Sign up today and get started on your quest to be the best. Included in our program, we teach our students the proper methods of dealing with bullies and bullying. Some of these lessons are simply based on learning how to be assertive when they walk, talk, sit and act. For the older students, we teach the psychology of a bully and how to avoid or defuse confrontations. The classes are tailored according to age but nonetheless, we empower our students with all the knowledge and skills possible to avoid being a target. Free Workshop on the Medicare Open Enrollment Period (October 15 - December 7, 2013) and Related IssuesA group of experts on Medicare and Medicaid (public health insurance programs), and health care will provide valuable information for the Medicare Open Enrollment Period which runs from October 15 through December 7, 2013. The Open Enrollment Period is the time of year when a recipient may make changes in insurance coverage. For example, we can change a Part D drug prescription plan from one to another or change a Health Maintenance Organization (HMO)/Preferred Provider Organization (PPO), Point of Service Plan (POS), Medicare Advantage Plan or Medicare Health Plan from one to another. We may also decide to leave an HMO and go back to Original Medicare with a separate Part D plan. Coverage changes are effective on January 1st, 2014. This can be a confusing and even worrisome time. Professionals from the Alliance for Aging including the SHINE (Serving the Health Insurance Needs of Elders) Program, Lucy Watson, United HealthCare Medicare Solutions, and Halle Barret, Health Insurance Solutions will provide clear information on the Medicare Program, starting with an explanation of what Medicare is, including its four parts, Part A, B, C, and D, and a review of Health Insurance options. In addition, Physician and “patient advocate,” Dr. Jeffrey Rosen, a Medicare health provider will discuss the preventative, no-cost health screenings and tests that are available for Medicare beneficiaries, including “Wellness Visits” and ways to maximize health services under Medicare and the Affordable Care Act. The Workshop will also include information on the Medicaid Waiver Program that provides home health care services to eligible applicants. Aspects of the Affordable Health Care Act, including the Health Care Insurance Marketplace, the mechanism for people younger than 65 that do not receive Medicare or Medicaid to purchase low-cost requisite health insurance, will also be covered. An extensive Question and Answer period follows the presentation. Riviera Health Resort, Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing Care Facility, will sponsor the event and provide a complimentary lunch.

“Senior Santa” Program Kick-OffIn 2011 the Village of Pinecrest Senior Activities Program joined with Home Instead Senior Care to participate in their “Be a Santa for a Senior” program to spread holiday cheer to lonely or financially-challenged Seniors. Nationally, Home Instead Senior Care has helped provide over 1.2 million gifts to more than 700,000 seniors. Through Pinecrest’s version called “the Senior Santa Program” many kind donors provided gifts for needy Older Adults in Miami-Dade County. Most of the Seniors are without friends or family and have no means of celebrating the holidays. There is a list of specific items needed by the recipients (available at the Pinecrest Community Center). In addition to collecting gifts in the Community Center, we would like to encourage volunteers to set up donation boxes in other locations. They may also help with wrapping gifts for distribution. We thank all the individuals and companies, including Caldwell Banker and Hinshaw Legal Firm, that volunteered last year and made the Pinecrest “Senior Santa” Program the biggest and best ever. Gift collections start Friday, November 1st until Wednesday, December 4th. Gift wrapping will be held at Coral Gables High School on Friday, December 6th. For more information to donate, and to help by volunteering, please contact Pinecrest Senior Activities Coordinator, Janice Drewing at 304-284-0900.

“Women and Osteoporosis, which Exercise is Best?”- Free Program by Dr. Stacey Richardson, Licensed Physical TherapistOsteoporosis causes bones to become weak and brittle. Bone is living tissue, which is constantly being absorbed and replaced. Osteoporosis occurs when the creation of new bone doesn’t keep up with the removal of old bone. Osteoporosis affects men and women of all races. But white and Asian women — especially those who are past menopause — are at highest risk. Expert Stacey Richardson, Physical Therapist at Dade Physical Therapy in Pinecrest, will provide valuable information on one of the most important remedies for osteoporosis, exercise. Through her work as a physical therapist helping people recover from illnesses and accidents, Stacey has a unique knowledge and insight of the components of physical fitness including flexibility, strength, endurance, range of motion, and balance. She knows precisely what areas of the body are most susceptible because of osteoporosis and the most effective kind of exercise to help with this. In addition to her lecture, there will be an interactive training session that targets the major areas of concern for osteoporosis. Participants should be cleared by their doctor if they want to practice the exercises and will complete a “waiver form” at the program. Stacey advises to wear comfortable clothes and shoes. For more information, please call Janice Drewing, 305-284-0900.

