Dear Friends How are your New Year’s resolutions going? Anecdotally, many people have caved in on them by now (start of February) and also so many people have had such little success with them in the past that their only resolution is not to make resolutions! Resolutions tend to be mainly about self improvement in some way - physically, emotionally, spiritually, financially, relationally and so on

which means that the motivation to make a resolution is not a bad one at all if we are committed to the goal, even if the method is perhaps not always the best tool (i.e. sheer will power). The good news is that February has a good number of opportunities for those of you who either didn’t make resolutions or who have already given up on the ones you have made.

First of all, on the first Sunday in February we will be holding our second ‘EcoChurch’ Sunday. Last year we achieved a bronze award for our work around making conscious environmentally sensitive decisions as a PCC and Church/Mission Community. We have invited Jack Wakefield, who works with Tear Fund, particularly around environmental engaged theology, to come and preach at our 9.30 and 11am services at St Edwards. Jack was also a member of a confirmation group I led when I was a curate so it is a personal delight to see him not only growing in his faith but also helping us to grow in ours. It would be great to welcome you on our Eco Church Sunday at either of those services whether you are used to going to church or not. You will find Jack engaging, inspiring and I dare say challenging too. Resolution Opportunity #1 - Live lighter on the earth

The following Sunday we will be considering our personal stewardship responsibilities with regard to the Mission Community - our own personal giving - financial, time-wise, gifts and prayer. There will be a non-pressurised opportunity to prayerfully reflect on your own circumstances and how you can bless the wider mission community. Resolution Opportunity #2 - Bless the Ministry of Forder Valley Mission Community with your resources (Parish of Eggbuckland with Estover) Fairly swiftly after that we hit Lent which is, self consciously, an opportunity to consider ways that we might grow in our faith and make specific resolutions (of a kind) accordingly. This year Keith, Carl

and I have been considering how we might best support you all to grow in faith and we have come across a book (or more correctly—a short series of books) by James Bryan Smith. We would like to offer a book group style lent course where we read a chapter of the book ‘The Good and Beautiful God’ each week, practise the exercises it suggests and meet together to reflect and support each other in what we are learning.

I have been reading through the series in preparation and have found it very helpful - perhaps the best and most practical thing I have read on how to allow the Gospel to transform and change us. I am very excited about

what this might do for those who come along to the group and I encourage you to take this opportunity to engage with this. I do believe this may well change your life!! I haven’t settled on a proper format yet but am considering running it at lunchtimes (12pm) on Tuesdays during Lent at Christ Church/ELM Cafe, Estover and on a Tuesday evening at Eggbuckland Vicarage (100, Church Hill) 7.30pm - though I am open to additional or better suggestions - I am keen that anyone interested gets an

opportunity to do this. Please let me know of your interest and I will try to support. Resolution#3 - get involved in the Lent Course/ All this talk of resolutions brings to mind the resolution (or perhaps it’s my aspiration and hope) for this next year that I have shared with our staff/MLT and PCC: That we might 1) increase the number of those who are journeying with us in this Mission Community 2) deepen our faith in Jesus Christ and in what it means to be a disciple of Jesus 3) Enrich our community life together - that we might have better friendships with each other, care for each other deeper and be a community who welcomes and is welcomed by our geographical communities. I pray that you too might resolve to join us on this journey together this year. Every Blessing Chris

MINISTER’S MESSAGE

Jokes from Crackers to drive you Crackers

On which of his voyages was Capt Cook killed? The last one. What is the best parting gift for a man who retires? A comb. What ten letter word starts with petrol? Automo-bile. Did you hear about the composer who spent most of his time in bed? He wrote sheet music. What’s worse than biting into an apple and finding a grub? Finding half a grub. What will the envelope say when you lick it? Noth-ing; it shuts up.

