DevelopeffectivequestioningEffectiveteachersandtrainersuseavarietyoflower-levelandhigher-levelopenquestionsratherthanacontinuousdietofclosedrecallquestions.

Useco-operativesmallgroupworkEffectiveteachersandtrainersusecooperativesmallgroupworksothatalllearnersareabletodiscussimportantideas.Thishaspositiveeffectsonlearning,socialskillsandself-esteem.

EmphasisemethodsratherthananswersEffectiveteachersandtrainersdonotworrytoomuchaboutwhetherornotlearnerscompleteeverytask,butinsteadtheytrytoincreasethepoweroflearnerstoexplainandusemathematicalideas.

UserichcollaborativetasksEffectiveteachersandtrainersuserichcollaborativetasksthat:

• areaccessibleandextendable;• allowlearnerstomakedecisions;• involvelearnersintesting,proving,explaining,reflecting,interpreting;• promotediscussionandcommunication;• encourageoriginalityandinvention;• encourage‘whatif?’and‘whatifnot?’questions;• areenjoyableandcontaintheopportunityforsurprise.

CreateconnectionsbetweenmathematicaltopicsEffectiveteachersandtrainersuseactivitiesthatcreateconnectionsbetweencloselyrelatedconceptsandnotations(suchasdivision,fractionandratio).
