I am excited for a new school year and a renewed commitment to 1) our HASD mission statement: “Our community ensures every student learns at the highest level” and 2) our HMS positive school-wide behavior framework that teaches and expects all students to live the Polar BEAR Way : B e honest, E xceed expectations, A ccept responsibility, and R espect others. Eighth Grade Language Arts students communicate effectively using a variety of oral, written, and twenty-first century technology skills. In the second quarter, students examine persuasive techniques in media and advertisements and write a persuasive paper. In the third quarter, students conduct a research project and write a formal MLA style research paper. As a culminating fourth quarter activity, students create and publish fictional paper or digital DEADLINE magazines. Students: Follow ALL class expectations below to ensure that you experience success in Language Arts this year! Pledge to follow each expectation, sign this contract, and return it to Ms. Miller tomorrow signed by a parent. I will bring the following required materials to class EACH DAY: DOL Booklet (and Textbook as assigned) USB Flash Drive / Ear phones/buds Notebook & Folder – for LA class ONLY Pencils/Red pens/Highlighters (Replace as needed!) Assignment Notebook & Loose Leaf Paper Library Card (number) /Lined 3 x 5 index cards (3 rd quarter) Three-Ring Binder for DEADLINE (4 th quarter) Laptop / iPad / mobile learning device (BYOD optional) I will use our class WEB SITE FREQUENTLY to study and complete online assignments at home. I will complete ALL assignments. However, I will only receive PARTIAL credit for late assignments. Welcome to Eighth Grade Language Arts! I am excited for a new school year and a renewed commitment to
