Research:

“Just as a carpenter needs the right tools (such as a saw and hammer) and basic skills (such as how to measure and cut wood) to frame a house, students need the right tools (such as notebooks and assignment pads) and basic study skills (such as reading and note-taking skills) to be successful in school” (Joan Sedita, 1999).

STUDY SKILLS: Reading“Students with learning problems must be taught strategies to help them acquire information quickly from a variety of printed materials.” (Cecil D. Mercer, 2011).

SQ3R

Survey: pre-reading; scanning reading material to determine major points

Questions: turning the title, headings, and subheadings into questions.

Read: looks for answers to previewed questions; reads one section at a time; rereads parts that are not clear; takes notes

Recite: seeing, saying, and hearing

Review: ongoing process; verifies answers during the rereading portion

SQW3R is a derivation of SQ3R wherein students write questions after each subheadings.

(Mercer, Mercer, & Pullen, 2011)
