Dear Student,

As the President of EF International Academy, I've seen firsthand the impact of an outstanding high school education on a student's life. These are years in which foundations are built, and connections are made — when the decision to invest in yourself can bring great dividends. That success — that future — is now before you.

It's true that attending high school in North America or in the United Kingdom will help you gain admission to top universities. But choosing the right high school is a critical step in the process.

EF International Academy prepares you personally and academically for tomorrow's challenges and opportunities. As an IB World School, EF International Academy is a place where students play an interactive role in the classroom — where there is time to explore passions beyond one's coursework, and a belief that a well-rounded perspective is vital to success later in life. Indeed, with students from 60 nations, EF International Academy is a school with a larger world view — it’s a place where you’ll discover new places and perspectives while meeting interesting people every day.

Our faculty are committed to developing the full potential of each student. This dedicated faculty however is only part of the equation. Our students constantly motivate one another to success. This is a school where you will find inspiration in your fellow peers just as often as you find it in your teachers and your academic curriculum.

I thank you for taking time to learn about our school, and I encourage you to contact our EF International Academy Admissions Office to find out more about our programmes. Though we have four campuses, we are truly one global school community and I look forward to seeing what role you will play in it.

Mark SemanPresident, EF International Academy

60 Nations.4 Campuses.

1 Global School. Diversity amplifies learning. With students from over 60 nations, there is no school on the planet as diverse as EF International Academy. Learning alongside world-class peers from around the globe, our students encounter new cultures, perspectives, and beliefs in every single classroom exchange. Diversity enables students to think critically about the world and their place in it, encouraging them to become self-motivated global citizens ready to lead tomorrow’s world.

“When you think globally, you will achieve bigger things.”– Dameli, Kazakhstan

The diversity on the EF International Academy campus promotes global concepts — ranging from literature to economics — to play out in an inclusive classroom setting. For instance, students don't simply read about history. They discuss the world's political systems and history in real-time with fellow classmates from Germany, China, Canada, the United States and more. Students are offered a variety of different viewpoints, and encouraged to ask, research, and analyze the information to form their own opinions about the subject matter.

“I constantly find myself thinking about world issues in a new way," says Eric, an EF International Academy Torbay student from Spain. "It doesn't just happen in the classroom. It happens every single time I talk to my friends and classmates.”

EnrichingStudent Life The EF International Academy campus has an energy like no other. This is a school where students actively seek to learn more about one another — where making friends is easy, and opportunities to get involved with campus life are near endless.

Students play a prominent role in every aspect of the EF International Academy campus, from leading classroom discussions to launching student clubs and competing in athletic events. On any given day, students can be found organizing charity events, performing musical recitals, or debating global issues amongst an international group of teachers and friends.

“ ‘Where are you from?’ is the only introduction

you’ll ever need.”– Josh, United Kingdom

Student Life

“I’m learning through leadership.”– Renan, Brazil

Football had long been a part of Renan’s life growing up in his native Brazil. That’s why it meant so much to him when he was named captain of the competitive football team at EF International Academy New York. Not only does the school’s athletic programme allow him to fulfill his personal passion for football, the position of captain is an opportunity for Renan to gain important leadership, communication, and team-building skills that will stay with him through university and beyond.

“I now see the world in a new way.”– Alice, Rwanda

Alice aims to pursue a career in international relations following university, and there is no better place to prepare her than EF International Academy. When she’s not sharing perspectives on politics with classmates from around the world, she’s developing her own policy statements and speeches in the school’s Debate Club and Model UN groups. Outside the campus, Alice explores the endless number of political lectures, museums, and libraries in the New York City area, further preparing herself for success at an elite university.

“EF gave me a panoramic view of life.”– Yousef, Iran

For Yousef, one of the most meaningful aspects of his experience at EF International Academy has been the chance to participate in community service opportunities through the school’s Creative Action and Service Programme (CAS). From the International Day of Peace to Children in Need, Yousef tries to participate in at least one service project each month to make the most of his time at the school — and on the planet. Students havehad the opportunity to volunteer in Nicaragua to build houses for those in need, travel to Morocco as part of Duke of Edinburgh and also participate in a charity fundraiser in Central Park, New York.

“I found my voice here.”– Gina, Taiwan

Naturally soft-spoken, Gina didn’t have much opportunity to build her social confidence in her traditional high school in Taiwan. All of that changed when she reached the interactive classrooms of EF International Academy. Now in her second year of EF’s International Baccalaureate programme, Gina has benefited from the school’s small class sizes and encouraging atmosphere. She is active in drama club, a cheerleader, and even had a dancing role in the school’s drama production “Grease.”

