One of the original 'British invasion' bands of the mid -sixties, The Kinks have hovered just outside the mainstream since, remaining a vital and influential force in pop music. Word Of Mouth, the band's current album, is distributed in Canada by RCA. Fronted by vocalist and songwriter Ray Davies and his brother Dave on guitar, The Kinks first appeared on the scene with a version of Little Richard's Long Tall Sally. Ray Davies has said he was influenced by the American music played on Radio Luxembourg when he was in his teens - sem- inal artists such as Chuck Berry and Eddie Ray Davies of The Kinks Cochran. The preceding, as well as Fats Domino, Elvis, and most of the Motown canon inspired a generation of young British musicians including The Rolling Stones, The Who, and even The Beatles. If it was American R&B and rock and roll that these youths cut their teeth on, it was a British/American pop hybrid that ma- terialized in The Kinks first hit, You Really Got Me. Released in 1964, the song was distinctive and unmistakable with Davies' braying vocal, brother Dave's brittle, ener- getic guitar playing, and all the production value of a pop can. Other hits followed - Tired Of Waiting For You, A Well Respected Man, Dedicated Follower Of Fashion - that demonstrated Davies' knack for penning simple, but often socially relevant lyrics. The Kinks at this time consisted of Ray Davies (lead vocal, guitar), Dave Davies (lead guitar, vocals), Peter Quaife (bass), and Mick Avory (drums). Following release of the Face To Face, Something Else, and Village Green Preser- vation Society LPs, The Kinks left the Reprise label for RCA. The RCA output includes Muswell Hillbillies, Everybody's In Showbiz, Preservation, and Schoolboys In Disgrace. Davies' writing had progressed from 3 -min, encapsulations of teen angst and pointed social commentary to lengthier, more textured efforts involving theatrics, in-depth production, and detailed story lines. With a move to Arista in 1977, The Kinks returned to the shorter songs and more contained lyrics of their earlier days. Sleepwalker, the first Arista LP, was something of a commercial hit and went Top 20 in Canada. 1978's Misfits, which yielded AOR play in the form of Rock 'N' Roll Fantasy, was key in that it dealt in a pop format with subjects long present in Ray Davies' songwriting: estrangement, escape, and fantasy. Low Budget, the next LP, was the first Kinks studio effort recorded in the U.S. The LP's success compelled the ban'd - now consisting of Davies, Davies, Avory, bassist Jim Rodford, and keyboardist Ian Gibbons - to hit the road. The result was a 2 -record set entitled One For The Road. This live LP . added no special dimension to their material, but served proper notice that the band was - and still is - first and foremost a live act. Perhaps most welcome about this particular live set was Dave Davies' fero- cious treatment of songs such as Lola, Low Budget, and You Really Got Me. By the early '80s; Ray Davies' repu- tation as pop craftsman had found its way to a newer generation of artists. His ma- terial was covered by such artists as The Pretenders, The Knack, and The Romantics. Give The People What They Want, and State Of Confusion (1983) followed the live LP, the latter yielding Come Dancing, the band's first major chart hit in 20 years. With the release of Word Of Mouth, it was announced that drummer Mick Avory - a founding member - has quit the band, to be replaced by Bob Henrit. Henrit and bassist Rodford played together at one time in Argent. While Word Of Mouth may not possess the material with the CHR wallop of Come Dancing, or Lola, the LP yet again demon- strates the durability, potency, and peren- nial appeal not only of Ray Davies' talent but of that 22-yr.-old band of rock gypsies known as The Kinks. - KCW

Jagger's first solo LP slated for mid -February

CBS has slated a mid -February release for She's The Boss, the long-awaited first solo

album from Mick Jagger. The album represents the first LP under

the Rolling Stones' signing with CBS, and also the first solo album from Jagger in the over 20 -year history of the legendary Brit-

Underground and some of it sounds like Shalamar. There's a bit of very different

ingredients in there." The Moyet session was produced by

Tony Swain and Steve Jolley. Sade (pronounced SHAWDEY) has al-

ready gained a foothold in the Canadian market, with Hang On To Your Love,

taken as the first single from her Diamond Life album. The single entered the RPM Top 100 Singles chart at No. 73 with a bullet (Jan 19/85). Videos of this track, plus

Smooth Operator, and How Am I Gonna Make A Living, will be made available.

