Artists in the StudioSunshine Coast ElderCollege Fall 2020

On five Tuesday mornings we will virtually visit five local Sunshine Coast artists who will: • Showcase their art• Discuss how they work• Describe and demo their media, techniques and style• Engage participants in discussions

Sandy Kay - Painter

During my session I will demo painting in stages showing transparent glazing over a textured ground. • One of my goals is to show how principles of

design can establish a strong focal point.• My demo will show a technique that enables the

artist to work with a limited palette and result in a beautiful painting that even a beginner can master.

• My subject will be a woodland view. • Participants will engage in Q & A


Coralie Swaney – Painter & Sculptor

Participants will:• View a virtual tour of my studio & gallery • Be introduced to media (acrylic paints,

polymer clay & mixed media• Discuss my process• View a sculpting clay demo• Discuss an art project from seed of idea to

creating the narrative, to conceptualizing how the artwork an best convey the story

• My intent is to instigate smiles


Ruth Rodgers – Pastel Painter

In this session I will discuss and demonstrate how to complete a landscape painting in a naturalistic style, using soft pastels

Participants will be able to:• Define the naturalistic style of painting• Describe the medium of soft/dry pastels and they

are used• Identify the five critical element of design used in

planning an executing any painting• Describe the steps in the creation of a typical soft

pastel painting• Describe appropriate framing techniques for pastel

paintings• Identify the national pastel society and other

resources for further learning


Marlene Lowden – Abstract Painter I will focus on sharing the mysterious world of abstract art through a series of fun demo exercises, introducing the 7 elements of design and how abstract art uses them to convey ideas and emotions along with encouraging questions throughout the demos.

Participants will be able to:• Approach abstract art with greater curiosity • Understand a bit of the history of the

movement• Be familiar with the 7 elements of design• Want to try to create their own abstract art

Project Drawdown

• The course is based on the book “Drawdown, The Most Comprehensive Plan Ever Proposed to Reverse Global Warming”.

• The book attempts to shift the conversation concerning climate change from doom and gloom to one of hope and possibility for the future.

Project Drawdown

• This course will delineate solutions to the problem of global warming and discover that by taking action in our communities we can be part of the solution.

• We will also learn about Drawdown EcoChallenge, a 21 day program aimed at helping individuals learn about Drawdown solutions and contribute to reversing global warming.

• “a process involving those who have a stake in a specific offense, including both the victim and the alleged offender”

• The aim is to collectively address the harm done and to identify the remedies and obligations needed to heal and to put things right as much as possible.

We'll review the history of Restorative Justice in Canada, the influence of First Nations tradition, and learn about its use in our Sunshine Coast community and schools.

We'll examine the impact, results, and benefits for both offender and victim and consider how the Restorative Justice process can help people have those difficult conversations that may heal conflict and dispute.

Memorial Lecture,

The memorial lecture is named after the late Clifford Smith, an

educator and superintendent of schools for many years with School

District 46. He was a passionate advocate of lifelong learning and a

former chair of the original Elder College board.

The event is always free and open to all.

It is presented annually with the fall series of ElderCollege courses.

Dr. Diener, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, is an internationally celebrated scientist. His accomplishments are so numerous and significant that they cannot be done justice here.

In the words of a colleague, Diener is “a world prominent

immunologist. He represents a scientist of extraordinary ability whose

career has made a major impact on the discipline and who has

received world-wide acclaim for his findings. He is also recognized

internationally as founding Chairman of one of the most exciting

immunology departments in Canada.”

Diener is a long-time resident of the Sunshine Coast and lives in

Sechelt.

Our body’s individuality is guarded by complex cellular and molecular interactions, which govern the distinction between “self” and “foreign”.

This lecture centers on understanding these interactions; showing how they provide immunity from potentially fatal invasions by bacteria and viruses and from cancer cells whose molecular structures deviate from “self”.