“We position every student for success.”– Ted McGrath, Head Teacher, EF Oxford

A Cornerstone of Support — EF All the Way Support is at the heart of EF International Academy experience. From the initial admissions process in your home country through graduation and beyond, EF’s global network of admissions counselors, faculty, university placement advisers, and alumni keep students and their families informed connected, and prepare for success.

At Home Local admissions counselors help students identify the right campus and academic programme best suited to their goals. Once admitted, admissions counselors continue to serve as liaisons between the school and family back home so that parents always have a personal contact who can speak to them in their native language regarding their child’s progress and school updates On CampusTeachers are the most powerful source of support on every EF International Academy campus. Speaking 45 languages, with experience living and working in 50 countries, their backgrounds are as diverse as the students they teach. They know firsthand what it’s like to live or study in another country, and take great effort to help students feel comfortable and excel in their learning environment. Personal advisers help manage the demands of a rigorous academic curriculum with the excitement –and challenges – of being away from home. Advisers meet with their students one-on-one every single week to make sure that they are thriving in the high school environment. Mock examinations, constructive feedback, and progress reports are a regular part of academic life.

Residence life Dorm parents offer 24/7 guidance to students living in the EF International Academy dormitories, whether they need help with homework or support in developing the confidence they need to achieve their goals. Dorm parents live on site with the students the entire academic year.

Host parents offer a safe and secure environment to students who choose to live in host family accommodation. All host families are carefully selected and have hosted international students for many years.

University Advising University placement advisers guide students through the university placement process beginning their first month on campus. Advisers conduct weekly meetings with students, as well as ongoing consultation with parents, to identify the best universities for attaining individual goals.

graduation and BeyondAlumni are an equally important part of the EF experience. EF International Academy Alumni Association ensures that students stay connected to the invaluable network of global peers they create during their stay. Alumni also help current students secure internships and further guide them through the university advising process. Alumni currently work around the globe in top international companies like PwC, KPMG, Ernst & Young and CERN.

Students prepare for mock interviews with university

placement adviser Cassandra Dragon.

“My admissions counselor knew which programme was right for me.”– Anastasia, Russia

Before coming to EF International Academy, Anastasia’s local admissions counselor in Russia worked with her and her parents to determine the courses and academic programme best suited to her goal of becoming a doctor. They also determined that Anastasia would best thrive in a host family, which offered a quiet, supportive environment ideal for focusing on one’s studies. The extra support that Anastasia received before starting school made her and her parents feel secure in their decision to attend EF.

“Every decision was made with my welfare in mind,” she says.“I knew I’d find success when I arrived here.”

“I have two families now.”– Steffen, Germany

What Steffen has enjoyed most since arriving at EF International Academy is the wealth of other students who are passionate about their studies and focused on the issues impacting the world. In addition, he says he has found great support in his host family and the rest of the EF community, all of whom are equally committed to his personal success.

“My parents’ support gives me the power to continue,” Steffen says. “But my host family, teachers and friends give me the power to succeed.”

“I can accomplish anything.”– Mimmi, Norway

- Sheel, IndiaMimmi has been involved withalmost every student club onthe EF International Academy campus, from studentcouncil to theater to basketball.Part of the reason she’s feltso comfortable doing so, shesays, is her adviser, art teacherRebecca Millhouse, and the ongoing support from her other counselors and teachers. With Ms. Millhouse’s encouragement, Mimmi has taken advantage of every opportunity that’s come her way. She’s even secured an internship in Manhattan to further explore her passion for entrepreneurship.

“Every time I get a new idea fora project, or something I wantto pursue, Ms Millhouse encourages me to go for it,” Mimmi says. “She believes in me. That support makes all the difference.”

“Faculty are more than teachers here.” – Taylor, Vietnam

Since coming to EF International Academy, Taylor says he has learned just how important one’s teachers are in contributing to the learning experience. He has found his science teachers to be especially inspiring, allowing students to explore scientific concepts hands-on, creating their own accelerometers and spectroscopes and testing key concepts like the speed of sound and the index of refraction. What’s more, teachers are always available to answer questions — both inside and outside the classroom. With plans of pursuing a career in chemical engineering, Taylor believes the personal approach to teaching — and learning — has given him a greater understanding of science and will ultimately lend an invaluable edge in university placement.

“I never realized how important teachers are in determining the learning experience,” Taylor says. “EF International Academy showed me how amazing learning could be.”

