World-Class University Placements

EF International Academy has a 100% success rate in placing students at excellent universities, and nine out of ten of our students are accepted to their first choice university. Guiding students through the university application process is a crucial part of our mission.

Our students earn places at top universities worldwide

EF International Academy students have an excellent record of matriculating at the world’s most prestigious universities. 90% of our students were awarded placements at their first choice university, and we ensure that every graduated student is enrolled in university to pursue their future academic degree. In the UK, our students have been admitted to each of the nation’s top 30 schools, and 50% of our students are placed in the UK’s top 10 schools, including Oxford, Cambridge and LSE. In the US and elsewhere in the world, our students have gone on to study at top institutions, including Harvard, University of Pennsylvania and Zurich University.

Personal Placement Counselling

EF International Academy’s team of university admissions advisors is dedicated to guiding students through the entire university application process. Deciding which university to attend is one of the biggest decisions in a student’s life. Our aim is to make the process smooth,

understandable and successful. We work individually with each student to develop an application strategy, providing guidance about exams, requirements, deadlines, essays, interviews and financial assistance. Getting into the right university involves hard work, a strong academic record and good test scores. Our university admissions advisors are there to help each student every step of the way.

Consistent success with IELTS, Cambridge, TOEFL and SAT exams

A high level of English proficiency is required for admission to the world’s best universities. A strong command of the English language is also necessary for achieving top A-level results and successfully completing the IB Diploma Programme. Our students consistently earn high scores on internationally recognised English exams, such as IELTS, TOEFL and a variety of Cambridge exams. In addition, we make sure our students are well prepared to succeed on university admissions exams, such as the SAT and SAT Subject Tests in the USA.

A lifetime of success

As well as guiding our students through the university admissions process and preparing them to succeed in higher education, we believe their long-term wellbeing, at university and beyond, is important. Each year we receive updates from alumni who credit EF International Academy with influencing and shaping their lives. We enjoy following the progress of our graduates and are pleased when the education they received with us helps them to succeed in whatever field or career they choose.

Pastoral Care – Prioritising Your WelfareThe welfare and progress of our students is our primary concern. EF International Academy works individually with each student to ensure they gain a healthy and fulfilling experience.

Your personal tutor guides you

Each student is assigned a personal tutor whose role is to monitor students’ academic progress, university applications, and general welfare. Personal tutors meet with students twice a day and then have longer sessions with students to discuss test results, progress in class, and homework. They provide you with expert guidance on how to reach your full potential and achieve high grades.

Parental involvement

Parents are encouraged to maintain regular contact with their son or daughter’s personal tutor. We organise an “Open Day” to welcome parents and guardians to the campus in the spring. The headmaster or headmistress will meet personally with parents to discuss any issues and arrange meetings with personal tutors or subject teachers when appropriate. We contact parents promptly if there is anything we feel we should discuss about their son or daughter’s welfare, conduct, progress, or achievement. Parents and guardians who are visiting a student’s host country are always welcome to visit our schools.

Regular progress reports

In the course of the academic year, parents can expect to see regular grade reports. Students will complete practice examination papers and will receive constructive feedback intended to improve their academic performance. Written reports from subject tutors, feedback from personal tutors, and year-end academic reports will be sent to all parents. Parents may also follow students’ progress by using the EF online portal. Parents can go online at home to check students’ grades, follow school news and read up-to-date notes from teachers.

Thorough preparation from your own university placement advisor

EF International Academy has a wide network of partner universities who value the expert education our students receive. Each student is assigned a university placement advisor upon arrival. From the start of your programme you will receive regular briefings from your advisor so that you know exactly what is required of you in order to apply to university. Your university placement advisor provides detailed support through the entire process, from deciding where to apply to helping choose which offer to accept.

Career advice

Our career services directors work individually with each student to plan a career strategy. Students will receive full counselling and support to help them discuss with their parents which EF International Academy courses to select. As part of the programme of career advice, we use detailed questionnaires and individual mentoring to ensure the right career pathway is selected. As part of the tutorial programme, we will focus on the needs and aspirations of each individual while encouraging their highest aims and expectations.