It’s at this time of the year that thoughts turn to what the months ahead may have in store. Better weather we would certainly hope, after months that have been very wet and windy. We know that that there are great improvements afoot for our Church Hall and on page 18 David Loynes outlines the progress to date. Also, this year will see the overhaul of our church organ. As for the City, it’s never been a secret that I cannot wait for the day when Plymouth Airport

is operational again. If the Planning Inspector finds in favour of the City Plan, then we can hope that need, not greed, will prevail and the site will be reacquired for aviation purposes, providing employment opportunities which could include apprenticeships. The various housing developments will continue, with that of Seaton being most relevant to our parish and, of course we will watch with interest the establishment of the Derriford Community Park and no doubt, as

motorists, be affected by all the road workings at the junction of the Forder Valley and Novorossiysk Road when they begin. Nationally, there has to be progress made with Brexit negotiations no matter how much other EU countries, certain ones in particular, try to be as awkward as possible. Ultimately, we are all interdependent and a spirit of cooperation will be of mutual benefit. On the international front, how much longer can President Donald Trump cling on to power if continuing to make daily outrageous pronouncements and displaying such disdain for other nations? The embarrassment and eventual shame of the

American people must eventually lead to his downfall. A greater awareness of environmental issues (except by Mr Trump) is really good news and whilst it will take years, indeed decades, to turn things around, it would seem that most people and countries are beginning to look and slowly move in the right direction.

Whilst the fortunes of Plymouth Argyle will always be impossible to predict, we can be certain that there will be plans for additional student accommodation in the months ahead as well as more coffee shops and changes (seldom for the better) in bus routes. Here’s looking forward to spring.

A defence lawyer meets with his client. “The blood tests are back,” he says. “We have good news and bad news.” “So, what’s the bad news?” asks the cli-ent. “Your DNA matches the blood found on the victim, the murder weapon and the getaway car,” says the lawyer. “OK,” says the defendant. “What’s the good news?” “Your cholesterol is down to normal.”

Only Joking! A man finds an old bottle. He rubs it and is astonished when a

pixie emerges from the bottle’s mouth. “You look tense,” said the pixie. “Would you like a back rub?” “Well, I’d prefer a million pounds,” said the man. “I can’t give you any money,” says the pixie.

“But how about I rub your back?” “Well, how about you get me the latest luxury car?” asks the man. “Sorry,” says the pixie. “But why don’t I work on those shoulders of yours?” “Can you make me taller?” asks the man. “I’d like to be six foot six.” The pixie replies, “Lie down and I’ll get started on your clavicles.” “Hang on,” says the man. “What’s with the back rubs? I thought genies were meant to grant three wishes.” “Who said I was a genie?” replies the pixie. “I’m a massage in a bottle.”

A widower goes to a psychic to see if he can contact his late wife. The séance starts and he finds himself talking to her. “Honey, are you happy?” he asks. “Yes, my husband,” replies the wife. “Happier than you were with me?” asks the husband. “Much, much happier,” replies the wife. “Heaven must be an amazing place,” says the hus-band. “I’m not in Heaven,” replies his wife.

A burglar is robbing a house when he hears a voice saying, “Jesus is watching you.” To his relief he realises it is just a parrot. “What’s your name?” the

burglar asks the parrot. “Moses,” says the parrot. The burglar says, “Moses? What sort of person calls their parrot Moses?” The parrot replies, “The same sort who calls his Rottweiler Jesus.”

A Scots Padre was touring the Holy Land. The ferry that crossed the Lake of Galilee was very expensive. On disembarking he was heard to remark: “No wonder the Lord walked.”

Eggbuckland Community Lunch On the first Wednesday of each month, diners congregate at 12 noon in Eggbuckland Church Hall for a two course meal. This lunch is an ideal opportunity to meet and converse

with others from the local community. Most months there is a guest speaker providing a presentation on a topical subject. Places at this community lunch need to be booked in advance.

Women’s World Day of Prayer Everyone is invited to Christ Church on Friday, 2nd March at 1.30pm for a Women’s World Day of Prayer service. This year’s subject is “All God’s Creation is Good” which has been chosen by the women of Surniname. Especially welcome will be ladies from St Edward’s and St Matthew’s.

