September President’s Letter
Dear EEOS members:
Last month was a very interesting general meeting. Due to our regular meeting venue becoming a voting precinct, we had to look for an alternative meeting place. A big shoutout to Bob and Michael for inviting our society to use their Pavillion at R.F. Orchids.
The speaker was great, he even added a few native ground orchids to the already outstanding raffle table provided also by R.F. Orchids and hand picked by Mike Coronado himself whom was our special guest that night.
We are just a few weeks away from our show: Orchid Jackpot October 5-7 at R.F. Orchids. Volunteers are needed. Please consider to sign up for any day of the show. Shifts are from 9am to 1:15 pm and from 1pm to 5:15pm. This year, for each shift you volunteer you will receive a ticket for a special raffle to be drawn at the October’s general meeting. Remember this is our society, please come and volunteer.
Yours truly,Ochoa

August Judging
It’s been a long time since our judges judged orchids in the heat of summer and in the dark. We held our regular meeting under the tiki hut at R.F. Orchids due to the Extension Center being used as a voting station for elections. We didn’t have the time to set up lights to help our judges, but the atmosphere of showing movies, sharing food, and holding the raffle in a outdoor setting, a rather nostalgic experience of “Old Florida”. It also makes us appreciate air conditioning! The depths of hurricane season is upon us, so remember what to do and have a plan. Previous articles in the judging report addressed how to take care of your orchids before and after a storm. It’s best to have snail bait and your favorite fungicide on hand, so you don’t have to go look for it afterward. If you cannot put your orchids inside, place them on the ground next to your house or a building to protect them from the wind. Put down your snail bait beforehand. After the storm passes, get your orchids back to their benches or wherever they belong and rinse & clean them as soon as possible. You can also apply a fungicide at this time. Make sure they have good air movement at all times.