P.O.P. assists include custom-made four- colour posters, and header cards. Also avail-

able are Sade message pads and a four-colour bio. A Diamond contest is also in the works, and a possible promo visit by the artist.

There has been an increase in popularity for female dance artists. Peter Budge, Man-

ager Pop Product for CBS Records Canada, says "The popularity of female artists has

always been there. CHR radio is opening up up and they (female vocalists) are getting

a break. Radio is opening up in general. If it's a good song, it's a good song."

Budge also pointed out the increase in club activity with regard to dance -oriented

music, as well as record distributors and rackers who are specializing in this type

of product.

Gabriel's band guests on Gowan's new LP CBS Records Canada has kicked off an

extensive national promotion in support of Gowan's new LP, Strange Animal.

The LP, slated for a Feb. 4 release, is the first from the singer/songwriter/key-

boardist in almost two years and was produced by David Tickle, who also work-

ed Platinum Blonde's successful debut LP.

Guesting on the album, produced at Startling Sounds Studios in England, were members of Peter Gabriel's band, drummer

Jerry Marotta, bassist Tony Levin, and guitarist David Rhodes. Also giving an

assist was guitarist Chris Jarrett. Housed in a colourful gatefold jacket

the album includes nine tracks, all Gowan originals. The latter also handled keyboards

on the session. A Criminal Mind has been taken as

the first single, released as a 7" in a picture sleeve, and as a 12" with a custom jacket.

The latter contains 3 versions of the single, an edited version, the LP track, plus a

video mix. A video shoot of the single was done by

Champaigne Pictures, directed by Rob Quartly and produced by Mike Rosen,

which utilized animation. The video has been described as the company's (CBS) most

adventurous project to date, and the first time they've used animation in a video.

A Canadian tour is now being pencilled in with a start-up date expected about the

end of March.

11'41 I 11-1A1---1

The beginning looked good ... but!!The sell -through for one very large opera-tion apparently wasn't enough. A coupleof locations were unceremoniously closed, and now there are deals and bartering goingon. You can guess who won't get hurt . .

. . the bank, of course. What's the oldexpression "forewarned is forearmed". Itwill take one brave soul to introduce abetter system for the protection of thesuppliers. This loss could surpass $5 million.

It just . . disappeared!!!Somebody asked me just recently if I knewwhat happened to the Panasonic All StarAward? Just asking.

Cassettes versus LPsThe year end saw a lot of cassettes beingsold as the result of incentives which will nodoubt decrease the usually devastating"returns" season. One major made a pointof offering lower incentives on I:Ps, whichwill most certainly affect their return situ-ation. Checking a few stores last week Inoticed some hit product was only beingheavily stocked in cassette form, while

. the prophets of doom, the messengers of mediocrity, will be overwhelmed by the new generation of competent, creative, confident artisans and by all those of precedinggenerations who have already demonstrated their freshnessof mind, their talent and their capacity for inspired leader-ship." - Pierre Iuneau i s' V

LP bins were really looking hungry. Itwas hard to believe that top -of -the -chartacts were being stocked in ones and twos. One retailer told me that he's selling cas-settes, three to one, over LPs, so naturallyhe's stocking accordingly. Just as a footnoteI checked with a couple of majors and theyboth agree that the split is about 60/40 forcassettes.

Company on the move 9

It's about time! Many were speculatingabout when they would move, and nowthe rumours are that they are about tomove . . . right along, and get into themainstream (EC: That's a clue!). Didn't Ipredict this in one of my columns just acouple of months ago?

A little time solves everything!!!Well, the critics of the Compact Disc, mayhave been a little presumptuous in theirpredictions of the early demise of thismusic form. Given a little time, which ithas had, and a reduction in the hardware, which was the major stumbling block, andwe've got the makings of what could bea major benefit to the industry. PolyGram'sBob Ansell tells me that even this early inthe new year, the projections look excel-lent. PolyGram has 900 CD items in theircatalogue, and that covers pop and classics. Now, if they can get the cost of the discdown to a reasonable price . . .. and what'sa reasonable price . . . ?

