General informationSeries NRX fixed circuit breakers are available in rear connect (Figure 1) and front connect configurations (Figure 2) . The arc hood on a Series NRX fixed circuit breaker is positioned over the breaker’s arc chambers to primarily direct arc gas discharge (Figure 1 and Figure 2) . An arc hood is used on all fixed circuit breakers whether they are configured for rear or front connection . The front connect configuration also contains a shroud mounted on the load side of the breaker (Figure 2) .

Both breaker configurations can be surface mounted (Figure 1) or fixed mounted (Figure 2) . Mounting feet can be used to fix mount breakers to a vertical surface (Figure 2) . Refer to IL01301020E for mounting instructions .

Rear connect kit installation

This breaker configuration uses universal bus adapters that bolt to the rear primary terminal pads (Figure 3) . This type of adapter only supports bus connections .

For a horizontal bus connection, bolt a universal bus adapter to the vertically positioned mounting holes of a rear primary terminal pad using the hardware provided (Figure 4) . For a vertical bus connection, bolt a universal bus adapter to the horizontally positioned mounting holes using the hardware provided .

Complete the other adapter connections in a similar fashion . The line and load adapters can be mounted in opposite orientations at the line and load sides (Figure 5) . Torque the bolted connections to 10 ft-lb (13 .6 N∙m) .

To remove the adapters, reverse the procedure described above .

Rear connect long adapter extension kit installation

This breaker configuration uses long copper adapter extensions that bolt to the rear primary terminal pads . The long adapter extension comes with vertical holes for making the required connections (Figure 6) .

Use the hardware provided in the kits and torque bolted connections to 10 ft-lb (13 .6 N∙m) .

This breaker configuration uses short copper adapter extensions that bolt to the rear primary terminal pads . The short adapter extension comes with horizontal holes for making the required connections (Figure 7) .

This breaker configuration has bus adapters that are internal to the breaker and are intended to accommodate cable terminals and other external bus connections . These cannot be replaced in the field .

The arc hood on the line side and the shroud on the load side serve to insulate the bus adapters from their surroundings (Figure 8) . Refer to Table 2 for a list of available front connectors .

There are several connection configurations that can be used on the Series NRX front connect . The list of available connections is shown in Figure 9 . These connectors can be used in any combination at both the line and the load side as needed for the application .

Front connect kit installation

In order to attach cable terminals or bus conductor extensions to the line and load bus adapters, proceed with the following steps .

Step 1

Remove the four screws (or five screws for a four-pole breaker) while holding the front of the arc hood . Also remove the four screws (or five screws for a four-pole breaker) to remove the front of the shroud that is mounted on the load side (Figure 10) .

Step 2

With the screws removed, pull out the front of the arc hood and set it aside (Figure 11) . Follow the same procedure to remove the front shroud at the load side .

Slide each of the baffles forward and out to provide proper access to the bus adapters (Figure 12) .

Step 4

Remove four screws and lift up front cover . On the line side, remove the three screws on the secondary contact block assembly . Slide out secondary contact block shield . With the screws removed, pull out the secondary contact block assembly . On the load side, pull off the front terminal load shield (Figure 13) .

Access is now available to make the required bus conductor extension or cable terminal connections . Access to the bottom adapters is also now available for bus or cable terminal connections (Figure 14) .

If using bus conductor extensions, start at Step 6. If using cable terminal connection, move to Step 7.

1. Bolt the bus conductor extensions to the breaker bus adapters using the provided hardware . Torque the bolted connections to 30 ft-lb (40 .7 N∙m) .Make sure that the hardware used to make the connections does not extend out past the adapter surface . Check that the bolt goes all the way through the bus adapters .

2. Once the bolted connections are made, replace the baffles removed in Step 3 by sliding them back into position, making sure that the baffle notches are oriented toward the breaker . The bus extensions will fit through the space available between the baffles and the arc hood . Replace secondary block assembly shield .

3. Replace the secondary contact block assembly previously removed in Step 4 .

4. Replace front of the arc hood and the front of the shroud previously removed in Step 1 and Step 2 . Replace front cover .

5. Phase barriers made from flexible rubber material are supplied with the bus extension kit, along with the cable terminals . The phase barriers should be installed to the right and left of the center bus connector extension on both the line and the load sides . These phase barriers provide proper insulation integrity (Figure 16) .

m CAUTIONMAKE SURE THE PHASE BARRIERS FROM STEP 6.5 ARE PROPERLY INSTALLED BEFORE PLACING THE CIRCUIT BREAKER INTO SERVICE. FAILURE TO FOLLOW THESE REQUIREMENTS COULD RESULT IN EQUIPMENT DAMAGE AND/OR FAILURE.

Step 7

Cable terminal connections can be made directly to the bus adapters inside the breaker or to the bus conductor extensions that extend out of the line and load sides of the breaker (refer to Step 5) . Cable terminals are shown in Figure 19 and described in Table 3 .

To complete the connections, proceed with the following steps .

1. Bolt the cable terminals directly to the bus adapters using the hardware provided (Figure 19) . Cable terminals can also be bolted to the bus connector extensions (Figure 20) . Torque the bolted connections to 30 ft-lb (27 N∙m) .

2. Install additional cable terminal connections as required (Figure 21) . Complete cable installation before proceeding with next step .

3. Replace the front of the arc hood and the shroud as previously removed in Step 1 and Step 2 . The baffles removed in Step 1 are no longer required in the arc hood if connecting cable terminals directly to the bus adapter . The newly mounted cable terminals will now perform the baffles’ function . However, if connecting the cable terminals to a bus conductor extension, re-install baffles before replacing the arc hood and shroud .

4. Phase barriers made from a flexible rubber material are supplied with the cable terminals . If using cable terminals connected to bus connecter extensions, phase barriers must be installed to the right and left of the center cable terminal on both the line and the load sides (to the right and left of the two center cable terminals for four-pole) (Figure 22) . These phase barriers provide proper insulation integrity .

As an option, customers can order a terminal shield to install at the line side of the front connect breaker (Figure 23) .

5. When making the cable terminal connections, properly torque the cable retaining screws and periodically check all mounting hardware for proper torque loading . Refer to Figure 24 for rope lacing support instructions .To remove the cable terminals, reverse the procedure described above .

Wrap breaker cables with 3/8 inch nylon or equivalent rope as shown in Figure having a minimum tensile strength of 2000 pounds at 6 inches from terminals and every additional 6 inches with five wraps or every additional 1 inch withone wrap.

Hybrid connected configurationsThe hybrid breaker configuration family of rear-fixed adapters (Table 1) and front-fixed connectors (Table 2) may be used interchangeably on the line side or load side of the breaker . Figure 25 and Figure 26 show two of the most common configurations . For proper installation procedures, please refer to pages 3–9 of this manual or contact the Eaton production facility for further information .