A message from your Police Department

The Village of Pinecrest Police Department is committed to protecting the life and property of its residents and visitors. We understand that a burglary often results in the loss of a sense of security; and when a stranger violates the sanctity of a home to steal property, the associated cost can be emotionally and financially devastating to victims. Pinecrest Police Department employees do not take these losses lightly and are genuinely concerned about the personal welfare of the community and the security of every home. While violent crime is a rare occurrence within the village, property crimes remain a constant reminder that we are not immune from opportunistic criminals, thus even the safest community must guard against complacency. Pinecrest officers strive daily to reduce the incidents of crime affecting our community, but it is a well-known fact that the police can be most effective when the community gets involved. For this reason, we encourage residents to report suspicious activity and to heed the following advice.

Residential Burglaries:

The most common threat to our homes is the crime of burglary, which occurs every 15.4 seconds somewhere in the United States. Burglary is a non-confrontational property crime that occurs when no one is at home.

The following is a list of suggestions:

Securing Valuables

• Do not keep jewelry or other valuables in the master bedroom (it is the first room targeted by burglars)

• The last place that you would look if you misplaced your car keys is probably the last place that a burglar will look for your cash and jewelry (hide your valuables)

• Consider a bank safe deposit box for heirlooms and jewelry used infrequently

• Consider a quality safe installed by a reputable company and hidden from view

Alarm Systems / Security Cameras

• Activate alarm systems every time you leave your home

• Alarm systems should have an audible horn/siren to be effective

• Alarm systems should be registered with the Police Department

• Security camera should be visible to the potential burglar

• Camera recording device should be hidden within the residence

• Learn how to work the system should you need to provide video to the Police

Sliding Glass Patio Doors and Windows

• High impact glass provides the most resistance to a burglar

• Use highly visible alarm decals and beware of dog signs

• Keep all drapes and curtains drawn when not home

Lighting and Landscaping

• Use programmable light timers to establish an appearance of occupancy

• Exterior lighting should allow 100 feet of visibility at night

• Exterior lights should be turned off during the day

Keep vegetation low to eliminate concealment points

Vehicle Burglaries:

A Pinecrest Police Department analysis of vehicle burglaries conducted during the first half of 2012 revealed that 73% of the vehicles were left unlocked by their owners.

• Be aware of your surroundings• Do not leave your valuables out in plain sight• Drive home to secure your expensive purchases before going to the next store or restaurant• LOCK YOUR VEHICLE

ADOPT-A-TREE PROGRAM

VILLAGE OF PINECREST

ADOPT-A-TREE PROGRAM

Trees and plants are an integral and vital part of the earth’s ecosystem and provide us with countless benefits. They serve as a natural abatement to noise pollution; they help to remove carbon dioxide from the air; they camouflage unsightly views; they provide shelter for birds and wildlife; they reduce air-conditioning costs by providing shade; they reduce the possibility of flooding by adsorbing excess rain water; and they maintain and improve the aesthetic quality of the Village of Pinecrest, thereby promoting the health and general welfare of the citizenry.

In order to enhance the appearance of the community and improve the overall quality of life for its property owners, the Village of Pinecrest has an Adopt-a-Tree Program, which was developed in response to inquiries about the planting of trees on private property. This innovative program provides Pinecrest property owners with an opportunity to purchase adult trees at low bid prices and encourages the planting of trees on private property in order to increase the overall canopy of the Village of Pinecrest. Tree prices range from $185.00 to $395.00 depending on the species. Please visit www.pinecrest-fl.gov for further details.

In addition, Miami-Dade County also has an Adopt-a-Tree Program that provides property owners up to two free young trees per year. Please visit www.miamidade.gov for information on the County’s program.
