EKA Renewal 2014 REMINDER: Explore Knowledge Academy goes before the Clark County School District Board of Trustees to ask for our charter to be renewed on Thursday, January 9th. This will be our second renewal since the school began in 2002. Every six years, we must go through this process and it is that time again. Administration has completed all the paperwork and now we need to show CCSD that we are supported by our parents, students and community. We are asking that you join us at the trustee meeting on Thursday, January 9th, at 4:00 pm. The meeting is at CCSD’s Main Office at the EDWARD A. GREER EDUCATION CENTER, BOARD ROOM 2832 E. FLAMINGO ROAD, LAS VEGAS, NV 89121. Please join us for this exciting milestone.
Wholesome Tummies Café
The Wholesome Tummies menu for January is attached at the end of the newsletter. To order WT Café visit www.wtcafe.com. Order a month in advance or as late as 8am the same morning. Entrees are pre-ordered online and delivered in time for lunch. Please place your hot lunch orders by January 4th to receive confirmation for the start of our second semester.
The Common Core State Standards Initiative is an education initiative in the United States that
details what K-12 students should know in English and math at the end of each grade. Over the next few newsletters, EKA will be including some questions similar to those that will be on future tests. Please refer to the last pages of this newsletter for sample questions.
EKA would like to wish all of our families Happy Holidays
& Happy New Year!
Hour of Code December 9 – 15th was Computer Science Education Week. Explore Knowledge Academy is proud to say that our
students joined 5 million students in 167 countries participating in an Hour of Code! Students watched short messages
by President Obama and Mark Zuckerberg before learning the basics of computer coding. Computer science is not a
course typically taught to K – 12th grade students, yet the market for employment in this field is growing. Computer
science develops students’ computational and critical thinking skills and shows them how to create, not simply use,
new technologies. This fundamental knowledge is needed to prepare students for the 21st century, regardless of their
ultimate field of study or occupation. Through www.code.org tutorials, EKA students were
able to learn about coding and the response was amazing! Students were challenged to
complete code for games such as Plants v. Zombies and Angry Birds. Parents reported that
students went home and continued working through the tutorials at home after school. One
of our seniors is now changing his intended college major to computer science after this
experience. The tutorials are free and can be accessed through the site listed above. EKA is
proud to be part of this world wide week of computer science education and looks forward
to enhancing our students’ computer science knowledge in the future.
from the Registrar Re‐enrollment packets will be sent home with your child on Tuesday, January 7th. To ensure placement for the 2014‐2015 school year, please return the completed packet to the front office no later than January 24th. Incomplete packets will be returned and will not hold a student’s spot for the 2014‐2015 school year. Open enrollment for new students for the 2014‐2015 school year will begin on Monday, January 27th. Upcoming orientation dates for new students interested in attending EKA include: January 14th and 21st February 7 and 25th March 11th and 28th April 22nd May 2nd and 13t June 6th. Please remember when picking your student up early from school, the absence may be considered unexcused. (Secondary ‐ If a student misses 30 minutes or more of any class they are considered absent.) Students with 3 or more unexcused absences will receive a truancy letter in the mail. Parents have 3 days upon the students return to turn in an absence note. If a note is not received in 3 days, the absence is considered unexcused. If you plan on your student being absent, please fill out a pre‐arranged absence form. Students are allowed 10 approved pre‐arranged absences (1 day = 1.3 EKA days.) Also, please remember we DO NOT release students after 2:45 (Elementary) and 3:20 (Secondary.) If students must schedule an appointment, please try to schedule on Mondays or later in the day.
Students can earn the chance to win $15 over Winter Break! The student who earns the most Blue Ribbons (combination of English and Math) on STUDY ISLAND from Dec. 21 to Jan. 5 will win a $15 Target gift card. Second place earns a $10 gift card while third place gets $5. You can use your normal login and password at www.studyisland.com. There will be one set of winners from the Elementary Campus and one set from the Secondary Campus