Farewell A regular worshipper at St Edward’s and subsequently at Christ Church Estover some time ago, Fred Tye of Mayfair Crescent, died on 5th November aged 92. His funeral service was at Efford Crematorium on 21st November. Fred was well known for his quirky sense of humour and love of motor bikes. It was only a few years ago that he stopped riding. Fred is survived by his wife, Kath.

Parenting Children Course Rev Keith and Annette ran an Alpha Parenting Course at St Matthew’s CE

Primary Academy on Thursday evenings throughout November. The participants

appreciated some time of informality – a break for desserts and then tea or coffee at the end – and the chance to engage with others.

The marathon efforts of Helen Routledge have resulted in the massive sum of £2,700 being donated to the Multiple Sclerosis Society. Helen

wishes to thank all who supported her so generously which inspired her to keep going on a particularly warm October day.

Radio Coverage On Sunday morning, 26th November, our Ground Steward, Jon Lake, could be heard being interviewed on Radio

4 and Radio Devon in a programme about living churchyards. It was quite a feather in the

cap of Eggbuckland to have been singled out for one of the churchyards to be featured. Jon came over very well explaining our ethos for sustainability and that ours is one of only a few churchyards with bee hives.

Organ Refit to Proceed

In last month’s magazine it was reported that at least £2,000 more was needed before a necessary overhaul/refit of the organ in St Edward’s could be undertaken. This amount has now been most generously donated by a lady in memory of her parents who some years ago were very active members of our church. As a result, a Faculty is being sought from the Diocese to allow the necessary work to proceed with the intention that the renovation will be completed sometime later this year.

Christmas Lunch On Saturday, 9th December, the Eggbuckland Ward Councillors organised a community Christmas lunch in the Church Hall attended by

60 diners who also enjoyed the singing of seasonal songs accompanied by Rev Carl on guitar. Enhancing the

pleasure was the excellent waiting on service by youngsters with mild learning difficulties. Raffle proceeds of £130 were generously donated towards church expenses.

Christmas Wreaths The church hall was a hive of activity on 15th December when more than 30 people turned up to make Christmas wreaths under the instruction of Michelle Taberner. The results were most impressive and mince pies and mulled wine just added to the enjoyment of the evening. Michelle must have been delighted that her efforts proved so worthwhile.

Schools Church Visits In the last week of term five school

carol services were held in St Edward’s attended by children

and parents from St Edward’s, St Matthew’s, Austin Farm and Eggbuckland Vale. They were able to admire the decorations in the church porch, the result of craft lessons at St Edward’s CE Academy.

Thanks We would like to thank the Asda store at Estover for providing the oranges for the Christingle service in St Edward’s on 11th December which was very well attended and much enjoyed. Also thanks to the Plymouth Garden Centre for free delivery of the church Christmas tree and subsequent donation of a tree positioned just inside the churchyard entrance.

Candlelit Carols & Lessons To meet the popular demand it was decided to hold two candlelit carols and lessons services this year on 17th December. The first at five o’clock

featured a guest community choir from St Matthew’s and in the second at

seven o’clock, it was the turn of the Eggbuckland Community Choir. In total, the two congregations numbered around 300, the members of which also enjoyed the singing of Eggbuckland Church Choir and impromptu carols by young volunteers accompanied by the guitar of Rev Keith.

Pieces Christmas Eve Nativities Over 500 adults and children attended the three interactive Nativities in St Edward’s during the afternoon of Christmas Eve. We were delighted and so grateful to the Ivybridge Donkey Sanctuary and their staff who gave up their time to bring along a donkey which participated in some of the proceedings. Almost as popular were the craft work sessions during the afternoon in the Church Hall where the team serving seasonal refreshments was kept busy throughout. The efforts of so many made this a very special time on a special day.

