What Are the Different Types of Elbow Disorders?

Elbow Fracture■ A fracture happens when a

bone cracks or breaks.

Page 6: Elbow Pain

What Are the Different Types of Elbow Disorders?

Elbow FractureType I: A "nondisplaced" fracture, where the bone has a break, but is still in its normal position.Type II: A fracture where a fragment of bone is shifted from its normal position.Type III: The most serious type of fracture, with multiple breaks of the bone.

What Are the Different Types of Elbow Disorders?

Elbow Dislocations

■ Can dislocate in various directions.

■ Occurs when a bone moves from its usual position.

Page 8: Elbow Pain

Symptoms for Dislocation or Fracture of the Elbow

■ Visual changes to the elbow, such as swelling and discoloration

■ Inability to move the joint■ Loss of motion■ Pain during movement■ Numbness around the area■ Tingling feeling

Page 9: Elbow Pain

Treatments for Dislocation or Fracture of the Elbow

■ Elbow padding■ Surgical treatments■ Physical therapy■ X-rays

Page 10: Elbow Pain

Causes for Dislocation or Fracture of the Elbow

■Falls. Falling onto an outstretched hand can pop the upper arm bone out of alignment within the elbow joint.

■Motor vehicle accidents. The same type of impact can occur when passengers in motor vehicle accidents reach forward to brace themselves before a collision.

Page 11: Elbow Pain

Prevention for Dislocation or Fracture of the Elbow

■ Take precautions to avoid falls.■ Wear the suggested protective gear

when you play contact sports.■ Don't carry objects that are too heavy.

What Are the Different Types of Elbow Disorders?

Medial Epicondylitis(Golfer’s Elbow)

Lateral Epicondylitis (Tennis Elbow)

• Repetitive throwing motion

• Inflammation of the muscles of the forearm that attach to the elbow

Page 14: Elbow Pain

Symptoms for Golfer’s and Tennis Elbow

Medial Epicondylitis(Golfer’s Elbow)

Lateral Epicondylitis (Tennis Elbow)

• Swelling on the inside of your elbow.

• Severe pain• Soreness

• Pains• Burning occur

outside of the forearm near the elbow

Page 15: Elbow Pain

Treatments for Golfer’s and Tennis Elbow

■ Rest■ Wear braces (tennis elbow strap)■ Physical therapy■ Apply ice to the injured area■ Light exercise (Rehab)

Page 16: Elbow Pain

Causes for Golfer’s and Tennis Elbow

■Weakened, strained and fatigued forearm extensor muscles.

■ Repetitive flexing, gripping, or swinging

■Overweight training

Page 17: Elbow Pain

Prevention for Golfer’s and Tennis Elbow

■ Warm up■ Regular exercises■ Use the right equipment■ Fix your form■ Know when to rest

What Are the Different Types of Elbow Disorders?

Elbow Arthritis Bicep Tendon Rupture• Occurs when you

start to lose cartilage around elbow joint and the joint itself starts to degenerate.

• A distal biceps tendon tear

Cubital Tunnel Syndrome

• Occurs when you have compression of your ulnar nerve on the inside of your elbow.

Symptoms of Elbow Disorders

Elbow Arthritis Bicep Tendon Rupture

• Pain, • Stiffness • Decreased range of

motion• Difficulty bending

the elbow

• Experience pain• Swelling• Bruising at the front

of your elbow.

Cubital Tunnel Syndrome

• Swelling• Pain • Hand weakness.

Page 20: Elbow Pain

Treatments of Elbow Disorders

Elbow Arthritis Bicep Tendon Rupture

• Rest• Light exercise

• Surgery (reattach your bicep tendon to the radial tuberosity)

• Steroid injectiom

Cubital Tunnel Syndrome

• Rehab• Surgery (Extreme

cases)

Page 21: Elbow Pain

Causes of Elbow Disorders

Elbow Arthritis Bicep Tendon Rupture

• Too much workout at the gym (5 days a week)

• Manual labour jobs• Smoking

Cubital Tunnel Syndrome

• Lack of calcium• Gout

• Repeatedly lean on your elbow, especially on a hard surface

• Bend your elbow for sustained periods, such as while talking on a cell phone or sleeping with your hand crooked under your pillow

Page 22: Elbow Pain

Prevention of Elbow Disorders

Elbow Arthritis Bicep Tendon Rupture

• Correcting your working position

Cubital Tunnel Syndrome

• Stretching• Consume calcium

• Stretching the tissue• Elevate the elbow
