Use Boolean operators AND, OR, NOTUse Google Advanced search or Google ScholarUse subscription resources!
Boolean logic is essentially very simple. When used in constructing a search expression, it can be very useful in specifying exactly what information you want.
The basis of Boolean logic can be illustrated by the following diagrams:
Boolean 'AND’ This is expressed as 'blue AND yellow' in a search.
When using AND in this search expression, results retrieved will contain both blue and yellow information. The results will not include those documents containing only blue or only yellow information. In the diagram the documents retrieved by using this search expression are contained within the green area.
Boolean logic
When using OR in this search expression, results retrieved will contain either blue information, or yellow information, or blue and yellow information together. Such a search will not merely retrieve documents containing only blue information or only yellow information. In the diagram the documents retrieved by using this search expression are contained within all the colour areas.
EXAMPLE: ceramics OR pottery This will retrieve all records containing the keywords ceramics or pottery, as well as those containing both.
When using NOT in this search expression, results will contain only blue. The NOT operator will exclude yellow completely and thus any green information will be excluded also. It is important, therefore, to be careful when using this operator in order to avoid hindering your search. In this diagram the documents retrieved by using this search expression are contained within the blue area.
EXAMPLE: film NOT photography This will retrieve all records containing the keyword film but not the keyword photography.

Why shouldn’t I cut and paste ? Copyright – explain intellectual property – new

No independent learning – don’t understand or absorb information

Making effective notes“New research shows that if learning is their (students) goal, using a laptop during class is a terrible idea. Taking notes by hand forces you to actively listen and decide what's important.
It's not just because internet-connected laptops are so distracting. It's because even if students aren't distracted, the act of taking notes on a computer actually seems to interfere with their ability to remember information.
Laptop users remember less information later on.Vox Science & Health March 2015

A Mind-Map is a logical pattern and it is also creative
Mind MapsMind-Maps are brilliant because they mix colour, pictures and imagination with logical and sequential information. This means that they use both sides of your brain, giving you double the power!
The key to note-taking
Only what is Important but Everything you need
Teachers often assume students can take notes but don’t teach how to do it:Provide templates or Q&A boxesUse KWL gridsHelp students to pick out key words and phrasesModel note-takingWebsites: cut & paste what you need then make notes by making mind-maps, bullet points, highlighting etc.
Dear Milkman,We hope you are well. We are OK but we have had an awful week. We normally have 4 pints every day but tomorrow we only want 1 pint because we are going to a funeral. On Saturday we need 3 pints and a carton of orange juice because we are bringing Aunty back with us. On Sunday we need 2 pints and a pot of cream because Aunty will make a crumble.
Thank you.No.25(Mum, Dad, Sophie, Daniel & the cats)
The key to note-taking
Referencing Encourage teachers to insist on sources from Year 7 Simple bibliography template at KS3 GCSE sessions Subject based sessions for sixth form students Bibliography tools online Practical activities Cite them Right!
Assessment and evaluation
Build in self & peer assessment as often as possible
Encourage bibliographies from Year 7
Students are more satisfied with their work if they have assessed it honestly
Use post-it notes to evaluate learning.Groups, pairs or individuals can answer:
What have I learnt?
What have I found easy?
What have I found difficult?
What do I want to know now?
Whole-school information literacy Ensure generic list of skills agreed by all departments
(IL committee ?)
Audit of current practice
Do not assume information literacy is age-related
Decide your own IL model
Provide Assessment document (note some skills are covered more often within subjects than others)
Ensure skills progression through the key stages
Provide training & guides for staff
Spiralling Curriculum
Important to start young
Repeat skills on a regular basis and through different subjects
Measure progression – vital to ensure value