Plaque At the request of the War Graves Commission, a small plaque is to be placed by the churchyard entrance gates to advise the general public that there are memorials inside the church listing the names of those whose lives were sacrificed during the 1914-18 and 1939-45 Wars.

New Roof The garage situated in the lower car park of the Church Hall has been fitted with a new roof, replacing the one that was rotting and leaking badly. This building, when fitted with

shelving, can be used as a much needed storage area which will allow a final tidying up of many parts of the church.

Friends Reunited It was a real pleasure to see some familiar faces at services over the Christmas period of members who have not been able to attend church in recent times. Amongst these were Mavis Glanville, Muriel Marshall and Mildred Bickle. A former church member who moved some time ago from her Fort Austin Avenue home to Gloucester, Jean Page, came down for a day to attend a grave in the churchyard and found time to call on some of her friends.

Songs of Praise Members of Christ Church Estover and Crownhill Methodists attended a Christian

Unity Songs of Praise service on Sunday afternoon, 14th February, in St Edward’s. The singing was led by

Eggbuckland Church Choir and the chosen hymns were: Make me a channel of your peace; I know not why God’s wondrous grace; How great Thou art; Let your living water flow over my soul; O Thou who camest from above; Father God, I wonder and Blessed assurance. These were followed by members of the congregation requesting some more favourites. After the service tea and cake was served by the Choir.

School Inspection On 11th January, there was a one day Ofsted inspection of St Edward’s CE Primary Academy. The outcome will not be officially known for a month or so but the Inspector commented that the children were a credit to both their parents and the school.

The Importance of

Trees

This year our Church communal Christmas card raised £72.34 which we have put towards the work of the Woodland Trust. They are planting four new woods to represent the millions of lives lost in the First

World War. These are Langley Vale Woods in England, Dreghorn Woods in Scotland, Coed Ffos Las in Wales

and Brackfield Wood in Northern Ireland. They will be a living, breathing tribute to those who made sacrifices during the war and will create beautiful life-giving places for future generations. They will also help the environment and be wonderful habitats for flora, fauna and wildlife. Woods played an important part in Britain’s war effort, keeping homes warm, powering the delivery of vital supplies by the Navy and propping up the net work of trenches in France. Trees were even replicated artificially to provide a space for an observer or sniper inside. Under cover of darkness, the real tree was cut down and replaced by the replica. By the end of the war, timber supplies were very low and the landscape had changed forever. Prime Minister Lloyd George remarked that Britain came closer to losing the war through lack of timber than want of food. We recently watched a TV programme by Judi Dench entitled “My Love for Trees” in which she discovered more about trees and, in particular, the trees in the wood near her house. How fascinating it was to see the underground network of fungi which helps to decompose the leaves that fall on the woodland floor and how the trees ‘talk’ to

each other through this network. I also didn’t know that the trees released unwanted toxins into the leaves that they then shed in autumn. The Japanese activity of ‘forest bathing’ or shirin-yoku, developed in the 1980’s, has been scientifically proven to improve your health and is becoming popular here in the UK. It

has been proven to lower the heart rate and blood pressure, reduce stress hormone production, boost the immune system and

improve the overall feeling of well-being. The point of forest bathing is to sit or meander through the forest, relaxing and drinking in the atmosphere, letting nature heal your spirit and just ‘being’ with trees. The air is not only fresher and better but the trees emit various essential oils (called phytoncides) to protect themselves from germs and insects which have been scientifically proven to improve our immune system! We have had some lovely walks in the woods over Christmas and the New Year. In fact, I have just returned from a muddy tramp through the woods in the Forder Valley with my Jack Russell and grand-daughters. It was certainly worth the effort of wrapping up and braving the cold wind. It lifts your spirits and is a reminder that spring is just around the corner. It turns your eyes from your struggles and difficulties (yes, life does seem a bit harder this time of year) and reveals God in all his wonder and glory and infinite care. I have also had some very exciting news that the snowdrops we planted last year have been spotted flowering near the yew tree in the churchyard. Hopefully, as January unfolds and February arrives, we will see more of these little beauties brightening up the dark winter months.

