Knowledgeabouttheactualvalueofwaterasaresourceislimited(Ziolkowska,2015).Thevalueof(ground)waterforirrigationisrepresentedasthecostsofextractingwaterfromaquifersanddeliveringittothefinalconsumer.Thisvaluedoesnotreflectthevalueofwaterasadepletable (non-renewable)resource.Waterforirrigatingcropsmaybeunder-priced,whichcanleadtoirreversibledepletion. Theactualvalueofwaterforirrigationcanberepresentedbytheshadowpriceofwater.Thehighertheshadowpricethesmallerwillbethegapwiththeunknownvalueofwaterasanon-renewableresource.

Wehaveshownthattheshadowpricefornon-renewableorfossilgroundwatercanbedeterminedfromtheeconometricanalysisofhistoricalyieldandpricedatasupplementedwithsimulationsofcrop-waterusefromaglobalhydrologicalmodel.Ourresultsshowthatshadowpricespercropandpercountryvarysignificantly.Thisprovidesopportunitiesforchangingthecropmixwithinandbetweencountriesinordertolimitgroundwaterdepletionortogeneratemorerevenuefromnon-renewablegroundwateruse.
