Dear parents and families,
Welcome to Family Weekend! Today, you will have a variety of opportunities to talk to
Yale-NUS students, faculty, and staff and learn about the many ways that we live, learn, and work together within the Yale-NUS community. Our goals for today’s various activities are for you to build connections with Yale-NUS
College faculty and staff, to experience life as a student, and to get to know other parents
and Yale-NUS students. This year, we have condensed the Family Weekend into a single
day’s worth of programming, and we have also introduced concurrently running progammes, so you
can pick the activities that interest you the most! You’ll have the opportunity to sit in on sample lectures by faculty members (yes, you can take notes) and, if you choose to, hangout just like a student; mix and mingle with staff members and faculty working in the administration and residential colleges; enjoy student performances or learn about our unique Week 7 experience; take a campus tour while sipping a coffee prepared at the student-run Brewhouse. And don’t forget to join us for dinner at the barbecue! I look forward to meeting all of you, and please do enjoy your time at Yale-NUS College on this wonderful day for parents, family, and students.

LECTURES LECTURES
This sample lecture, previously given to freshmen in their second semester of the Literature and Humanities Common Curriculum, explores the writings of Lu Xun (1881-1936), known as the “father” of modern Chinese literature. We will learn about what it is that made Lu Xun so concerned about the “Chinese” national character, his relentless self-critique, and his views on women.

Transnational airborne particulate pollution from forest and peat fires makes at least an annual appearance
in the Singapore skies, but why is it that we can see it unlike our very own toxic emissions? Can
we tell just by looking out of the window that our air is unhealthy to breathe? And what are local scientists and engineers doing to protect us?
Join Prof. Stan in exploring these and other interdisciplinary scientific questions surrounding the haze. There will be light!

MAKING DREAMS COME TRUESince young, Jan-Michal Ong Jun (Class of 2020) has been a lover of history and literature. Rummaging through books and losing himself in creativity and writing gave him the opportunity to explore and travel to worlds beyond his imagination. Now a final-year History major focusing on the intersecting traditions of European literature and history, Michal describes Yale-NUS as an intellectually and emotionally transformative experience. He firmly believes that the breadth and rigour of its curriculum has nurtured his intellect and empowered him to boldly pursue his niche interest locally in a relatively untrodden field that would otherwise have been difficult to pursue meaningfully.
Michal has often ruminated on how different life would have been if not for the financial freedom provided by the study awards that he received at Yale-NUS. Brought up in a close-knit family by loving deaf parents who worked hard to make ends meet, being awarded the Georgette Chen Study Award during his sophomore and junior years as well as the Saw Swee Hock Study Award for his final year proved to be liberating for him and his family. Relieved of crippling financial anxieties, Michal was also able to embark on a fulfilling semester abroad at Yale University in his junior year and spend his summer of 2017 studying French and French history at Sciences Po.
This financial freedom has also extended beyond academics. Unburdened by financial worries, Michal is an active member of the Yale-NUS community, participating in the Gospel Choir, Christian Fellowship and the Literary Collective. He also gives back to the community as a peer tutor at the Writers’ Centre.
Private philanthropic support has been instrumental in providing Yale-NUS College with the resources to offer
our students a world-class education that draws from the best of East and West. We invite you
to partner with us by joining us in building our culture of giving. Making a gift to the Yale-NUS
College Parents’ Fund will help support the College’s highest priorities, including financial
aid and various other academic and student programmes.

While he is looking towards graduation and the possibility of postgraduate studies, Michal says that he is not done learning and studying about the world. For him, Yale-NUS is but that essential step into the greater world.
