EGM 3601: Jared’s Sample Problem Set 1 Information & Disclaimer: Note: Unless otherwise specified, these problems are from R. C. Hibbeler’s Mechanics of Materials textbook, 10th edition,
published by Pearson, © 2017. Again, to be explicitly clear, I do not own these problems, or any related material, but recommend
them for students as study materials. The images provided with this problem set are intended to be for students’ convenience.
Provided here are some problems that may be helpful for you as students trying to study Solid Mechanics. Their
solutions will be available in the later portion of this document. The problems are broken into categories based on their
conceptual focus. I apologize in advance that the problems as I solve them may not always follow the order they are
given in the textbook (i.e., 1-38 precedes 1-34).
In my solutions, I will be more thorough in explaining my reasoning during earlier problems, to more clearly show why I
do what I do. In later problems, I may not explain quite as much, because I assume that you’ve already read my
explanations once in the prior solutions, and I don’t want these solutions to become dozens of pages longer than they
should be. For reference, you may find this sheet helpful.
