The move to West Oahu was possible thanks to the acquisition of Kalaeloa- based Pacific Warbirds. “When it was offered up for sale, our team jumped at the chance to have the opportunity to offer Warbird rides,” said CEO Calvin Dorn of the World War II aircrafts. “This, of course, increased our efforts to start helicopter operations from the airport, as well.” The expansion, adds Dorn, was a necessity. “It was apparent that there would be a slow rebuilding of aviation at Kalaeloa Airport, especial- ly in light of the ongoing development in Ko Olina and the Kapolei area,” he said. “We are looking for- ward to serving the growing Ko Olina and West Oahu areas with these new tours, giving guests a unique way to see Oahu’s beautiful historic and natural land- marks.” The Kalaeloa area piqued Dorn’s interest more than a decade ago, and although forgotten at the time, the state recently has begun making improvements to the airport (aka John Rodgers Field) — formerly known as Naval Air Station Barbers Point. An aquarium full of yellow tangs seems, well, pretty normal.

But an aquarium full of yellow tangs that have been bred and raised in captivity — that’s something special.

Hawai i Pac i f i c University’s Oceanic Institute, based in Waimanalo, made a break-through last month on a nearly 15-year-old research project, raising 100-150 yellow tangs from eggs to juveniles. This is the first time any facility has ever succeeded in culturing the species to maturity, accord-ing to the college.

“Yellow tang are the No. 1 collected aquarium fish in Hawaii,” explained Chatham Callan, director of the finfish program at OI. “Of all the fish taken from

the reefs in Hawaii for the aquarium trade, yellow tangs make up about 80 percent or more of the catch.”

The algae-eating herbi-vore also is important for healthy reef ecosystems — and so OI began looking into aquaculture techniques back in 2001.

Callan said the journey since hasn’t been easy. “Initially, we just had prob-lems even getting the adult fish to give us eggs,” he noted. “Then it was many, many years of struggling with what to feed these tiny, tiny larvae.”

His team of research-ers patiently experimented with food (like figuring out the right kinds of plankton and then cultivating that in large quantities), and then