My son the ... . whatever he does!!!What do the following have in common?Touch, New Music, and Cheap Thrill? NOW!what do these have in common? Rainbow,MCQ, Grapevine, Record Week? The answerwill appear in next week's column. (EC: Ohgood! A trivial pursuit. Very trivial!)

I hear rumours!!!Could it be that with the success of a coupleof Cancon artists, one of major proportions, someone very close to someone very closeto the top honcho, has been asking 'how -cum - . . that with all this press hysteriaover Cancon acts (EC: which is very rareindeed . . . I must say) and with the 30%Cancon legislation, that sales of domesticproduct only amounts to 5%. Could it bethat the independent label people actuallyhave an ally in this Tory government??

Linda's Calendar - another masterpiece!Linda McCartney sent me her 1985 Calen-dar and' , like previous issues, this one isanother treasure. The photos are excep-tional, in both size (16X23) and in colourtones, and include some of her friends, late and present, including Jimi Hendrix(1967), Janis Joplin (1966), George Harri-son (1969), The Who's Pete Townshend(1967). Jim Morrison of The Doors (1967),and, of course, hubby Paul, Ringo Starrand the late John Lennon, all taken in1969. The Music Therapy Calendar (LindaMcCartney's Music Makers) was producedby MPL Communications for the Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy Centre, whichsupplies aid to handicapped children inthe U.K. Those intereted in having theirown calendar should direct their enquiriesto MPL Communications, 39 West 54thStreet, New York, N.Y. 10019. By the

way, Linda has been sending her calendarto me over the years, along with samplesof her photography, and I've become quitea fan. Her camera work captures very rarelyseen facial expressions by these artists.

Radio is changingSome random thoughts on radio. Prettysoon you'll be hearing that radio listenersare dropping off (EC: I notice this everyday in the obituary columns!!). You will al-so notice that CHR radio is taking a beatingin some areas. The sound of AOR is gettingsofter and softer, and music is becomingvery fragmented with the 16 to 20 agegroup, who are really choosing their musicand following it with greater reverence thanin years gone by. This finding, by the way, comes from my own research, and not fromsome hack programming expert. Will we,someday, have a heavy metal format on thedial, just down from the mod sounds orskins, poseurs, rockers, soul boys, dreads,or funk formats? Now, there is country -rock and cow -punk . . . and what else?Young people are really adamant abouttheir music, and it affects radio and recordsales more and more every day. If music bethe food of love, what would you play in afast food outlet?

Gowan will go .. . this time!!!I've long held the belief that Larry Gowanwas going to be a monster recording act, butunfortunately, not many shared my view.Well . . . . he's back and this time he has theadded promotional vehicle of a prettyastounding video. Gowan will break veryfast with his first single, A Criminal Mind, and I'm predicting that his Strange AnimalLP, set for release Feb. 4 . . . . will finallybe that monster. By the way, word hasleaked that Bernie DiMatteo had a greatdeal to do with the concept for Gowan'svideo. The video is unique in that it blendsanimation with the real thing and the resultis just incredible.

the food of love, what would you play in a fast food outlet?

Gowan will go . . .

this time!!! I've long held the belief that Larry Gowan

was going to be a monster recording act, but unfortunately, not many shared my view.

Well . . . .

he's back and this time he has the added promotional vehicle of a pretty

astounding video. Gowan will break very fast with his first single, A Criminal Mind, and I'm predicting that his Strange Animal LP, set for release Feb. 4

. . . . will finally

be that monster. By the way, word has leaked that Bernie DiMatteo had a great

deal to do with the concept for Gowan's video. The video is unique in that it blends

animation with the real thing and the result is just incredible.

GOING TO 11/11DENI?

We'll take care of your travel

arrangements, the way we look after so many

radio, record & motion picture industry

executives. SPECIAL FARES VIA AIR FRANCE

CBC Video Hits has 53% of teenage audience

Video Hits, the videoclip/rock news pack- age airing 5 pm EDT weekdays on the full

CBC-TV network, is hosted by Samantha Taylor -

best known in the Toronto area

prior to the show's Oct. 1984 debut as

Music Director at Toronto's Q-107 and

host of Toronto - based Video Singles.

According to Sandra Faire, Executive Pro- ducer of Video Hits,

Taylor was a more than appropriate choice for the host slot because of her extensive on -camera experience and considerable con-

tacts in the music business.