Additional support from your educational counsellor at home

For many students, this will be the first time of living abroad. We understand the anxieties and concerns that parents and students may have when embarking on this important educational step. We provide additional support through your EF educational counsellor, with whom you meet before departure and who is available to speak to you or your parents (in your native language) at any point during your time abroad. Our staff at EF International Academy work closely with your educational counsellor to make sure that your needs are met.

A personal tutor works with each student to set study goals, monitor progress, and provide individual support.

Access the best universities around the world with the help of your own university placement advisor.

Regular assessments and careful tracking reports show each student’s progress.

Your Home Away From HomeStudying abroad is a challenging and rewarding experience. With dedicated staff and safe, comfortable, modern campuses, EF International Academy fosters a nurturing environment where students can thrive and grow.

Comfortable and Secure Campus

Recognising that an important aspect of your education happens outside the classroom, we have carefully cultivated a close-knit community and invested in the most secure and modern campus facilities so that you can take advantage of your new home away from home.

Choose to live in a homestay

Our schools offer the option of living with a carefully selected family, most of whom have hosted students for many years. Students appreciate the welcoming and secure environment that living in a family home provides. Standard homestay accommodation is a shared room with another EF International Academy student, usually someone from a different nation, so you can practise your English outside of class. Breakfast and dinner are included on weekdays, as are all meals at weekends. Single rooms can be arranged for a small supplement.

Or, live in one of EF’s residences

You also have the option of living alongside people from all over the world in our student residences. Residences are on or near campus and allow you to practise your language skills with classmates every day. There is an on-site residence director, and teachers act as house parents to ensure your comfort and safety. Residences feature common rooms where students can socialise and relax.

House parents

Teachers serve as house parents and live in each residence to supervise students and offer around-the-clock care. House parents help provide a safe and supportive environment that encourages students to develop into responsible and independent adults.

24-hour security

No matter which accommodation option you chose – homestay or boarding at an EF residence – be assured that we provide around-the-clock security. We carefully screen and interview each host family, and residence directors live on-site and are available 24 hours a day.

Modern campus facilities

Each EF International Academy campus boasts the latest technology and amenities, including wireless internet access, innovative language and science laboratories, comfortable student lounges, and convenient dining options. Set on beautifully landscaped grounds, every EF International Academy campus provides a tranquil environment where students can focus on learning.

Additional privileges and resources

Each of our campuses has unique attributes. Depending on where you study, you will have access to a wide range of library and sports facilities, either on campus or located conveniently nearby.

A Vibrant Student Life

Among the most enduring aspects of your high school experience are the lifelong friendships you will make. Be part of an international community where English enables you to communicate, learn and make friends with people from dozens of different countries.

Campus activities office

Each week your school’s on-site EF activities coordinator arranges a full programme of sports, activities, and excursions. Participating in organised events is the best way to make new friends and get involved in campus life.

Open days at universities

During your course we will arrange for you to attend open days at nearby universities. This allows you to visit prospective universities, investigate degree courses and meet university admissions officers. You will also gain insight into what university life is like before you actually decide where to apply.

EF International Academy university fairs

Take advantage of EF International Academy fairs where you can meet admissions officers and speakers from various universities who give talks at our campuses. You will have the opportunity to ask questions, learn more about academic faculties and individual universities, and have an initial interview.

After-school student clubs

We offer a wide range of extracurricular activities at each school. Popular clubs and activities at EF International Academy include debate, student council, the school newspaper, cooking club, fashion design, photography, choir, movie club, chess club and Model United Nations. We support student initiatives to organise new and exciting extracurricular opportunities.

Sports teams and tournaments

Play in an international football tournament or join campus sports teams, which are available for just about every sport. Each campus is located near exceptional athletic facilities so that you can swim, play tennis, or work out at the gym. Our New York campus has substantial sports facilities, playing fields, tennis and basketball courts, and an indoor competition swimming pool on site.

