1.4.1 ME 492 Bitirme Projesi
ME 492 Project Topics –Spring 2016
1. Flywheel Energy Car Challenge
Large amounts of kinetic energy can be stored
in a high speed rotating flywheel. If friction
losses are minimized, the stored energy can be
maintained for long time.
Your aim is to design and construct a flywheel
energy car that can travel the longest distance on
concrete or asphalt. The weight of the car should
be less than 5 kg. Energy to the flywheel should
be supplied manually.
2. Stirling Engine Powered Boat
Stirling engines can work with low temperature
differentials compared to internal combustion
engines. Moreover, they are quiet and can use
almost any heat source.
Your aim is to design and construct a Stirling
engine powered boat. Solar energy should be
used to heat its hot plate and sea water should be
used to cool its cold plate. You will maximize the
output speed while maintaining reasonable boat
dimensions.
3. Energy Extraction from Mooring Lines of Boats
Batteries on boats are
generally charged via the
electricity grid when
they are docked.
Alternatively, small
wind turbines or
photovoltaic cells are
used to charge the boat
batteries. Actually, when a boat is moored, it sways back
and forth due to the waves. There is considerable amount of energy in this oscillatory motion.
In fact, springs are attached to mooring lines in order to absorb the excessive strain. The aim in

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CrbGLW6RwMc
49
this project is to design and construct a system that extracts some energy from this oscillatory
motion through the mooring lines.
4. Three-Degree-of-Freedom Tuned Mass Damper
A tuned mass damper (TMD) is a device consisting
of masses, springs and dampers that are attached
to a lightly damped system in order to reduce its
vibrations. The natural frequencies of a multi-
degree-of-freedom TMD is tuned to particular
resonance frequencies of the system. When the
system is excited at those frequencies, the TMD
suppresses the vibrations.
Your aim is to design and construct a three-
degree-of-freedom tuned mass damper to minimize
the vibrations of a planar structure. The natural
frequencies of the structure should be around 3-6
Hz. The structure should be excited by a variable
speed rotating eccentric mass.
5. Segway Personal Transporter
Segway is a two-wheeled, self-balancing personal transportation
vehicle. The vehicle is quite compact and offers good visibility. It
is suitable for short distance transportation.
Your aim is to design and construct a Segway (with or without a
handle bar). It will be capable of carrying a person up to 100 kg and
maintain the stability even for drastic movements. Do not forget,
safety comes first!

6. Hybrid Ankle-Foot Orthosis
An ankle-foot orthosis (AFO) is a type of exoskeleton that
surrounds the ankle and foot. AFOs are externally applied
and intended to control position and motion of the ankle,
compensate for weakness, or correct deformities.
The goal of this project is to design and build a hybrid ankle-
foot orthosis including both active (e.g., powered actuators)
and passive (e.g., spring) elements. Final prototype should
support the normal gait of an 80 kg person.
7. Citrus Fruit Press
When a manually operated citrus fruit press is used, the
pressing force requirement increases as we reach the
peal. Hence, large amount of forces are required to
extract all the juice. The common rack and pinion type
presses can apply large output forces with the expense of
rotating the arm couple of times for each extraction. The
linkage type presses provide high pressing forces towards
the end of the extraction, however, they are bulky.
Your aim in this project is to use noncircular gears and/or
curved racks to satisfy the nonlinear pressing
force requirement. The system should extract the
juice of small lemons as well as large grapefruits. A compact
system is to be designed and constructed in which the user
applies minimal effort in the extraction process.