The EF International Academy experience is a personal one. With one-on-one guidance and support from teachers and staff at EF International Academy, students choose their own courses, their own academic programme, and ultimately their own pathway to success. At the heart of that is a personal teaching method that also guide students every step of the way.

Together with your local admissions counselor you will complete EF International Academy’s proprietary Personal Learning Profile, which will help us determine not just your learning style, but the academic programme most compatible with your personality, and the career path most suited to your academic strengths. The learning profile is a blueprint that will help you navigate your future, at EF International Academy and beyond. The results of your learning profile are shared with your family, as well as your core group of teachers and advisers, so that all can work as a team to ensure success on your chosen path.

Chris Nicholls / Sociology teacherCAS and TOK Coordinator

Chris Nicholls teaches sociology for the A-level programme at EF Torbay. He also manages the Creativity Action and Service (CAS) and Theory of Knowledge (TOK) components for the school’s International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma. As such, Nicholls has come to understand the strengths of both curricula. Inspired by the IB’s focus on critical thinking, he’s even developed a similar course for his A-level students, encouraging them to develop the same inquisitive, analytical worldview promoted in IB classes.

In line with the inclusive spirit of the EF International Academy Torbay campus, Nicholls has also worked to include all students — IB and A-level — in CAS opportunities. In the past, he’s helped organize everything from a sponsored walk on Dartmoor to raise money for the National Trust to smaller projects like Shelter Box (for disaster relief). He’s also helped launch a music club, where students can share their love of guitar, piano, and drums — and gain a much-needed break from their studies.

Audria / Indonesia

Accustomed to the busy streets of Jakarta, Audria quickly fell in love with the small, coastal village of Torbay, and how easy it’s been to get to know her friends, teachers, and host family.

She also loves how much there is to explore within a short distance from the campus. From visits to the Eden Project bio-dome to trips to nearby Exeter University, Torbay may be short on crowds — but it’s definitely not short on inspiration.

“I never run out of places to explore,” Audria says. “I discover something new every day.”

CurriculumAs part of the A-levels’ two-year course of study, students will select three to five courses selected based on their university and career goals. EF International Academy counselors will help students choose the right combination of A-level courses to ensure the best chance of acceptance to top universities. For instance, prospective medical students would choose A-level subjects such as biology, chemistry, and statistics, while prospective lawyers might study government and politics, philosophy, and law.

A-level courses are modular, meaning they are composed of standard units or sections. Most A-level courses have two units in the first year and two units in the second year. The unit assessments typically take place through exams in January and June and may involve coursework or other practical assessment.

Because they are based in a British tradition of learning, success in A-levels requires a high level of English competence and knowledge of, or comfort with, the British learning culture. Independent study — a cornerstone of the UK education system — is also a large part of the A-level curriculum.

Faculty members assess students regularly to ensure their ultimate success in this environment. In addition to providing personal, world-class instruction, EF International Academy teachers provide monthly tests to gauge students’ readiness for their yearly A-level examinations. In 2011, 34% of EF International Academy students achieved grades AAA or higher, and 45% received A/A* on A-level exams.

A-level Programme

A-level exams are a standard entry requirement for universities in the United Kingdom — some of the top learning institutions in the entire world. EF International Academy’s A-level programme ensures that students achieve the absolute highest A-level results in competitive subjects like math, science, and economics through a hands-on learning environment and class sizes of just 13.

International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme

Students follow six courses, ensuring breadth of knowledge in languages, social studies, the experimental sciences, mathematics and the arts. In addition, the programme has three core requirements that challenge students to apply their knowledge and understanding: the extended essay independent research project, the Theory of Knowledge course, and a Creativity, Action, and Service component.

Students take written examinations at the end of the programme, which are marked by external IB examiners. They also complete assessment tasks throughout the programme.

Unlike many other IB World Schools, EF International Academy is truly international in nature, allowing students to live the ethos of the IB programme every single day. In the IB’s Creativity Action Service (CAS) requirement, students are able to undertake service projects relating to their home countries or those of their EF friends. Students have organized events for Amnesty International, built houses in Nicaragua, and even tutored students in their school community. The hands-on aspect of the programme allows them to gain an even deeper appreciation for the issues and places they are studying.

International Baccalaureate Diploma (IB) is an internationally recognized qualification that prepares students for university study. The prestigious IB Diploma is grounded solidly in the concepts of inquiry, internationalism, and understanding. The IB aims to develop “inquiring, knowledgeable, and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.”