The program currently boasts a 53%

share of the teenage audience (13-20) watching television at 5 pm. The percen-

tage is based on 15 markets, and is derived from statistics provided by A.C. Nielsen.

In addition to Faire, the program is produced by Pam MacFarland and re- searched by Faith Feingold. The CBC provides the services of a production sec-

retary and director.

Taylor is concise in assessing her role. "I like to think of myself as the link be -

Samantha Taylor

tween the artist and the audience," she

says, continuing with "The program reaches markets where no other program goes, and viewers can see major Canadian acts in an

international context. People like Bryan Adams and Corey Hart are, to a great extent,

role models."

The program's national profile is main- tained by covering clubs and concert news

in various Canadian cities, as well as an- swering the flood of mail that Taylor receives each week. Witness the 8,000 letters

Video Hits received in 2 weeks as the result of a Prince contest held prior to the singer's

2 Toronto dates last December.

The program has obviously created a profile for Taylor. "If there's a complaint,

a letter gets written," she assures. "We're a 'pop' program, and we do have a com-

mittee that oversees the videos we program, Surprisingly, it's often the parents who

recognize me and tell me on the street how much their children enjoy us. I guess It's

best to be home watching Video Hits". Taylor was recently a judge - with

David Marsden of CFNY-FM and critic Peter Goddard - on Rock Wars, a CBC

production. The contest, featuring 4 Toron- to bands, was hosted by Brad Giffen. The

bands were judged in one of several com- petitions to be held nationally. The Rock

Wars segment will air on CBC (Feb. 1).

Sade, Jagger, Gowan & Moyet - priority at CBS

Promo Profile by Lynda Kay Lynda Kay, Manager of Press and Publicity

for CBS Records Canada is confident of the company's continuing roll for the new year,

as she reports in the following: The new year has seen the release of 4

priority solo projects on CBS. These are Sade (Diamond

Life), Alison Moyet (Alf), Gowan's

Strange Animal, and Mick Jagger's She's The Boss. Sade is

already breaking across Canada with

her initial single re- lease Hang On To Your Love. Her de-

but LP, Diamond Life, is platinum - plus in the U.K., and Sade was recently

voted the country's top female vocalist by Record Mirror. The LP is scheduled for release the last week of January.

Alison Moyet's debut LP is simply titled Alf. Her first single and video release from the album is titled Invisible. Alison

is the former lead singer of Yazoo. She recently topped Sounds' Female Vocalist

Of The Year poll. The LP has just been released.

Gowan's second LP release for CBS is Strange Animal. The initial single and video release is Criminal Mind. The video, direct-

ed by Robert Quartly of Champagne Pictures, blends animation with live action,

and was close to 3 months in the making.

Lynda Kay

Gowan's LP was recorded in England, pro- duced by David Tickle, and features such

top musicians as Tony Levin, Jerry Marot- ta, David Rhodes, and Chris Jarrett. Gowan

plans to tour Canada in support of this release. No dates are confirmed at present.

She's The Boss is the title of Mick Jagger's debut solo LP set for release the second week of February. Just Another Night, the first single, will be delivered to radio Jan. 23. The single features such greats as Jeff Beck, Robbie Shakespeare,

and Sly Dunbar. Jagger co -produced the LP with Nile Rodgers and Bill Laswell,

which features in addition to the above musicians, Pete Townshend, Herbie Han-

cock, Ray Cooper, and Jan Hammer, to name a few.

Other releases due out within the next few weeks include Flash And The Pan

(Early Morning Wake Up Call), Danny Spanof's Looks Like Trouble, and the

motion picture soundtrack Heavenly Bodies which includes tracks from Bonnie Pointer,

The Tubes, Gary Wright, and The Boys Brigade. New Canadian releases are the second LP

from Orphan, produced by Jon Astley and Phil Chapman, recorded at Kingdom Sound

in New York and mixed in Manchester, England; and John MacLeod and The

Young Pioneers, the latest signing from True North Records. The LP is Dynamite

In The Stove. Touring soon will be Kick Axe, whose

LP surpassed gold status in Canada, as well as country artists Tammy Wynette, Janie

Fricke, and Exile.