Fun excursions and trips

Take advantage of your time abroad to discover a new country and culture. Your EF activities coordinator plans a number of excursions and trips throughout your stay. You will have the chance to visit museums and historical sights or enjoy local attractions. At the weekend, explore your host country and try a new adventure sport like mountain biking or rock climbing. The highlight of your stay may even be a weekend trip to Paris, Boston, London or Seattle, depending on which school you choose.

EF International Academy Alumni Association

Stay in touch! Throughout the year our local offices organise reunion parties, visits to schools and informal meetings for former EF International Academy students. It is a great way to stay in contact with those who have shared similar experiences, swap stories and meet new like-minded people.

Campus facilities include gyms, student lounges and, in New York, a competition swimming pool.

Students can explore their interests and develop their talents in arts, music and drama.

A full programme of extracurricular activities, sports and clubs are arranged on each campus.

The IB Diploma Programme has broad-ranging academic content. Students must study literature, either in their own language or in English, humanities, mathematics, science, and the arts. All students write a 4000-word Extended Essay based on a topic of personal interest. They also follow the Theory of Knowledge (TOK) course, which teaches them how to approach their studies with a critical eye.

Serving a higher purpose

Students also participate in a programme called Creativity, Action, Service (CAS), which encourages them to participate in community service and engage in creative projects outside the classroom. Among other things, EF International Academy students have traveled to Nicaragua to help build a school, and students regularly conduct service projects in their local communities. By working outside the classroom, students gain valuable real-world experience and develop a broader perspective about the world.

How is the diploma assessed?

At the end of the two-year programme, students are assessed internally and externally to measure individual performance against stated objectives for each subject. The grading system for the IB Diploma is based on a points score. The maximum score available is 45 points, with a pass mark from 24 points.

A-Level Programme

Your passport to the best universities in the UK. Universities in the UK are recognised around the world for their excellence, and top-ranked UK universities require secondary students to sit for A-level examinations.

What are A-levels?

Students study for advanced level examinations, know as A-levels, for two years, usually between the ages of 16 to 19. Preparation for A-levels is often done at a specialised school, such as EF International Academy, known as a sixth form college. The first year of sixth form college is known as the lower sixth while the second year is called the upper sixth. The students take national exams at the end of the first year and again at the end of the second year. Performing well on these A-level examinations is critical because universities use A-level grades to decide which students to admit.

Why study A-levels?

Universities in the UK are regarded as some of the best in the world, and a standard way to get accepted to a UK university is to take A-level examinations. Students sit for A-level examinations in order to progress to the top-ranked universities in the UK. High A-level grades are also essential for competitive undergraduate studies such as medicine, law and engineering. Moreover, A-levels are widely recognised by universities around the world as a high achievement, so doing well on A-levels opens doors to limitless possibilities.

A-levels at EF International Academy

Performing well on A-levels requires a high level of English competence and knowledge of the British learning culture. A significant amount of independent study is required. Many international students have less experience with this British method of learning. EF International Academy’s teachers specialise in helping students perform well on A-levels. To assure students stay on track, they are regularly tested. Our tutors monitor students’ monthly test results, performance, homework and approach to studying.

Choosing A-levels

Students choose A-level subjects based on their academic skills and their future course of study at university. Typically, students take four academic subjects during their first year. Most take three subjects during their second year, though some students take more. For instance, a student might study biology, psychology, economics and sociology during the first year of A-levels and psychology, economics and sociology during the second year. Prospective medical students would choose A-level subjects such as biology, chemistry and statistics, whereas prospective lawyers might study

government and politics, philosophy and law. Choosing an appropriate combination of A-levels gives students the best chance of being admitted to top universities.

A-level grades

Typically, a student wishing to attend university prepares for A-level examinations in three or four different subjects. They are advised to choose subjects that will help their future career and university applications. Examinations are independently graded ranging from A (the highest) to E.