Age 16+grade level: Grades 11-12Programme length: 2 yearslocations offered: New York (USA), Vancouver (CAN), Oxford (UK), Torbay (UK)Best suited for: Student seeking well-rounded worldview; those seeking admissions to universities in the United States or other top locations

Extended EssayRequires students to engage in independent research through an in-depth study of a specific subject. The research culminates in a 4,000 word essay, preparing students for university-level research and writing.

Recent extended essay topics include: • To what extent do Norwegian farm subsidies benefit or harm the Norwegian economy?• Which commercially available water softener can soften hard water most effectively?• To what extent did the Marian Reforms (107 BC) lead to Rome’s rise and downfall?• To what extent did the earthquake in 2011

affect Japan’s export market?• How are mathematical logarithms involved in

the creation of a piano?• How to take a brand from a local market to a

global market

TOK (Theory of Knowledge)Designed to encourage each student to reflect on the nature of knowledge by examining different ways of knowing (perception, emotion, language and reason) and different kinds of knowledge (scientific, artistic, mathematical and historical).

TOK discussion questions include: • How does cultural heritage explain an individual’s truth through perception, reason, emotion and, especially, language?• How do the varying legal systems of different countries affect our views on ethics?• Can we maintain an absolute standard for human rights despite our different cultural boundaries?

CAS (Creativity, Action, Service) Requires that students actively learn fromthe experience of doing creative projects or service activities outside of the classroom.

CAS activities include: • Performing first-aid through St. Johns Ambulance• Building houses for needy families in Nicaragua• Exchanging artwork with orphaned children in Mexico• Creating a windmill to support clean energy on campus• Planning charity music performances

CORE REQUIREmENTS

The International Baccalaureate diploma Programme at EF International Academy is unique in that it allows students to live internationalism, and to experience new global perspectives every single day through the diversity of the EF campus student body.

The IB CurriculumThe International Baccalaureate Diploma curriculum includes six core subject groups and three core requirements.

“To truly be part of society, you must consider your place in it.”

– Eric, Spain

Top universities around the world offer university credit to those students who score high on IB exams. That means that successful IB candidates may complete university studies in less time than their peers who studied an alternate university preparation curricula.

Eric / Spain

Hoping to pursue a career in economics, Eric used his extended essay as a way to further explore one of today’s real economic issues — whether Spain should stay in the Euro Zone. Throughout the research process, he reached out to real economists in the field, creating a personal network of professionals and mentors, and gaining an edge for the university application process. “To truly be part of society, you must consider your place in it,” he says. “I love that I can do that through EF International Academy’s IB Programme.”

Student Profile The international equivalent of the GCSE, the IGCSE programme has long been a primary method of qualification in the United Kingdom and now offers international students a renowned pathway to A-Levels, International Baccalaureate Diploma, and North American High School Diploma.

Students who enrol in grades 9-10 in the EF International Academy New York or Vancouver campuses follow IGCSE curriculum and form an even stronger foundation in the American and British education systems, better preparing them for success in the International Baccalaureate or A-level curriculum.

IGCSE gives teachers two additional years to understand students’ strengths and learning styles, and to help them prepare for university admissions.

The Curriculum Students following the IGCSE curriculum study a core group of subjects (English, math and science), as well as an elective group of studies (foreign language, humanities, information technology, and more). Just as rigorous as the GCSE in the UK, the IGCSE was specifically developed for international students; cultural awareness and English language skills are also important elements of the curriculum. Students can choose from a wide variety of subjects based on personal interest or career goals.

The IGCSE bases qualifications on individual subjects, meaning that one will receive an IGCSE qualification for each subject he or she successfully completes.

IGCSE students are externally assessed based on oral and written exams at the end of the programme. EF International Academy students have consistently scored among the highest in the world.

Developed by the University of Cambridge, the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) is the world’s most popular, globally-recognized qualification for students 14-16. EF International Academy offers the IGCSE curriculum for Grades 9-10 at its New York and Vancouver locations, and for Secondary Education at its Torbay campus.