Alert's Berry & Durand gear for a busy '85

Alert Records, the aggressive independent fuelled by the moxy of Tom Berry and Marc

Durand, is set for 1985 with a U.S. deal for guitarist Kim Mitchell, a debut LP in Feb-

ruary from recent signing Sylum, and the latest single from The Box.

Mitchell's debut Alert LP akimbo alo-

go - having sold in excess of 75,000 units in Canada

- will be released in mid -Feb-

ruary in the U.S., U.K., and Germany. The signing is to the Bronze label in the U.K. In

Adams tops MuchMusic climbs Video Hits

Run To You, the first single taken from Bryan Adams' A&M LP Reckless, tops the

MuchMusic video chart for the week ending Jan. 18. On the Video Hits (CBC-TV) chart for the same week, Adams is in the No. 4

slot, up from No. 5 last week.

The MuchMusic Top 5 is rounded out by Bruce Springsteen (Born In The USA) at

No. 2, Bronski Beat (Smalltown Boy) in the No. 3 slot, Band Aid (Do They Know It's

Christmas) holding down the No. 4 spot, and Foreigner (I Wanna Know What Love

Is) at No. 5. On the Video Hits chart, Madonna re- mains at No. 1 with the title track from her WEA LP Like A Virgin. Duran Duran (Wild

Boys) remain at No. 2, The Honeydrippers (Sea Of Love) hold down No. 3, and Pat

Benatar (We Belong) is down to No. 5.

Platinum plus sales for classical album

Charles Dutoit and The Montreal Symphony Orchestra have earned the unprecedented

distinction of creating the very first record- ing by a Canadian classical ensemble to

surpass platinum status (sales in excess of 100,000 units) in Canada. The MSO's interpretation of Ravel's Bolero

- recorded in 1981 and released in

1982 - was certified gold (50,000) in Nov.

1983. This level of achievement is singular for

a Canadian classical ensemble and serves to substantiate the popularity of Ravel's work

as well as the critical kudos accorded the MSO's recording.

Ass (Rock 'N Roll). Produced by EddieHansen and Boss.

TRUE WEST - Country rockDrifters - Passport - PVC -8921-WWhile the synth/dance/funk end of popcontinues strongly, the past year has seenthe resurgence of what can best be charac-terized as country rock - ringing guitars, hook -laden songwriting, and frequentlymaudlin, distracted vocals. True West hasstaked a strong claim in this region. Gui-tarists Richard McGrath and Russ Tolmanweave an often spare but attractive rhyth-mic pastiche that supports Gavin Blair'swistful vocals. Ten well -written and neatlyexecuted tracks here that pay homage notonly to Dylan and The Byrds, but also tothe current crop of young rockers exploringthe limits of guitar -based pop - Jason andThe Scorchers, Rank And File, and R.E.M.to name a few. Produced by Paul Mandland guitarist Tolman at The Automatt inSan Francisco. Key tracks: Hold On, AtNight They Speak, and Morning Light.

MALCOLM McLAR EN - Pop -OperaFans - Charisma - VM-2308-QOld King's Road meets Gilbert and Sullivan.Producer/lyricist/entrepreneur/litigant Mc -Laren delivers another in a long line of ideaspredicated more on style and calculatedoutrage than on substance. The formermanager of The Sex Pistols now hands ushigh opera - with an apparently straightface - candy -coated in Trevor Horn stylestudio funk. An interesting - but inevitablysuperficial - record that doesn't do justiceto either Bizet or Puccini. Various pro-duction credits. Inner sleeve contains libret-to. Whatever did happen to Bow Wow Wow?

JOHN FOGERTY - RockCenterfield - Warner Bros - 92-52031-PComeback of '85. Great writing and per-formance from a latter-day American

legend. Key are I Saw It On T.V., and TheOld Man Down The Road - pre -released asthe first single and closing on RPM's Top50. Produced by Fogerty.

LOS LOBOSHow Will The Wolf SurviveSlash/Warner Bros - 92-51771-PArguably destined to be one of '85's 10best. A rollicking, yet respectful distillationof trad Chicano music and R&B-tingedAmerican rockabilly. Produced by T -BoneBurnett and Steve Berlin. Key are the titletrack, Serenata Nortena, and A MatterOf Time.