8. Nutcracker
Nutcrackers are used to crack the
shells of variety of nuts. There a
numerous designs with certain
advantages and disadvantages.
Your aim in this project is to
design and construct a nutcracker
that can be used for walnuts and
hazelnuts. The designed system
should be compact and the
cracking effort should be
minimized. Moreover, kernel of
the nut shouldn’t be crushed.
9. Localized thermal management for biological systems
Localized thermal management focuses on a part of a larger system at special conditions such
as for biomedical therapy or sustaining comfort. Heating a tumor to higher temperatures while
keeping neighboring body parts below a certain treshold as in the case of photo-thermal cancer
therapy, or cooling muscles that are strained, subject to inflammation as in the case of cold
therapy. One other application can be locally sustaining comfort conditions for a human at a
specified location in a larger control volume without altering the conditions of the whole control
volume as a means of more energy efficient comforting.
In this project you are free to work on a specific localized thermal management application.
You must first come up with a conceptual design, and then you are expected to built a prototype
and test its performance.
10. Nano-composite heat exchanger
The plate heat exchanger that was designed in the previous semester
will be manufactured and tested. The corrosion resistant heat
exchanger will be manufactured from nano-composite material that
was investigated in the previous semester. An adequate
manufacturing process must be identified and components of the
heat exchanger will be manufactured and assembled. An
experimental setup will be designed to characterize the
performance of the heat exchanger and using this setup the
performance of the manufactured heat exchanger will be tested.
Effect of certain variables will be identified such as flow rate on
each side, number of plates etc.

11. Thermosyphon Electronics Cooling
System
12. Loop Heat Pipe Electronics Cooling System
A heat sink using a thermosyphon heat
spreader that was designed in the previous
semester will be manufactured and tested.
Following the identification of the proper
manufacturing method, the components
will be manufactured and the system will
be assembled. Then an experimental setup
will be designed, and using this setup the
thermosyphon heat sink will be tested.
Effect of several parameters on the cooling
performance will be identified such as the
working fluid's fill charge, thermal design
power, fan power through controlled
experiments.
The cooling system designed in the previous
semester based on a loop heat pipe will be
manufactured and tested. Following the
identification of the manufacturing method, the
components will be manufactured and
assembled. Then an experimental setup will be
designed, and using this setup the thermal
performance of the loop heat pipe cooling
system will be tested. Effect of several
parameters on the cooling performance will be
identified such as the working fluid's fill
charge, thermal design power, fan power and
boiling surface relying on controlled
experiments.

A parabolic through direct absorption solar
collector was designed in the previous
semester. First, proper manufacturing
process will be identified, and the system
components will be manufactured. The
manufactured components will then be
assembled. After identification of the
adequate testing method, the system will be
tested. Effect of several variables on the
performance will be identified such as
nanofluid type, particle concentration and
flow rate.
14. Direct Absorption Solar Heat Pipe
The feasibility of direct absorption
solar heat pipe as a novel concept
will be investigated. The system
designed in the previous semester
will be prototyped and its operation
will be tested by the identified
testing methodology. Considering
that this is a feasibility study, the
performance of the system will be
compared to that of an alternative
system that is built based on surface
absorption solar heat pipe relying on
nanofluids as working fluids.

thermosyphon heat engine was designed in the earlier
semester. The objective of the system was identified as
generating electrical power while producing domestic
hot water from a defined waste heat source. This
semester, the proper manufacturing method will be
identified, the system components will be
manufactured and the system will be assembled. The
system performance will then be tested identifying
how much electrical power and hot water for domestic
use was produced.
16. Spray Generator Design for Evaporative Cooling

in the Kilyos Labs. The designed system will be
implemented in a wind tunnel so that controlled
experiments can be carried out and the
performance of the system will be tested. During
the tests you are expected to use PIV for
monitoring the water droplets flow and
evaporation. The results will be compared with the
results of CFD analysis.
17. Thermal Storage Unit Design for Concentrated Solar Power

ME 429 Project Topics -Fall 2016
Mechanical/Electromechanical Systems Projects
1. Self Bouncing Ball
There are various toys in the market that vibrate with a few
millimeter amplitude while emitting some sounds and light.
These toys are eye catchers especially for little kids or
animals.
Your aim is to design a self bouncing ball that can jump at
least 50 cm. It doesn't have to emit sounds or light. However,
all actuators, batteries and circuitry should be inside the ball.
It can be remote controlled. The diameter of the ball should
be less than 20 cm.
2. Continuously Variable Transmission Based Flywheel Energy Storage System
Flywheel energy storage systems work by accelerating a
flywheel (rotor) to a high speed and maintaining the energy in
the system as rotational kinetic energy. When energy is
extracted from the system, the flywheel's rotational speed is
decreased. Likewise, adding energy to the system results in an
increase in the speed of the flywheel.
Your aim is to design a flywheel energy storage system that is
to be used in a small vehicle such as an all terrain vehicle,
motorcycle or bicycle. The designed system should store the
kinetic energy while braking and release the stored energy to
accelerate the vehicle. To accelerate and decelerate the flywheel
smoothly, a continuously variable transmission should be
designed.

