PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGEAloha Mililani Uka Ohana,

Preparing our students to meet the challenges of the 21st Century means that we must provide the opportunities for our students to not only excel academically but in all ways. We begin by shar-ing our Ha’aheo and Na Hoku students who were honored at our April Assembly. This year, fourth grader Kayla Tansiongco was our representative in the State Geographic Bee. She did well, scoring better than some 8th grade students!

In this Egret Talk Story, we also feature our Egret Chorus, Track Team, Jump Rope Team as well as our student artists who created posters for our “Sight is Beautiful” poster contest sponsored by the Hawaii Lions Club. Two of our students, Jamie Hirota from kindergarten and Alyssa Livers from grade three have their posters entered into the regional level.

Additionally we feature our students who are learning to be good citizens. Our student council spon-sored a food drive for the Food Bank and our grade 4 students took their learning to Windward Mall to share what they learned about the effect of marine debris on our plants and animals in our ecosystem.

Due to your support of our school, we are able to provide opportunities for our students to learn that extend beyond the classroom. Mahalo Mililani Ohana!

Much Aloha,

Heather Wilhelm, Principal

April 2012 Assembly Honorees

MUSIC LASTS A LIFETIME

March 29 found the Mililani Complex schools together at the Mililani High School gymnasium for the Mililani Complex Choral Music festival. The Egret chorus under the direction of Nicholas Puzon shared two songs composed by Teresa Jennings. It was wonderful to hear the harmonies sung by our 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students as they shared “In this World Together” and “It Takes a Little Faith”.

SAFETY REMINDER – Good Citizenship

Please remind students that the park, including the courts, is used by the YMCA A+ for their after-school program. They have the use of the facilities authorized by the City and County Parks and Recreation Department from 2:00-4:30 PM. Mililani Uka students are NOT to be at the courts or the park after-school. It is NEVER ok to ride their bikes on the courts as this causes damage to the surface. We need to be good neighbors and follow the rules of the park.

“Type to Learn” at Home

One of the 21st Century technology skills that we need students to develope is keyboarding. More than ever, with the increased use of computers as a learning tool, our students need to be able to use technology with efficiency. Correct keyboarding skills help students to access information and use that information to demonstrate learning. Students have been introduced to the Type to Learn 4 (TTL4) program which provides guided practice in a fun and interactive setting. Our TTL4 license now includes a web version that your child can access at home. All that is required is internet access and the installation of TTL4 on your computer. Once the program is installed, students can login to their school account and practice key-boarding at home. The program will take about one gigabyte of your hard drive and will take about an hour to download. Keyboarding is an important skill. Take advantage of this learning opportunity for your child.

Letters have been sent home with instructions on how to down load the program. Please let your child’s teacher know if you need assistance. Thank you for your cooperation.

“Sight Is Beautiful” Posters Recognition

Each year the Hawaii Lions Clubs sponsor the “Sight is Beautiful” poster contest throughout the State of Hawaii. Posters are judged in late February at the local level with each school recognizing first, second and third place artists. First place winners are then judged against other schools at the local level and one student’s work is sent on to the regional level.

Students artist were recognized at the April Assembly with certificates and cash prizes awarded by Lion President, Ron Menor and Lion Dick Crislip. This year Mililani Uka had two students work sent to the regional level; from Kindergarten, Jamie Hirota and from third grade, Alyssa Livers. Congratulations to our student artists!