RATTRatt - Time Coast - 79-02451-PToo pop to be metal, but still a tired re-hash of well -worked glam/metal cliches.ZZ Top are safe.

ffele111: I II Ali A new showplace for Peterborough

The Celebrity Room of Peterborough's Branscombe Motor Inn had its official

opening (Jan. 9). Eddie Eastman & The Terra Nova Express did the honours and

played the new room for two days. The room will feature name acts in country, three nights a week (Thurs/Fri/Sat). East- man was followed by Joe Aylward & The

Yelverton Express (17-19), Terry Sumsion (24-25) and Kitty Wells for one night only

(26). Donna & Leroy Anderson cap the month (Jan. 31 through Feb 2).

Baker does it her way!! The recent Tom Jones release of I'm An Old

Rock 'N' Roller, is beginning to fade in the U.S. and there isn't too much hope for the

success of this single in Canada - if in fact it's been released in Canada. The song was co -written by Carroll Baker and Terry

Frewer, which gives it 2 -parts Cancon.

Taylor finalizes deal for label/publishing sale

George Taylor, veteran music publisher and independent label owner, has finalized

a deal for the sale of his label/publishing complex to Frank Swain of Holborne Dis- tributing.

The sale involves the Rodeo, Banff, Celtic, Canadian Cavalcade and Caprice labels, and was effective Oct. 1st. 1984.

Also sold to Swain was the Banff and Rodeo Music Publishing firms (PRO Canada)

and Melbourne Publishing (CAPAC), ef- fective Jan. 1st. 1985.

Taylor founded Rodeo in 1949, a label that became a leadef in the release of

Canadian product, notably LPs by Don Messer and Winston Fitzgerald. Taylor

also released Lucille Starr's famous French Song in the late fifties, and was instrumental

in the career of the Mamas And Papas, who were originally recorded by Taylor as The Colonials, then going to Capitol as The Halifax Three and finally as the inter-

nationally -acclaimed Mamas And Poppas. There were more than 500 albums

released through Rodeo/Banff and asso- ciated labels since 1949, many of which

are still active. George and his wife Grace are living

in Cavan, Ontario.

Baker recorded the song at her Manta session and, after hearing the tape, one

observer noted: "That's a Carroll Baker I've never heard before

- one of the best country -rock recordings I've heard. It

might be unconventional but releasing the Baker version of I'm An Old Rock 'N'

Roller, could be the big break for Carroll."

Jamie Warren has hot release Jamie Warren is looking good with his latest single, Take Me Home Mississippi,

described as "a nostalgic ballad with sensi- tive lyrics." With this release, Warren is al-

most assured of making it three for three. His first single, World Of A Child broke the national barrier for Warren and the

follow-up, We Care About Us, scored him across-the-board chart and playlist adds

that established him as one of the most promising of the new artists. Take Me Home Mississippi has indicated quicker acceptance

by country programmers, one in particular being Robin Ingram at CFAC Calgary where

the single scored a "Most Requested" tag. Perras and Taylor ready for '85

Anita Perras and Tim Taylor finished 1984 in good style with excellent national ex-

posure (chart and playlistings) for their individual singles, How's A Girl To Know

and Three Little Words. They will now concentrate on the completion of their

second album, which will be a compilation of duets and solo tracks by both artists.

CTL release for new Denis single

CTL recording artist Tim Denis is on release with Fallin', a Denis original. The flip, I

Wanna Be The One, was penned by Alan Rhody (responsible for The Oak Ridge

Boys' I'll Be True To You). Both the plug (MAPL) and flip (AP) were produced

by Stan Campbell. A native of Port Colborne, Ontario, Denis plays guitar, piano, and sax, and is

the morning man at QR-FM in St. Cathar- ines, Ontario.

Fallin' is a re-recorded effort originally released in 1982. "This CTL recording is a

major development for me," says Denis. "I got to do the recording at The Reflections

in Nashville, and to work with premiere country studio musicians

. . . I can't believe

how exciting a song like Fallin' sounds with the enhanced production, thanks to CTL."

An early spring release is expected on the Tailspin label. The first single is expected

to be one of the duet tracks. 1984 also saw Tim and Anita move away from the club

circuit for successful concert dates, sharing the stage with Canadian and American acts.

Television guest shots were also on the in- crease in 1984 and is expected to continue