3. Compliant Displacement Amplification Mechanism
Compliant mechanisms are composed of flexible links and joints. Due to
the absence of conventional joints, there is no backlash and lubrication is
not needed. However, as these mechanisms move by flexing its elements,
it is hard to obtain large motions.
Your aim is to design a compliant displacement amplification
mechanism, in which the input displacement is maximized as much as
possible while the resonance frequency of the mechanism remains high.
These kinds of mechanisms are generally used to amplify the small
displacements produced by voice coils or piezoelectric actuators. The
designs in the literature should be investigated and a novel design should
be developed.
4. Mode Conversion Mechanism
There are various systems in which the energy in two different vibration modes is
exchanged between each other. Wilberforce pendulum is an example in which
purely rotational oscillation gradually alternate with axial oscillations. Another
system that can show mode conversion is a spring pendulum
in which there is gradual energy exchange between axial
oscillations and swinging motion.
The aim in this project is to investigate the different mode
conversion mechanisms in the literature and come up with a
new one. Alternatively, you can combine the different
features of the existing mode conversion mechanisms to
generate a complex mode conversion mechanism that
displays energy exchange in between three or more
vibration modes.

5. Adjustable Vibration Absorber
Vibration absorbers are generally composed of
springs and masses, and they are used to eliminate
excitations which correspond to their resonance
frequency. In general, resonance (natural)
frequency of these systems are fixed, hence they can
only eliminate a single frequency.
Your aim is to design a vibration absorber with
adjustable natural frequency. The adjustment
mechanism should be operated with minimal effort.
The natural frequency of the absorber should be
changed between 3 Hz and 20 Hz. The resonating
mass should be at least 50 grams.
6. Small Scale Universal Testing Machine
Universal testing machines are used to measure the
force-displacement characteristics of specimens in
tension, compression or bending. Generally, these
machines have high load capacities and high cost.
There are also some small scale machines that can be
built without using a large budget.
The aim in this project is to design a low cost but
accurate universal testing machine. The load capacity
should be at least 400 N. Moreover, force and
displacement accuracies should be at least 1 N and 0.1
mm, respectively. The machine should record the
force-displacement data during a measurement and display it on a mobile phone
or a computer.

7. Powertrain and Steering Design for BUALERT Competition Vehicle
An electric powered prototype vehicle is designed
by the Boğaziçi University Alternative Energy
Racing Team (BUALERT) for competition
purposes. In order to have a better vehicle, its
powertrain and steering system should be
improved. Currently, a 1 kW electric hub motor is
driving the rear wheel. For the powertrain,
efficiency and reliability should be increased
whereas weight and size should be decreased. As
this is an electric vehicle, the control unit can be
redesigned to improve electrical efficiency. For
size and weight reduction, the rear frame of the
vehicle that carries the powertrain should be redesigned. Moreover, the current steering system should also
be improved for better handling, ergonomics and weight reduction.
8. Spring-Mass Hopper
Spring-mass hopper (also known as the Spring Loaded Inverted Pendulum, SLIP)
is a dynamic model to analyze and estimate human and animal locomotion. This
model consists of a point mass 𝑚 attached to a massless spring with spring constant
k and rest length l0.
Main control parameters in the SLIP model are the touchdown leg angle θtd and the
amount of change in the total mechanical energy ΔE. Many researchers develop
some control strategies to change mechanical energy: leg stiffness control, leg
length control, torque actuated control, linear actuated control, deadbeat control,
neural network control and so on. They aim to maintain desired apex height,
forward speed, body orientation, etc., at certain phases of running cycle.
Despite a significant amount of literature regarding the
running robots, fast and precise control remains quite
challenging problem. The purpose of this project is to
design a running robot model and develop a new
controller which can be applicable to this design. The
leg length should be between 0.2 - 0.3 m and the robot should reach 0.3 - 0.4
m apex height and 1 m/s vertical speed. The robot body mass shouldn’t be
more than 4 kg.

