No one is born able to do everything. Everyone has the ability to learn our curriculum and to

make growth in science skills and abilities. Your success in math has nothing to do with

luck. It has everything to do with how much EFFORT you put into learning the content!

Here is a rubric for you to use to self-assess how much EFFORT you are putting into daily class

discussions and work.

Effort Rubric

4

I respectfully listen to the information that my teacher presents during class. I volunteer to answer

questions and participate in discussions. I work on each task that I am given until I am finished. I

push myself to continue working even when a problem is challenging or difficult to understand. I

view difficult questions as an opportunity to improve. I do not rush through assignments for the sake

of finishing them, but I think about each of the questions I am answering or tasks that I am

completing to make sure that what I turn in is my BEST work. I follow directions the first time

given. I make an effort to collaborate with my classmates to complete labs. I take advantage of any

retake opportunities.

3

I listen in class and complete the assignments that are given. I push myself when problems are

difficult or challenging to complete. I check over my work before I turn it in to make sure I have

done my best. I make an effort to collaborate with my classmates to complete labs. I take advantage

of any retake opportunities.

2

I put some effort into listening during class, but often choose to think about other things while my

teacher is talking. I put some effort into solving the problems or completing tasks, but I stop when a

problem becomes difficult, or I don’t understand what I am supposed to do. I just guess and write

down something so I don’t leave anything blank. I make some effort to collaborate with others, but

get easily distracted and off task. I rarely take advantage of retake opportunities.

1

I put very little effort into listening in class and often choose to focus my attention elsewhere. I put

very little effort into solving problems or completing tasks. I skip difficult problems and either leave

them blank or copy down someone else’s work. I do not work with others in my group. I do not

follow directions. I do not take advantage of retake opportunities.

0

I put no effort into my work. I do not even complete assignments.

My EFFORT Goal for this quarter:

• Last quarter my effort score was ________.

• This quarter, I hope to improve my effort score to _________.

• This quarter, I hope to improve my effort score to _________.

view difficult questions as an opportunity to improve.

• This quarter, I hope to improve my effort score to _________.

done my best.