Eric / Taiwan

Eric was on track to attend one of the top universities in Taiwan, but he felt that gain-ing a strong foundation in the Western education system would better prepare him for a career in medicine or engi-neering. He began his studies at EF New York in Grade 9 (IGCSE) two years ago and has since found tremendous success in the school’s IB programme. The extra class-room time at EF — as well as the school’s small class sizes and personal attention — increased his confidence on many levels. He has enjoyed participating in activities like Model UN, basketball, the student literary magazine and student council. Eric hopes to attend MIT to study Chemical Engineering. Frequently Asked QuestionsChoosing a school and academic programme is a significant decision, especially for motivated students who plan to attend top universities. Here, we answer some of the questions students and parents commonly ask about EF International Academy.

what are the major differences between A-levels and the International Baccalaureate diploma Programme? Both are rigorous two-year academic programmes that are respected around the world. A-levels encourage students to choose and specialise in a few academic subjects, typically three to four, whereas the IB programme is broader in scope. All IB students must master literature, mathematics, science, humanities, arts and second languages. A-levels are popular in Great Britain, and students choose A-level subjects based on their university and career goals. Prospective medical students might study mathematics, biology, chemistry and statistics, whereas prospective law students might study political science, history, government and philosophy. An EF International Academy admissions officer can help you decide which programme is best for you.

In what ways does EF International Academy help students apply to university? One of our primary goals is helping students get into the right university. Advisors work individually with each student to develop a thorough application strategy. They confer on a regular basis to ensure students meet various filing deadlines and are navigating the application process effectively. We sponsor university fairs and coach students about interviews, application profiles and aptitude tests. Most important, we ensure students progress academically and achieve the best results possible on examinations. At the end of the process, we offer advice to students and parents about which offer to accept.

I want to study medicine. How do I ensure I will be accepted to medical school?Medical school is highly competitive, and our university advisors work with prospective medical students to ensure they’re well positioned for entry into a good programme. We organise informational sessions for prospective medical students, arrange work experience at hospitals and tutor students to ensure they’re prepared for the BMAT, UKCAT, GAMSAT, MCAT and other aptitude tests. We also offer coaching that includes mock admissions interviews, and we advise students about choosing coursework. A number of our students take advantage of open days at hospitals and medical schools, and many pursue relevant work experience during school holidays and related activities that we encourage and help arrange.

How do I find out if I meet the minimum requirements to study at EF International Academy?Contact one of EF International Academy’s admissions offices listed at the back of this brochure. EF International Academy admissions officers offer guidance and provide assessment tests, English-language tests and application forms.

what type of insurance do I need to attend EF International Academy?Students must have complete medical and accident insurance. We recommend an insurance package offered through Erika Travel Insurance, which has been tailor-made for EF International Academy students. It provides medical and accident coverage and coverage for personal belongings, programme interruption and liability. It’s valid around the world, allowing students to travel during the programme.

what is the student to teacher ratio at the schools? We believe that forming close relationships with students and giving them individual attention is the best way to teach. On average we maintain a student-to-teacher ratio of about 11-to-1. In addition, each student works closely with a personal advisor who monitors the student’s overall welfare and academic progress. Students also develop close relationships with dorm parents and residential staff.

what accommodation options are available to students? In all four campuses, students can either choice to live in comfortable dormitories on campus or live with host families off-campus.

Are there scholarships available?Yes. Every year we award a limited number of scholarships. Please contact our admissions office to learn more, or visit our website, www.ef.com/academy.

How safe is it to live on campus, and what supervision does EF offer? The safety of students is our primary concern. Our campuses are private, secure and monitored by staff 24 hours a day. In addition, campuses are located in quiet residential areas. In New York, we have 25 acres of private grounds – formerly a university campus – in the small community of Tarrytown. In Oxford, our campus is located in a neighborhood popular with university professors. In Torbay, students are surrounded by a quiet community. If a student needs help or advice from an adult, he or she is able to do so at any time, 24 hours a day.

what are the main advantages of attending EF International Academy?

What distinguishes EF International Academy is that it specialises in working with international students. Our students, who come from over 60 countries, are driven and motivated, and our experienced teachers know how to guide our students to their greatest potential. In addition, EF International Academy graduates go on to top universities around the world; 9 out of 10 attend their first choice university.

“Our students have the courage to invest in their futures —

to invest in themselves.”– David Davies, Headmaster, EF Torbay

Sheel / India

Gifted in both science and mathematics, Sheel always had a passion for business, but he wasn’t sure his home school in India could guarantee him success in the business world. Now in his second year in EF’s IB program, Sheel feels confident that his classes and teachers are giving him the foundation he needs to truly understand how the global market — and the world — works.

“We’re not just preparing ourselves to be successful in high school,” he says. “We’re preparing ourselves for successful lives.” Sheel’s mom, Mrs. Patel says that she observed that his son became more independent, confident, and more mature in the one year that he spent at EF and she is extremely pleased with her son’s progress.