The work on the Church Hall refurbishment is now underway. Prior to Christmas, fire doors were installed in the Nursery on the

lower floor to enable the stair well from the reception to be covered in. This will create a larger floor space in reception and room for easy

chairs and coffee tables for people to relax and socialise. In January, the artex ceiling and tiled flooring were removed from the toilets and reception area to ensure all traces of asbestos were taken away. The wall surrounding the men’s loo has been demolished to make way for unisex toilets. Further demolition work is due to take place in the old ladies’ loo to take out all internal walls and create a parish office. The building work should progress in the weeks ahead with a completion date set for mid-march. We do hope that all users and user-groups understand what we are trying to accomplish and tolerate the temporary measures, including use of portaloos. A significant effort has been made to ensure that activities can continue while the building work takes place. Achievement of funding for the current stage has been a long drawn-out process. Approximately 50% of the cost is coming form four grants: Landfill grant via Viridor Credits The Bernard Sunley Charitable Foundation

The Garfield Weston Foundation The Hobson Charity All the above organisations are keen to support groups to improve local community facilities. This encourages higher levels of participation in community activities and aids social cohesion at a time when local authority spending is under so much pressure. We still have a need for furniture for the reception area and the parish office. If anyone or organisation would like to sponsor these areas, or donate any funds, can they please contact Julian Payne, Peter Anderson or myself. The final stage of the project is to find funding for the disabled access and new entrance door, including electronically operated mechanism. To this end we are getting a visit from the Joseph Rank Foundation to discuss our project particularly the role of the Church’s mission utilising the Church Hall. While we hope for a funding opportunity from this Foundation, nothing is guaranteed. David Loynes

Pavilions Date for Choir The talented St Edward’s CE Academy Choir will be participating in “Musicality” at the Plymouth Pavilions on Saturday, 3rd February at 2.00pm and 6.00pm. This is an annual concert which features various local schools

performing music ensembles. Tickets cost £8 and under 16’s are free.

Only When I Laugh! Often, Christianity is associated with sober reflection and contemplation; our secular society sees a church as somewhere that lacks humour and must be treated as a place of sombre reflection. I have often heard a parent at a Baptism tell their child to be quiet because this is a church. Respect is due when walking into such a building, as it is old and feeble and any laughter would severely hurt the structure! Perhaps as Christians we also frown on the whole idea that Christianity can be seen in an amusing way. One of my favourite situation comedies, in the 60s and 70s was ‘All Gas & Gaiters’, which depicted life in and around a cathedral. The central characters were the Bishop, Archdeacon, Dean and the Bishop’s Chaplain. After returning to the Church of England at the beginning of the new millennium, it was comforting to find that the good old C of E hadn’t changed that much in thirty years of absence and the members of the hierarchy in my favourite comedy were still alive and well. Sometimes as Christians we are inclined to take ourselves too seriously and get hurt

when ridiculed by the world’s satirical observations of our belief. This we can feel is persecution

and defend ourselves, which only adds to the negative reaction we feel we are receiving. In 1979, the Monty Python Team made a film entitled ‘The Life of Brian’. Many Christians protested outside cinemas and some Councils banned it from being shown. Most Christians today see this film as rather tame. The funny side of such a protest is portrayed in an episode of ‘Father Ted’ called ‘The Passion of Saint Tibulus’. Father Ted and his Curate, Dougal, are instructed by the Bishop to hold a protest outside the local cinema against a blasphemous new film. It seems that their visible objections only seek to encourage most of the island’s residents to see the film, including Father Jack. Karl Barth, the famous theologian, once wrote, “Laughter is the closest thing to the grace of God”. I have found that my ability to laugh at myself can be therapeutic, as it helps to realise that our human condition is fallible and far from perfect. We are told that Jesus ‘wept’ but never that he ‘laughed’. Does this mean that he was purely a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief? Or rather did he display all the fruits of the Spirit including Joy? The Psalmist writes: “Our mouths were filled with laughter, our tongues with songs of joy. Then it was said among the nations, “The Lord has done great things for them.””