Examples of A-level subjects at EF International Academy

• Accountancy • Biology • Business studies • Chemistry • Computer studies • Economics• Further mathematics • Geography • Physics • Law• Information technology • Mathematics• Media studies • Philosophy • Psychology • Sociology• Statistics • Film studies

A-Level preparation courses in modern languages such as German, French, Spanish, Chinese, Italian, Russian and Arabic can also be offered at our schools.

International GCSE Programme in Great BritainThe International GCSE is the world’s most popular international curriculum for students aged 14 to 16. It leads to a qualification that is recognised around the globe, and it prepares students for A-levels and the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme.

What is the International GCSE?

The International GCSE Programme (IGCSE) is offered at EF International Academy in Torbay. GCSE stands for General Certificate of Secondary Education. The IGCSE is a two-year programme for students between the ages of 14 and 16, and it is taught in over 125 countries. It is the international equivalent to the UK’s GCSE. It teaches students to be inquisitive and apply their knowledge to new situations. Cultural awareness and English language skills are important parts of the IGCSE curriculum.

Why take the International GCSE?

The IGCSE is recognised around the world as a significant academic attainment. The main benefit of the IGCSE is that it prepares students for A-levels and the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. The curriculum is designed to encourage creative thinking, intellectual enquiry and problem solving – skills that increase students’ ability to succeed at the next level of their education.

How is the International GCSE different from the UK GCSE?

The IGCSE meets the same high academic standards as the GCSE, and it is recognised around the world as equivalent. The main difference is that IGCSEs are specifically designed for international students. They are also more flexible. The curriculum gives schools and teachers the ability to address students’ requirements by offering different subjects – there are 70 to choose from – and focusing attention where it’s needed. Many consider IGCSEs in certain subjects, such as mathematics and science, to be more rigorous.

Choosing IGCSE subjects

EF International Academy works individually with students to help them select subjects that match their interests, skills and university objectives. English, mathematics and science are core subjects, but students also study foreign languages, humanities, information technology and other subjects. Extracurricular activities, such as academic clubs, sports and trips to historical sites help students develop into well-rounded adults.

Grades and assessmentsStudents take written and oralexaminations at the end of theprogramme, and the exams are externallygraded. In addition, part of a student’sgrade may derive from courseworkconducted in school. Students receivegrades from A*, the highest, to G. EFInternational Academy works with eachstudent to ensure they do the best theycan on examinations and assessments.

What happens after the IGCSE?

After taking IGCSEs, most students go on to pursue A-levels or the International Baccalaureate Diploma. Students who have mastered IGCSEs bring valuable skills to this next stage of their education. They are highly knowledgeable about a number of academic subjects, and they have learned to be motivated and independent learners who can perform well on examinations. These skills are valuable at university, and they prepare students to excel in the global community

Frequently Asked Questions

Choosing a school and academic programme is a significant decision, especially for motivated students who plan to attend top universities. Here, we answer some of the questions students and parents commonly ask about EF International Academy.

What are the main advantages of attending EF International Academy?

What distinguishes EF International Academy is that it specialises in working with international students. Our students, who come from over 40 countries, are driven and motivated, and our experienced teachers know how to guide our students to their greatest potential. It’s an experience that sets them apart. In addition, EF International Academy graduates go on to top universities around the world; nine out of ten attend their first choice university.

What are the major differences between A-levels and the International Baccalaureate?

Both are rigorous two-year academic programmes that are respected around the world. A-levels encourage students to choose and specialise in a few academic subjects, typically three to four, whereas the IB programme is broader in scope. All IB students must master literature, mathematics, science, humanities, arts and second languages. A-levels are popular in Great Britain, and students choose A-level subjects based

on their university and career goals. Prospective medical students might study mathematics, biology, chemistry and statistics, whereas prospective law students might study political science, history, government and philosophy. An EF International Academy admissions officer can help you decide which programme is best for you.

In what ways does EF International Academy help students apply to university?

