Joker already set up bombs on two boats, and he gave each boat captain a bomb
switch, which was able to ignite the bombs on the other ship if a captain turns on a
controller.
However, if none of the captains does trigger the bombs, the joker will explode the
two boats at once.
The two captains and the people on two boats could not make up their mind of
whether or not explode the opposite boat.
In this part, we can see their moral thoughts took place in their mind.
SUMMARY
ANALYSIS
Boat that contained innocent people: They are not sure if they should explode the
boat that has prisoners who committed crimes.
Boat that contained criminals: Even though they want to live, but they felt
that they should not turn on the controller to kill the innocent people.
Moral Issues Involves
Obligation
Control or determine the life of other people
Option
Explode the opposite boat and save their own lives or being killed by the joker. On the civilian boat, they voted on whether to strike
the other ship or not.
Impediments Responsible action of the captains
is to protect the lives of their passengers, but the impediments that they encountered were to kill
the people on the other boat, which is immoral.
Factual issues Why did Joker want the two boats
to kill each other?
How could Joker place the bombs on the two boats without causing
any suspiciousness from the captains?
Why was the time, which Joker wanted to explode two boats at 12 PM? Is it because he was waiting
for batman to show up?
Conceptual issues
Who are criminals?
Who are we to decide someone else life is less/more worth it?
Application issues
Killing people is a crime, and if the innocent people kill the prisoner
in the other boat, so are the innocent people also considered
criminals and deserved die as well?
Did all the prisoners commit the same severe crimes, such as killing
people?
Any Question?
Nobody panics when things go 'according to plan.' Even if the
plan is horrifying! If, tomorrow, I tell the press that, like, a gang
banger will get shot, or a truckload of soldiers will be blown up, nobody panics,
because it's all 'part of the plan'.
But when I say that one little old mayor will die, well then…
EVERYONE LOSES THEIR MINDS!
