2Part 1- Definition & types of learning

What is the difference between learning and training?

* Training is the directed acquisition of knowledge, skills, and competencies as a result of the teaching of vocational or practical skills and knowledge that relate to specific useful competencies.

* Learning is more focused on the learner, it is rather a dynamic synthesizing process, formal or informal, more than a static collection of facts, knowledge or expertise.

Learning is acquiring and synthesizing new, or modifying existing, knowledge, behaviors, skills, values, or preferences

There are 3 different learning styles:

1- Visual learners, learn through seeing: need to see the teacher's body language, thinks in pictures and learn best from visual displays including: diagrams, text books, videos, often take detailed notes during their learning process.

2- Auditory learners: learn through listening

3- Tactile/Kinesthetic Learners: learn through, moving, doing and touching.

Part 1- Definition & types of learning

Learning styles are simply different approachesor ways of learning.

3- Tactile/Kinesthetic Learners: learn through , moving, doing and touching. Learn best through hands-on activities and physical exploring. Will find it hard to sit still for long lecture periods

* Observational learning like mentoring* E-learning and augmented learning: Web-based-training, video, simulations* Play / Gaming, applying the gaming principles to learn* Enculturation* Episodic learning* Informal learning* Formal learning, in classroom, with teacher or instructor* Peer-learning or social learning* Experiential learning* Multimedia or blended learning (mixing multiple media types)

8Part 1- Definition & types of learning

Typical learning curve model:1- slow start learning the basic, 2- ramping up quickly, 3- reaching a performance plateau with slowlier progress. A model first documented by TP Wright in 1936 to estimate aircraft production labor during WWII

* Outcome: What do you want the student to be able to do?* Prerequisite: What does the student need to know in order to do this well?* Pedagogy: What activity will facilitate the learning?* Assessment: How will the student demonstrate the * learning?* Criteria: How will I know the student has done this well?

10Part 2- Instructional design

Use the ADDIE Model to develop the right course from the task & training need analysis, curriculum & course design, content

development, implement (delivery) and evaluation

12Part 3- Measuring learning effectiveness

Bloom's 6-level taxonomy model

* Level 6: I can evaluate a situation and combine what I learnt to solve a new problemS* Level 5: I can recombine the elements into soMething new, solve new problems* Level 4: I can break down what I learnt into compNments & understand the underlying logic* Level 3: I am able to apply what I learnt

* Level 2: I understand

* Level 1: I know, I am unaware
