Elder Abuse Case Simulation
} Very limited training in elder abuse interventions in Ontario
} All based on theory } All based on best practices found elsewhere } Nothing in practical basis – we can review
cases and interventions but nothing prepares us well enough for actually addressing cases
} We think we have seen it all but always surprised – cases are not an exaggeration
} Elder Abuse interventions in Ontario are still in its infancy
} We are all learning together as we go } Lectures, literature, webinars, e-learning,
etc. – this can only take us so far } Doing = Learning
} Attempted new style of training/ learning } 3 day course } 2 days of lectures and case review } Involves justice partners and health/social
services – collaboration and breaking down silos
} Day 3 – simulation of elder abuse call
} As they walked through simulation needed to talk out what where seeing
} Identified risk factors, concerns } Interacted with senior (actor) } Interaction with daughters } Determined their course of action } Practice and opportunity for evaluation
} Failure to thrive – hospital admit } EMS attend to medically clear } Health teaching } Are there grounds to remove from the home
against POA wishes? } Least intrusive } Best outcomes?
