PROCLAIMING GOD’S WORD

MESSAGE FOR OUR YOUNGEST DISCIPLES Pastor Julia

After the Children’s Message, children ages 3 years through 6th grade may go to the Chapel for a large group worship, scripture and short lesson. We will return during the Doxology to sing the last hymn.

PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION Sharon Tipton

FIRST SCRIPTURE READING Luke 11:1-4

He was praying in a certain place, and after he had finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples.” He said to them, “When you pray, say: Father, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come. Give us each day our daily bread. And forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive everyone indebted to us. And do not bring us to the time of trial.”

One: The Gospel of our Lord.

All: Praise to you, O Christ.

ANTHEM “Celtic Laud”

For fruit of the vine, for harvest of wheat, for bread and for wine, the gift of Your feast. The cup of thanksgiving I gratefully raise, O Lord of my living, my love and my praise. For dove in the sky, for wind in thee trees, for cool in the fire, Your spirit in me. For springtime’s green earth, for morning’s first light, for every new birth, for grace and for life, the cup of thanksgiving I gratefully raise. O lord of my living, my love and my praise.

SECOND SCRIPTURE READING Luke 11:5-8

And he said to them, “Suppose one of you has a friend, and you go to him at midnight and say to him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves of bread; for a friend of mine has arrived, and I have nothing to set before him.’ And he answers from within, ‘Do not bother me; the door has already been locked, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot get up and give you anything.’ I tell you, even though he will not get up and give him anything because he is his friend, at least because of his persistence he will get up and give him whatever he needs.

One: The Gospel of our Lord.

TODAY

PESKY JESUS! Today is part 3 of a 4-part sermon series based on four of the parables unique to the Gospel of Luke, with a focus on the pesky ways they challenge our daily living. Remaining theme is:

August 11 Disciples “Pay” (Lk 12)

This summer the CHILDREN will spend time each week learning a hymn. This week’s hymn is “What a Friend We Have in Jesus”. During the sermon time, we will read a story based on the hymn, study the scripture which inspired the hymn and learn to sing the hymn. The children will return to sit with their families, at the end of the service to sing the closing hymn. We are hoping to inspire our younger generation to love congregational singing. Please join us after the 10 a.m. service to breakdown bulk pantry items for NNEMAP. Our cupboard supplies are low and we are in need of flour and sugar. Donations of bottled water, dog & cat food, toilet paper, and personal hygiene items including dental items, razors, shampoo and feminine hygiene products are also needed. Thank you for your help and donations.

SCHOOL SUPPLIES is being collected today.

Don’t forget our ANNUAL ICE CREAM SOCIAL + OSU ALUMNI BAND at 6:00 p.m. tonight on the Village Green. New this year: Bounce House!!! Concert begins at 7:00 p.m.

PASTORS Tom & Betsy Rice are away on vacation.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

The sounds of hymns on the CARILLON following 10:00 worship inspire us to take the worship message out into the community. But we need more ringers! It you can play a simple melody line from the hymn you can do it. Contact Stephen Jacoby at [email protected].

SUPPORT OPPORTUNITY FOR "NEW CONNECTIONS" SERVICE. We are currently looking for a group of volunteers to take turns helping with usher duties for the 5:00 p.m. New Connections service. Responsibilities include early arrival to help with unlocking/relocking doors, welcoming attendees, and assistance with the offering. If interested, please contact Steven Guy (614-783-9564 or [email protected]).

Join us on Sunday, August 11th (8 a.m., 10 a.m. or 5 p.m.) for BLESSING OF THE BACKPACKS (and Salem School Donations). We will pray for our

children, their teachers, school employees and all schools in the Worthington, Dublin, Westerville, Olentangy, and greater Columbus area districts. The return to school, starting a new grade with new teachers and students, even new schools is HUGE for children and their families. It feels more like the beginning of the new year than does the first of January. When the church includes this in the congregation’s worship two things important things happen among children. 1. They realize that they and their lives are

important to the church. They see themselves as significant members of the congregation.