One of our primary goals is helping students get into the right university. Advisors work individually with each student to develop a thorough application strategy. They confer on a regular basis to ensure students meet various filing deadlines and are navigating the application process effectively. We sponsor university fairs and coach students about interviews, application profiles and aptitude tests. Most important, we ensure students progress academically and achieve the best results possible on examinations. At the end of the process, we offer advice to students and parents about which offer to accept.

I want to study medicine, how do I ensure I will be accepted to medical school?

Medical school is highly competitive, and our university advisors work with prospective medical students to ensure they’re well positioned for entry into a good programme. We organise informational sessions for prospective medical students, arrange work experience at hospitals and tutor students to ensure they’re prepared for the BMAT, UKCAT, GAMSAT, MCAT and other aptitude tests. We also offer coaching

Page 49: EF International Academy Indonesia

that includes mock admissions interviews, and we advise students about choosing coursework. A number of our students take advantage of open days at hospitals and medical schools, and many pursue relevant work experience during school holidays, activities we encourage and help arrange.

How do I find out if I meet the minimum requirements to study at EF International Academy?

Contact one of EF International Academy’s admissions offices listed at the back of this brochure. EF International Academy admissions managers will offer guidance and provide assessment tests, English-language tests and application forms.

What type of insurance do I need to attend EF International Academy?

Students must have complete medical and accident insurance. We recommend an insurance package offered through Erika Travel Insurance, which has been tailor-made for EF International Academy students. It provides medical and accident coverage and coverage for personal belongings, programme interruption and liability. It’s valid around the world, allowing students to travel during the programme.

What is the student to teacher ratio at the schools?

We believe that forming close relationships with students and giving them individual attention is the best way to teach. On average we maintain a student to teacher ratio of about 15 to 1. In addition, each student works closely with a personal advisor who monitors the student’s overall welfare and academic progress. Students also develop close relationships with dorm parents and residential staff.

What accommodation options are available to students?

On our New York campus, students live in comfortable dormitories on campus. In Torbay, students live with host families, where they can practise English and enjoy a warm, family environment. In Oxford, students have the choice between living with a host family or in a dormitory.

Are there scholarships available?

Yes. Every year we award a limited number of scholarships. Please contact our admissions office to learn more, or visit our website, www.ef.com/academy.

How safe is it to live on campus, and what supervision does EF offer?

The safety of students is our primary concern. Our campuses are private, secure and monitored by staff 24 hours a day. In addition, campuses are located in quiet residential areas. In New York, we have 25 acres of private grounds – formerly a university campus – in the small community of Tarrytown. In Oxford, our campus is located in a neighborhood popular with university professors. In Torbay, students are surrounded by a quiet community. If a student needs help or advice from an adult, he or she is able to do so at any time, 24 hours a day.

Who is an EF International Academy student? Our students come from countries on different continents, from cities and rural areas, and from almost every background imaginable. It’s nearly impossible to describe our students in a few words. However, a typical EF International Academy student does possess certain character traits. Our students are …

… Intellectually curious: They are naturally interested in the world around them and are internally motivated to learn more.

… Hardworking: In addition to managing busy classroom schedules and homework assignments, our students dedicate significant time to independent study and research.

… Multilingual: Many students speak two or more languages when they come to EF International Academy; all students do so when they leave.

… Open-minded: Living and studying with classmates from around the world takes an open mind and a willingness to listen and change as a person.

… Creative: They love music, theatre and literature, but their creativity isn’t limited to the arts, it’s also found in math class, science lab and on the sports field.

… Ready to laugh: A good sense of humor helps students cope with life’s occasional setbacks, not to mention challenging workloads.

… Eager to have fun: Students enjoy rock climbing, soccer, bicycling along the river and taking school excursions to Boston, London and elsewhere.

… Responsible: Living in a dorm leads to independence and maturity, but our students know that independence comes with responsibilities.

… Motivated: Students from around the globe attend our schools; they are motivated to succeed, and they are motivated to make the world a better place.

… Enthusiastic: In the classroom, on the sports field, and during passionate late-night debates, our students bring enthusiasm to every endeavor.
