History of Choc-OlaChoc-Ola is a chocolate beverage that was formulated in 1944by a former restaurant and ice-cream store entrepreneur fromPennsylvania named Harry Normington, Sr.

In 1943, Harry moved to Indiana and shortly thereafterformulated the Choc-Ola recipe and manufacturingprocess. Choc-Ola was originally manufactured on thesouth side of Indianapolis near Beech Grove, INbeginning in around 1944. It was distributed to all ofIndiana and the bordering areas and major populationcenters of all adjacent states.

The chocolate drink gained enormous popularitythrough the 50's, 60's and 70's. In 1977, at the heightof its success, it was acquired by Moxie Industries.

In 1985, Moxie sold it to The Chocolate Group, whowas at the time, the parent company of Yoo-Hoo.A short time later, Choc-Ola's Indianapolis plant wasclosed and the entire bottling operation was relocatedto Carlstadt, NJ - which was the location of the plantthey were bottling Yoo-Hoo. Also, at about that sametime, they stopped distributing Choc-Ola to Indianapolis; althoughit could still be obtained in some areas close to Indy such asFort Wayne and Anderson.

In the early 2000's, Mott's acquired Choc-Olawhen it purchased Yoo-Hoo. For unknown reasons,in around 2003 or so, manufacturing & distribution ofChoc-Ola was completely stopped.

The Retro-Brand ReturnsChoc-Ola has been gone from Indianapolis for over 25 years...but nowits back!

Choc-Ola is being re-introduced into the marketplace by Dan Iaria,a life-time native of Indianapolis and owner of the Rock-Cola Cafe.Dan felt that Choc-Ola had been gone for long enough. So, in 2009,he embarked on a mission to revive a tradition that has beenlong-missed.

And, with some uncanny coincidences, a few lucky breaks, a year'sworth of research and an unshakable belief he could pull this off,he has finally started to see it all come together.

The Rock Cola Cafe, with all its retro ambiance and local appeal,seemed to be the perfect spot to relaunch a throw-back drink thatwas originally from Indianapolis.

In fact, the Rock Cola Cafe is less than 3 miles north-east of the originalChoc-Ola bottling plant...not to mention the odd coincidence thatRock Cola and Choc-Ola rhyme...almost like they were meant tobe together.

Future PlansChoc-Ola is starting to become available in many smallerretailers...such as convenient stores, fuel stops &mom-n-pop restaurants. We are currently in the earlystages of negotiating with large regional beveragedistributors to allow for a quick return to the marketplace.
