Context
The Hudson’s site is located on Woodward Avenue between East Grand River Avenue and Gratiot Avenue, in the middle of the commercial center of downtown Detroit, and as a consequence is interwoven with the social, cultural and economic fabric of the city. The significance of the Hudson’s site is tied to the rich history of Detroit, and the area continues to be synonymous with the holiday season and the city’s downtown shopping tradition. However, with the loss of the historic Hudson building, the area has lost its focal point and its exclamation of grandeur. The design is an example of how to improve the economic, social, and cultural aspects of urban rejuvenation, while remaining in tune with the traditions of seasonal holiday celebrations and downtown shopping.
![Page 39: egor fufachev architectural portfolio 2013](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022051423/568c4c441a28ab49169f7093/html5/thumbnails/39.jpg)
39
Concept
We combine a system of mobile collectors and an innovative idea of digital awareness, in which the collector engage with the public, serve as focal points, and ultimately creates a fluid network of digital retail spaces that expand and contract according the new dynamics of a digital based community.
![Page 40: egor fufachev architectural portfolio 2013](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022051423/568c4c441a28ab49169f7093/html5/thumbnails/40.jpg)

The Hudson: Contracted and Expanded
The Hudson Hub
How do you improve the economic, social, and cultural aspects of a city, as well as creating a fluid network of digital retail, commercial, and entertainment spaces that expand and contract according to the new dynamics of a digitally based community?
![Page 41: egor fufachev architectural portfolio 2013](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022051423/568c4c441a28ab49169f7093/html5/thumbnails/41.jpg)
41
Our design proposal focuses on activating the street life of the downtown core by creating a series of hotspots, or in our case, “urban pins” that encourage interaction and communication. These pins are dispersed throughout the city, but remained connected on the digital network. By using the existing light rail networks as an infill and ex-fill mechanism, our design spreads the activities normally associated with retail centers, malls, plazas and town squares throughout the downtown core, and in doing so, strengthens the connection with the existing vibrancy of the city.
![Page 42: egor fufachev architectural portfolio 2013](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022051423/568c4c441a28ab49169f7093/html5/thumbnails/42.jpg)
42
The Parking
The existing underground parking lot is integrated into the building. Information relating to availability and location of parking stalls, as well as the light rail schedule and stops are displayed on the pins.
The Stage
This configurations further loosens the boundaries of the building, and changes the perception of experience from one of a private to a public space.
The Market
The fourth configuration transforms the space into a public market with elements of the traditional market square combined with the digital retail experience.
![Page 43: egor fufachev architectural portfolio 2013](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022051423/568c4c441a28ab49169f7093/html5/thumbnails/43.jpg)
43
The Point
This configuration fully dissolves the building and transforms it into an urban focal point providing access and amenities such as wi-fi hotspots, mobility information, media, and entertainment.
The Hall
The Hall configuration transforms the space into a series of large and small scale niches where various events and activities can be held.
The Mall
The mall configuration allows for the traditional shopping mall experience, with closed and open retail spaces and provides a more intimate experience.

She woke up early this morning. Maybe because of a headache caused by prosecco on the yesterday corporate party, or maybe because she was still feeling excited about the deal that her company made yesterday. She did a good job – this deal was totally her merit - and she knew she would be awarded: maybe a new apartment, bigger one, with a view to the Central Park…
She remembered when she came to Songdo for the first time – it was almost an empty island, flat, with just a few residential towers, and trees were such small that even didn’t drop shadows. Her company was one of the first to move its headquarters to Songdo, so she was forced to move there too. At the beginning she used to hate this place, especially walking along empty streets with an infinite feeling of being watched, controlled by invisible beholder with millions of eyes steering at her from the dark emptiness of windows. But year by year the island became more alive, and less empty windows were left to watch her. Besides, the company was growing fast expanding its interests to the North East Asia and then - to the whole world, so most of her time she had to spend in a plane on her way to meet a new client somewhere far away from Songdo. In a rush she never had enough time to explore new cities and usually flew away right after the meeting, but she always used to buy some souvenirs from a new place: mask, painting, cup, musical instrument. Every time she came back from a business trip a new element was added to her apartment, and now, after several years it became a bizarre collection of small pieces of different cultures and epochs occupying every part of her flat.
She got dressed and went outside to by something for breakfast. It was Saturday morning and the market on the plaza San Marco was already open. She came to Giuseppe, old Italian, to by her favorite bread – soft inside with crispy crust, which he bakes by an original recipe of his mother who used to live in Venice before the flood. Since two years nobody lives there anymore – incessant rains washed the city away. She always dreamed that one day she would come to Venice, couple of times even bought tickets, but every time appeared a new client on the opposite side of the globe and she had to change her direction. Now Venice is gone, and the closest she can get to it is this bread from Giuseppe, soft inside with crispy crust.
