Egg donation program is especially designed for women unable to conceive using their own
eggs. Program provides an opportunity to several infertile women to experience a pregnancy
and to bear a child.
This fact sheet about egg donation has been written to help potential egg donors considering
the option of donating their eggs and the patient considering the donated eggs for treatment.
There are various reasons why some women may only be able to bear a child using donated
eggs by other women. The decision of using donated eggs or to become a donor is a complex
one with lifelong implications.
Reasons that a woman might need donor’s egg include:
Her own eggs are failing to fertilize or are unable to sustain ongoing pregnancy
Undergone a premature menopause or ovarian failure
Ovarian failure due to chemotherapy treatment for cancer
High chance of passing on a serious genetic conditions
Born without ovaries
Undergone repeatedly unsuccessful on the IVF program
Who can be a known egg (oocyte) donor?
Those who:
Are ideally between 25 and 40 years of age
Are aware of risk associated with the program
Are not at a high risk of genetic infectious disease
Will complete a genetic and medical health questionnaire
Are prepared to undertake screening tests for genetic diseases and undergo for a
counseling session
Have good health with no medical history
If married or in a relationship, the partner must consent to the donation

It is essential that you are completely comfortable with the treatment and decide to go with it
only on a fully informed basis.
What does the testing/ screening process involve?
The donor is tested for infectious diseases including HIV, Chlamydia, Syphilis and Hepatitis B&C.
Basic screening involve hormone and pelvic ultrasound testing which is typically conducted on
the 3rd or 4th day of menstrual cycle. If you cleared to proceed past your basic screening,
another entire process includes a physical assessment, psychological testing, reviews of your
personal and family medical psychological histories, and lab work.

Becoming an Egg Donor
Treatment
Before and during the treatment, a healthy lifestyle is recommended including a sensible approach to diet, exercise and alcohol.Eat balanced healthy diet with adequate amount of protien, fibre and carbohydrate. Need to stop smoking and alcohol prior totreatment. The date of treatment commencement will be informed by the coordinator.
Final Review
The coordinator and fertility specialist will do a final review before commencing the treatment on the counselling reports,consent forms and blood tests to ensure everything is fine and ready to begin the treatment.
Counselling Session
This counselling session is mandatory to attend for women and their partners considering donating eggs. It provides theopportunity to discuss treatment openly and freely. Also allow couples to raise issues including individual concerns, current lifesituation and relationship difficulties that may affect their experience of treatment.
Treatment Information Session
Prior to commencing treatment you will need to attend this session where a coordinator will inform you about medications, cycletreatment, side effects and also discuss the day to day requirements throughout a treatment cycle. In addition you will asked tofill consent forms and signed.
Screening Tests
Screening process is necessary prior to treatment. You will need to get the blood tests completed including HIV (AIDS), Syphilis,Cystic Fibrosis, Blood Group, Human T-Lymphotropic Virus (HTLV) 1+2, Hepatitis B&C, Cytomegalovirus and Karyotype. In somecases, your partner also need to perform some screening test.
Medical Consultation
You and your partner will be asked to attend a medical consultation with the fertility specialist in which whole medical procedurewill be explained and all relevant medical details will be analysed. Sometimes to check the normality of the ovaries and uterus, avginal ultrasound examination is performed.

To Begin Treatment Cycle
Donor Recipient
Plan pre- IVF cycle plan with the coordinatoron Day 1 of cycle
A session to discuss and plan all medications thatwill be required
A blood test to ensure that the medication isworking. Also an appointment with the nurse toteach how to do injections
Planned vaginal ultrasound for monitoring withminimum of one blood test
36 hours prior to Egg Collection, trigger (injection) isgiven
Egg collection procedure is done usually in day underlight anesthetic
You will keep in contact with your nurse for over 2weeks following the process. Expect your menstrualperiod in approximately 10 days
Counselling appointment and medical review
Once your donor has phoned with her period,your coordinator will contact you. You alsoneed to keep record of your cycle.
Medication will be prescribed for synchronisingcycle. A session to discuss plan and process.
Blood tests to plan start of treatment cycle.
To confirm endometrial thickness, vaginalultrasound is performed.
Progesterone commences after 12 hours of donortrigger.
Your male partner will be required to provide semensample (discuss any concerns with the coordinator ifany). Your donor will be having egg collection on thesame day and may need your support.
For fertilization process, you will be contacted thefollowing day.
Fresh embryo transfer between 3-5 days and anyexcess embryo will be frozen for cryopreservation.
As advised continue your medications. DO NOT STOPany medication until unless discussed with thedoctor.
16 days after egg collection, pregnancy test isperformed.

Chances that a Donor Egg Cycle will result in Pregnancy
The success of egg donor program depends on several factors but is not considered to be
related to the age of the recipient. However it is directly related to the donor’s age and the
number and the quality of the donated eggs. The average birth rate per embryo transfer for all
egg donor programs is around 55%.
Risks & Side effects
Anyone undergoing the procedure should be aware of the possible side- effects of medications
used. Minor symptoms which subside with the treatment cessation include swelling of the
abdomen, tiredness, breast soreness and nausea. Women considering donating oocyte should
be aware of the risks associated with the process, out of which some are comparable with the
risks of elective surgery. Discuss all issues with your treating specialist.