9. Low-cost Haptic Interface
A haptic interface is a motorized and
instrumented device that allows a human
user to touch virtual objects. Haptic
interfaces provide an attractive way for
engineering students to learn
electromechanical systems, dynamics and
controls.
Motivated by these considerations, the aim
of this project is to design and develop a
simple 1 or 2-DOF haptic interface kit that
students can assemble, model, connect to a
computer, implement a controller and use for
interacting in a physical way with computer
simulations of dynamic systems. The
developed kit will be used either at ME304
or ME331.
10. Sensory Feedback System for a Prosthetic Hand
Lack of the sense of touch is the
fundamental problem of today's robotic
prostheses. Missing proprioceptive
feedback, which is the sense of relative
position of neighboring parts of the body,
has caused upper-limb robotic prostheses to
lose their popularity among users.
The aim of this project is to design and
develop a sensory-feedback device
displaying orientation of a prosthetic hand.
The students will design a 3-DOF device
that is providing skin stretch (shear
feedback) on the forearm for the wrist
movements of a prosthetic hand (extension-
flexion, radial-ulnar deviation, and
pronation-supination).

11. Loop Heat Pipe Electronics Cooling System
Heat pipes are cyclic phase change devices to transfer heat over a
significantly small tempeature differences effectively that operates
without the aid of a pump or any other turbo machinery. The energy
transferred to working fluid in the liquid phase leads to vaporization in
the evaporator. This increases local vapor pressure in the evaporator
that drives the vapor to the condenser where energy is removed and the
working fluid condensates. Loop heat pipes are specific type of heat
pipes, where separate lines are used for vapor and liquid phases to
improve the performance of the system.
In this project you are expected to design, manufacture and test a loop
heat pipe cooling system for electronics thermal management. The
designed system must be modular so that you can try different
geometries, technologies for boiling and condensation enhancement,
working fluids and maximize or optimize the performance.
12. Thermoelectric integrated heat sink with phase change spreader
The semiconductor industry is committed
to follow Moore’s law to meet the demand
for high performance computing. As the
dissipated power density increases due to
the increasing number of transistors,
cooling becomes a significant problem and
high performance cooling technologies are
sought especially for high performance
systems. Thermoelectric coolers (TEC)
integrated to phase change spreaders are
considered as one of the high performance alternatives that can handle the
higher heating loads.
In this project, TEC integrated heat sinks with passive phase
change heat spreading technology will be designed. The
designed system will be manufactured and tested for estimating
its performance for different COP values.