………………

Hi Everyone, I think February can be rather a dreary month – perhaps hedgehogs and dormice have the right idea hibernating ‘til spring! But let’s be positive, the snowdrops and crocuses are doing their best to bring us some colour and cheer and the days are getting longer. And there are good things happening with our children and young people to encourage us as well. Helen Soole tells us what’s been happening at 60 Watts our Sunday evening youth group: Since September, numbers have grown to thirteen ‘mini teens’. During our Sunday evening at youth club they can play a variety of games from pool to battleships. Julian has added his IT skills and the youth have even

made mini films. Every week there is a different craft from banner making for the church to candle art. Martha has even raised £50 on ‘Guess the Moose’ towards an outing – hopefully

roller disco. Rev Chris, of course, provides our spiritual needs with a week Bible reading and thought for the day. It’s always good to find out more about the brilliant people who give their time and effort to helping our various groups. Here Sue Lake shines the spotlight on Pauline:

‘Eddy Bears’ would like to say a big “thank you” to Pauline who is one of our grand mums. She offered to stay on and help us when her grand daughter started school. Her help is invaluable. She comes in early to help set up the toys. She makes the hot drinks for the adults and painstakingly cuts the fruit into small pieces for little fingers to manage. She always has a smile, makes everyone feel welcome and makes wonderful cakes! We really don’t know how we would manage without her.

We do have lovely volunteers, don’t we? As for other news, ‘Open the Book’ assemblies are going well at St Edward’s and St

Matthew’s. We would love one or two more adults to join us, so if you think that could be you, please speak to Chris, Keith, Derry or me. Please continue to pray

for our schools. Don’t forget you can look at their websites for more information to help you pray effectively for all their activities. Please pray, too, for all the dedicated people who make our children’s and youth work possible.

Parish Notes from the Past

100 Years Ago As we so often discover when looking back, very little happens relating to the church and churchyard that has not previously occurred, evidenced by the following item in the Parish Magazine in 1918:

Last year we had to rebuild the wall on the south of the churchyard and take down some trees that had caused it to fall. At the same time we had to remove much vegetable growth and even young trees from the surface of the tower. The two together formed a big and even dangerous work; and the cost was £24.4s.10d. The bill is still unpaid. The general offertory account cannot meet the bill and we do not want to open another subscription list. So the Vicar intends to give his Easter Offering this year to pay the bill. We feel quite sure that under the circumstances everyone will give as liberally as they possibly can on Easter Day, not only to show how much they value church services and the efforts of him who is responsible for them, but also to pay off in this way a very pressing debt. Further, we earnestly invite lovers of Eggbuckland Church who cannot be present to send their contributions direct to the Vicar to be placed on the Altar on Easter Day.

Sgt EF Owens, E Lancs Regt was reported to be in the 4th London General Hospital suffering from severe burns from German poison gas. He had been attached to a chemical corps investigating after gas shell bombardments and received his burns on the Cambrai section of the front. In his own words: “I would rather have had three large wounds than half these burns.” He expressed the wish to worship again in Eggbuckland.

Harry Somerville Knight, son of Mrs Knight of Higher Crabtree, lost his life while serving on HMS Raglan. He had seen 16 years Naval service. William Alfred Wiltshire of 38 Hyfield Terrace, Laira died in Singapore Hospital. He had been one of the survivors of HMS Triumph which was sunk in the Dardanelles. There will still be many members of St Edward’s who will remember Queenie Hill who died in 2009. A lifelong worshipper here, she had been a Sunday School teacher and one of the leading flower arrangers. On 20th February, 1918 her future parents, Miss Lily Walke and Private Walter Winsor were married in St Edward’s. The bridegroom was on leave from the front and his uniform displayed the ribbons of the DCM, MM and the Mons Star.