Happy Holidays to all of our EKA friends and families, The semester is over and Winter break is here. Semester report cards will be collated the first week advisors return in January and should be mailed by January 17th. We hope to have updated Discovery score sheets included with the report card mailings. School staff is working diligently to prepare for second semester enrollment, as well as enrollment and re-enrollment (existing students) for the 2014 – 2015 school year. Please see our website for additional information on new student orientations and enrollment dates. If you know of someone that could benefit from a project based technology infused learning environment, please let them know about EKA!
As we look to 2014, students will begin preparing for standardized testing. We have included some sample problems for you to review so that you can understand what the new increase in Common Core State Standards (CCSS) means to students having to take these exams. We know this transition year has been difficult for everyone, but we feel that each day our students learn more and are better equipped for these tests than the day before. We will continue to mentor your students and assist them in learning the skills necessary to be successful on these mandated tests. You can also go to the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium at http://www.smarterbalanced.org/ for more information on these upcoming exams. This year our 5th grade students are part of the pilot testing in mathematics, and we have been told that the Criterion Reference Tests (CRTs) will have a CCSS portion to them. While Nevada works to meet the requirements of the Nevada Waiver to the No Child Left Behind waiver, there will be some changes to the tests your children have to take. Please be patient as we try to navigate through these changing times. We will keep you informed as best we can.
Finally, I want to remind everyone that on January 9th, EKA goes before the Clark County School District Board of Trustees to renew our charter. We would love to have as many EKA supporters in attendance as possible. Hope to see you there.
Sincerely,
Abbe Mattson Superintendent
EKA Elementary Happenings EKA Families, As we are approaching the end of the first semester of the 2013-2014 school year, we want to thank you for your continued support to our school and our academic program. Most advisories are finishing up their last round of projects before going on Winter Break. Students are increasingly becoming more independent in completing their projects by pulling out content that is important to them from the standards their advisors are assigning. The standards are becoming more meaningful as the students extract content by generating questions that are significant to them. This fall, advisors have also fully taken on the task of teaching the new Common Core State Standards (CCSS). We have done this through modifications to our existing Saxon Math program and the full implementation of Reading Wonders. Our staff recognizes that this transition is not an easy one. In some instances, students are being taught math and reading that is on a level that is a year or more beyond what has ever been taught at their grade level. Initially, there was a level of discomfort for students, and yes, even parents. Some of the uneasiness was a result of longer and more complex reading passages and some was from scores earned on weekly reading assessments. Our initial goal in giving the weekly Reading Wonders Common Core assessments was to see a continuum of growth throughout the school year; which in turn would allow advisors and parents to see the students’ progress in meeting the rigor of the standards. Only halfway through the year, we are exceptionally pleased to see our students responding. Students who initially were frustrated by the long, nonfiction passages are now tackling those head on with the strategies taught by advisors. Advisors regularly meet with students to set goals for weekly assessments. As a result of the rigor of the Reading Wonders program and the regular homework help students are receiving from families, we are seeing growth! Students are excited to see the results of their hard work. The other component of our state’s implementation of the new CCSS is a change in the yearly assessments our students will be taking. The examinations students in Nevada will be taking are part of the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC). Some 3rd – 5th students will be participating in a pilot SBAC assessment and some students will be administered the CRT test with additional CCSS components. Given that there will be new assessments beginning in the spring, we want to give our parents an opportunity to start seeing some of the sample types of questions your children will be asked to solve. Families are also encouraged to go to smarterbalanced.org for more information. Sincerely, Dawn Gustafson Elementary Principal
The Kindergarten and 1st grade advisories performed "A Bear-y Merry Holiday" song for the parents. Each first grade advisory performed their own winter song and kindergarten closed the show with the Winter Pokey.
PTSA provided juice and cookies for the families after the show! We had a fantastic turn out and parents really enjoyed it!!

Discovery #2 Tests Middle school students recently completed the second of four rounds of the Discovery Education English and Math exams. Advisors use the results of these exams to analyze growth and target specific standards in their instruction. Growth reports should be sent home in January with your child’s semester report card. Overall EKA students showed average or above average growth . Congratulations to the following students who showed above average growth compared to the first exams in September:

Leadership 6 EKA sixth graders completed their Leadership 6 class this week with Mr. Synold. Along with studying law and government, students had several guest speakers including: Henderson City Council Woman Schroeder, Judge Weiss, Metro Officer Delap and District Attorney Bawa (pictured). On December 4 and 5, students took a field trip downtown to experience the Regional Justice Building and Federal Courthouse. Students met several judges and marshals, watched court cases, and visited the Nevada Supreme Court. Leadership 6 provided background knowledge for the sixth graders biography project that they completed in their advisory. It was a memorable semester of learning!

Student Email 2nd—12th grade students can access their email at home through the resource section on our website. Click on the link that says, “EKA Email.” Students will be given their email addresses at the start of the school year. Emergency Contact Information If you have recently changed your contact information (email or phone numbers, specifically) please be sure to notify the front office and change them on your student’s emergency cards. Medication Please remember the Health Office requires proper documentation before your student can receive any medication at school. All medication must be given to the Health Office. Lunch Please send your child’s lunch with the needed utensils. We cannot provide them. Also, please remember to label your child’s belongings. This includes lunch boxes and lunch bags. This will prevent your student’s lunch from getting mixed up with someone else’s. Please remember to drop lunches off to the front office no later 11:00. Early Pick-up Parents who need to have their children picked up from school early by a person other than the child’s legal guardian need to send in an email or fax with picture ID stating the name of that individual. We need something IN WRITING or the student will not be released. Missed School Work Policy When your child is absent, please be sure to contact their advisor to request any missed assignments. All EKA advisors can be reached via email through our website. Parents are responsible for contacting the advisors. Also, please check back with the advisor when coming in to collect missing work to make sure it has been brought to the front office.
Parent Reminders
PTSA: Why join the EKA PTSA? Research studies show that kids do better when parents get involved. PTSA’s keep parents informed. Involved parents can understand the challenges schools face and become part of the solution. Strong schools mean stronger communities. Thank you to everyone who came out to support the EKA Holiday Bazaar.
Wishing everyone a safe and restful holiday break! Happy 2014