13. Direct Absorption Solar Heat Pipe
Aside from their applications in thermal management,
heat pipes are devices that are used for solar energy
utilization. Solar heat pipes are solar collectors that
operates based on the principles of heat pipe (see
definition in the earlier projects). The use of solar heat
pipe collectors are gaining popularity especially in
Europe due to their advantages. Next generation solar
heat pipes rely on improved working fluids such as
nanofluids for improved performance. There are
different approaches such as using nanofluids as a
working fluid, or using a direct absorption system,
where the heat is directly transferred to an opaque fluid
without heating an intermediate surface.
In this project next generation solar heat pipe systems
will be investigated. You are expected to explore these
systems, design a system for improved performance, manufacture a prototype and test your prototype. The
systems performance is compared to that of a conventional system where the working fluid is water.
14. Phase Change Heat Transfer Test Setup
Phase change (boiling/condensation) systems are used in many
applications such as vapor compression refrigeration,
electronics cooling, or energy conversion systems. It is desired
to characterize the phase change behavior in order to design
and optimize systems such as heat pipe in a laptop computer,
vapor chamber of a server, evaporator or condenser of a power
plant, or a refrigerator. Experimental investigations are
considered as the major means of understanding the
boiling/condensation behavior of different fluids in
conjunction with different surfaces used to enhance the heat
transfer due to governing complex physical phenomena. In this project, a modular test setup will be
designed where boiling and condensation performance of various fluids, such as hBN nanofluids in
conjunction with different surfaces can be characterized and visualized. The surfaces considered might
have different levels of roughness, micro-structures or
special coatings applied.
62
15. Thermal interface material conductivity measurement
When two solids are put in contact, the roughness on each surface will lead to a
thermal resistance. Thermal contact resistances become extremely important for
high heat flux applications over a small surface area such as in the case of
electronics cooling applications. Therefore, thermal interface materials are used to
reduce this resistance. Thermal interface materials are usually made up of
polymeric materials enriched with metallic particles to increase their bulk thermal
conductivity. Once these materials are applied, majority of the gaps can be filled.
However, some voids still exist between the surfaces and the
thermal interface material that is a function. Determining the
bulk thermal conductivity and the contact resistance due these voids between the
interface material and the surfaces can only be done experimentally.
In this project, it is required to design and manufacture a test setup to measure the
thermal interface material bulk thermal conductivity and the resulting contact
resistance. The thermal interface material considered has sub-millimeter thickness,
in the order of micrometers. Reference materials are to be tested to validate the device
and the measurement capability of the device is to be determined.
16. Composite Phase Change Panels for Household Refrigators
Refrigerators are among the most widely used household appliances and they
contribute to a considerable portion of the total energy consumption of households.
Using phase change materials (PCMs) in refrigeration systems reduces temperature
fluctuations and enhances system performance. In this project shape stabilized panels
from phase changing materials are going to be investigated so that these panels can
be used in refrigerators to improve the performance of the appliances. Systems
considering different phase changing materials are going to be designed to be used at
the evaporator, compartment and condenser for both cooler and freezer
compartments.
In this project, you are expected to design such a panel, manufacture a prototype and
test its performance.
63
17. Thermal characterization of construction materials
Energy efficiency in buildings are gaining more
attention and there is a growing interest on energy
conscious buildings. Therefore, there is a growing
interest in design and production of energy efficient
construction materials. Although, theoretical models
can be used to predict the thermal behavior of such
materials, existence of imperfect thermal interfaces in
these structures introduce a
significant amount of
uncertainty to these predictions
necessitating experimental data
to calibrate and validate these
models.
In this project, a measurement device that can test the thermal behavior of
construction materials will be designed and manufactured. While the samples
tested are in the order of centimeters, the accuracy of the test device will be
validated by testing properties of various reference materials to outline its
measurement capability.
18. Nanofluids for engine thermal management
Automotive industry has been focusing on increasing engine
performance and improving vehicle fuel efficiency. In order to
achieve this goal, the engine block’s size can be reduced to
minimize the weight of the vehicle. Similarly, minimizing the size
and weight of the radiator is also desired. However, shrinking sizes
leads to an increase in the heat density that needs to be removed
from the engine, which makes
the engine thermal
management a more
challenging problem. Better
cooling solutions are desired and studies have demonstrated that use of
nano-fluids for internal combustion engine thermal management could
improve engine cooling performance to some extent.
In this project, the objective is to experimentally demonstrate the effect
of using hBN nano-fluids as coolant. First, an experimental system is
to be designed, then the designed test setup is to be manufactured and
performance tests must be carried out using the test setup.
64
19. Energy utilization from vehicle exhaust
Besides utilizing alternative energy sources, utilizing
the energy lost in the existing systems and
infrastructure and minimizing the energy use in
existing systems is a very important task. Majority of
the current vehicles in use today rely on internal
combustion engines (ICE) that discharge hot
combustion products to the environment. One way of
utilizing the thermal energy stored in hot exhaust gases
of a passenger vehicle is by using thermoelectric
generators.
In this project, a regeneration system must be designed
to demonstrate the feasibility of the concept. The
designed system must operate under a typical ICE
vehicle operating conditions and should be able to produce electrical power from the exhaust line. The
designed regeneration system must be manufactured and tested considering typical boundary conditions.
