Paradise Helicopters Adds Tours Over Ko OlinaB Y N I C O L E K A T O
Paradise Helicopters has expanded its flight operations to
Ko Olina, and now is home to Oahu’s only full-circle tour. The move to West Oahu was possible thanks to the acquisition of Kalaeloa-based Pacific Warbirds.
“When it was offered up for sale, our team jumped at the chance to have the opportunity to offer Warbird rides,” said CEO Calvin Dorn of the World War II aircrafts. “This, of course, increased our efforts to start helicopter operations from the airport, as well.”
The expansion, adds Dorn, was a necessity.
“It was apparent that there would be a slow
rebuilding of aviation at Kalaeloa Airport, especial-ly in light of the ongoing development in Ko Olina and the Kapolei area,” he said. “We are looking for-ward to serving the growing Ko Olina and West Oahu areas with these new tours, giving guests a unique way to see Oahu’s beautiful historic and natural land-marks.”
The Kalaeloa area piqued Dorn’s interest more than a decade ago, and although forgotten at the time, the state recently has begun making improvements to the airport (aka John Rodgers Field) — formerly known as Naval Air Station Barbers Point.

After more than two decades in Mililani, Showers
of Blessing Christian Bookstore will close its doors at the end of the month. No word yet on whether it will move to a new location, but owner Sam Curtis isn’t ruling it out.
“We are open to what-ever God has for us,” he said. “However, we have looked at other locations, and we have not found the perfect fit.”
In the meantime, Curtis is hoping to sell everything in his store by Dec. 31. All items have been marked down 30 percent.
Curtis first opened Showers of Blessing Christian Bookstore in
1989. With help from wife Donna, it has evolved into something far greater than a business. It’s not uncom-mon, says Curtis, for some-one in need of support and guidance to stop in, and in that sense, it has become a ministry for the couple.
“Please keep us in prayer, as we are deter-mining God’s next move for us,” he said. “We still want to be involved in ministry.”
Showers of Blessing Christian Bookstore is located at Mililani Shopping Center, 95-221 Kipapa Drive. It is open from 9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday-Saturday and 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Wednesdays.

Mural By Le Jardin Artists Now Adorns Surf Shop BY TERRI HEFNER
Kimo’s Surf Hut stands as a long-time landmark
at the entrance to Kailua Town, but the surf shop was vandalized Nov. 3, resulting in a shattered pane of glass on the storefront, right where its sign hangs.
HPD responded, but the repairs are up to the business.
That large window space was a hole that needed to be covered, so owner James “Kimo” Moore reached out to his chil-dren’s school.
And, thanks to six volunteers — Le Jardin Academy art teachers Amy Manso and Andrea Tam, and their students Mia Barrett, Natalie Piper, Jamie Tom and Mahie Wilhelm — now there is
a colorful mural in the window’s place.
“Kimo’s Surf Hut extends a heartfelt maha-lo to the Honolulu Police Department and the tal-ented artists of Le Jardin Academy International Bacclaureate High School for helping our community,” stated Moore, who has one child who graduated from the school, and another who is a senior.
“It’s nice when we can share good news!” he added.
Kimo’s Surf Hut, locat-ed at 776 Kailua Road, sells new, used and vin-tage surfboards, as well as standup paddleboards and accessories, and also does repairs. Call 262-1644.

Pilates O Ka La Doubles Headquarters In KaimukiBY CHR IST INA O ’CONNOR
Kaimuki’s Pilates OKa La now is twice the studio it used to
be, with a recent expansion that included opening a second location. The new venue, located right next door to the original at 3144A Monsarrat Ave., allows space for addition-al Pilates equipment and group classes.
“All in all, I just want to be a fitness option in the neigh-borhood,” explains Pilates O Ka La owner Chelsea Peck.
“Group classes are fun to teach, and they’re really fun to just kind of build some community,” she says. “You don’t always get that from the one-on-one sessions.
“Another reason is the cost,” she adds. “It’s expensive here in Hawaii and not everyone
can afford private Pilates ses-sions, and I want to make it more available to people.”
Pilates O Ka La offers classes for all levels to ensure that people are getting the workout that best matches their experience. The group classes, which now include mat options, can host up to six people. The studio’s new equipment includes a Pilates reformer and chair.
The new space also has allowed Peck to make anoth-er one of her goals come true: offering teacher training. Her teacher training classes — which recently graduated its first cohort — offer full certification in all equipment, specialties and levels.
When asked what she likes about Pilates, Peck laughs

An aquarium full of yellow tangs seems, well, pretty normal.
But an aquarium full of yellow tangs that have been bred and raised in captivity — that’s something special.
Hawai i Pac i f i c University’s Oceanic Institute, based in Waimanalo, made a break-through last month on a nearly 15-year-old research project, raising 100-150 yellow tangs from eggs to juveniles. This is the first time any facility has ever succeeded in culturing the species to maturity, accord-ing to the college.
“Yellow tang are the No. 1 collected aquarium fish in Hawaii,” explained Chatham Callan, director of the finfish program at OI. “Of all the fish taken from
the reefs in Hawaii for the aquarium trade, yellow tangs make up about 80 percent or more of the catch.”
The algae-eating herbi-vore also is important for healthy reef ecosystems — and so OI began looking into aquaculture techniques back in 2001.
Callan said the journey since hasn’t been easy. “Initially, we just had prob-lems even getting the adult fish to give us eggs,” he noted. “Then it was many, many years of struggling with what to feed these tiny, tiny larvae.”
His team of research-ers patiently experimented with food (like figuring out the right kinds of plankton and then cultivating that in large quantities), and then