2. They hear that God is with them at school and that their church cares about what happens there. God and church are not “off to the side” or just a Sunday thing.

The RED CROSS BLOOD DRIVE will be here on Monday, August 12th, from 11:30 a.m.–5:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. Please call 1-800-RED-CROSS to make an appointment. Walk-ins are welcome. Thank you to all who give this life-saving donation!

All Church FELLOWSHIP MYSTERY DINNER! Mark your calendars to share dinner at a restaurant located only 11 minutes from our doorsteps on Friday, August 16th. Come celebrate August with old and new friends and family as we bask in Mediterranean atmosphere and cuisine. All ages invited, suitable for families with teenagers up through “seniors young at heart.” We will meet at church at 6:00 p.m. before driving to our 6:30 p.m. reservation. Hope you can join us as we cross the Atlantic Ocean to dine at one of my favorite neighborhood restaurants! KICK-OFF SUNDAY, August 18th, “Here’s My Heart” - Join us as we KICK-OFF the school year! ADULT EDUCATION

FAITH SEEKERS are studying Basic Christian Doctrine by John Leith at 9 a.m. in Room 124. Our current topic is salvation and how justification and sanctification are united in the experience of salvation. In justification God turns toward human beings; in sanctification, God turns human beings toward himself. Sanctification is a process that continues throughout human life.

MISSION

Urgent NNEMAP NEEDS for our next breakdown event are coffee and sugar, but we can also use more flour and salt. Pantry needs are for hygiene items, toilet paper and large size diapers. NNEMAP can buy food cheaply through the Mid-Ohio Food Bank, but hygiene items are not available and clients cannot use food stamps for these items. We also welcome any non-perishable food, especially tuna or canned chicken. Please deposit any contributions into the wooden NNEMAP bin in Fellowship Hall.

Attention School Supplies Shoppers: The stores have begun to offer sales on school supplies! Each year our church collects SCHOOL SUPPLIES for families that cannot afford to purchase all of them. We will collect supplies in the bins in Fellowship Hall on August 4th and 11th. Then we will take them to Salem Elementary. The following is a list of supplies that are needed.

The Board of Deacons TRANSPORTATION MINISTRY is up and running. Our current pool of volunteers has performed well but there is a need to increase the number volunteers on the list. This will allow the co-coordinators to better cover the requests for transportation to medical appointments for congregants. Please consider this volunteer opportunity. To sign up or if you have questions about the ministry, contact Mark Ranck at 217-483-2821 or [email protected].

SUMMER LUNCH PROGRAM AT KILBOURNE MIDDLE SCHOOL: Adult and teen volunteers are needed to serve as bus monitors and to help serve lunch and participate in lunchtime programs, 10 a.m. - 12:45 p.m. Lunch is served Monday through Friday and you can choose a single day or help with multiple. Please contact Pastor Tom Rice to sign up or to find out more.

NEW ~ BEGINNING AUGUST 18th SUNDAY MORNING SAFETY & SECURITY

The Worthington Police Department has consulted with Worthington Presbyterian Church staff members regarding the safety and security of our congregation on Sunday mornings. Our safety committee has been working on implementing their recommendations. One concern has been that our building has so many entrances. Until now, all have been left unlocked on Sunday mornings until about Noon. As you can imagine, this leaves our Sunday school teachers and children vulnerable while the vast majority of us are in the sanctuary, unaware of who might be entering other parts of our building. The recommendation is that we limit the number of doors that are unlocked. Just as many other churches are doing, we will begin locking most of our exterior doors shortly after worship has started. Starting August 18th, we will lock most exterior doors at 10:15 a.m. The main entrance to our sanctuary (from High Street) will remain unlocked, and the entrances near Oxford Street (to the main office hallway or the Preschool) will be monitored by a Sunday secretary who can buzz members in. Please excuse any inconvenience, and please help spread the word that this is for the safety and security of everyone.
