects which they felt they could finish and with which they could do a good job. It is their hope that next year their projects will be a little larger and further reaching than they were this year.

The '53-54 band has yielded many fine musicians, two of which have received musical .scholarships for more advanced musical study. This year's band is composed of forty - two members, who, with their director Mr. Gann, gave two fine concerts this school year. The Aspen band attended the annual music contest at Grand Junction, and received a rating of three in sight reading and playing. Several of the band's talented musicians also attended the solo contest at Rifle. They were awarded excellent ratings.

A., I have called you together upon this very serious occasion to listen to our last will and testament and to receive from her hand the various gifts she has to give in her last moments. We entered school in September 1942. The members of the class being: Emma Lou Strong, Glen Smith, Melvin Hoaglund, Beverly Phillips, Claude Conner, Louise Bionaz, Beverly Paulich, Darrell Stapleton, Max Marolt, Jack Skiff, Larry Brand, and Keith Marolt.

Jim Blanning became a member of the class in 1943. He came from Colorado Springs.

David Ringle moved here from his home in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Gloria Musso and Emily Thorpe entered school here in 1949. Gloria came from

Rifle and Emily moved here from Estes Park. Emily was with us for a year and a half, but due to her scholastic ability. went into the class ahead of us.

We entered high school on Spetember 4, 1950. It was, in my opinion, our hardest year in school because of the great change from grade school

We entered our sophomore year with three new members. They were: Audrey Collins, Don Tesitor, and Jerry Gladstone. These three students all left at the end of the school term.

We entered our junior year with twenty students in our class, and were very fonunate in having Mrs. Twining as our sponsor. We were all very happy to have such an excellent sponsor and we all feel very indebted to her.

Marion Clifford entered school this year coming from her former home in Penn-sylvania.

At last we have reached our goal. We started with twenty students. We gained two new students. Robert Moynihan of Denver, and Jean Gossard of Colorado Springs.

Under the capable guidance of Mr. Gann we gave "Our Hearts Were Young and Gay," our senior play.

We are all very happy to have Max Marolt as a member of our class. He was a member of the 1954 F. I. S. team which competed in Sweden this last winter. His achievement in skiing is one that few other persons his age have been able to accomplish.

One of the high points of our school career was the sneak day. The class toured New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, Nevada, and Western Colorado.

I have given the highlights of our years in school and, as I conclude this history, we are all looking forward very much to higher goals in education and life.
