“Taking the top job at Eldon Square has certainly been my biggest careerchallenge to date. I have had an absolutely amazing year, getting to knowretailers, meeting our shoppers and being at the heart of many newdevelopments in the centre. I have certainly learnt that Eldon Square isat the very heart-beat of this great city of Newcastle uponTyne, and Iam lucky to have a part to play in its progress. I’ve selected a few of thecentre’s highlights from recent months, and I hope you enjoy readingabout them.Thank you for shopping at Eldon Square and for keepingusTop of the Shops!”

Students in the North East setting their sights on a career in retailare being given a real insight into the industry while still at school.Five years ago, Newcastle Education Business Partnership launcheda project with Capital Shopping Centres, owners of Eldon Squareand Metrocentre, aiming to provide hands-on experience in theretail sector and support school age students studying for businessand retail qualifications. The Retail Gold initiative has proven to be a huge success, enablingdozens of young people to experience work placements in retailoutlets at the two CSC run shopping centres, providing them withthe opportunity to learn on the shop floor and give real meaning totheir academic studies in school.Students training in John Lewis were thrilled when a camera crewfromTyneTeesTelevision arrived to record them in action.

There was a whole lottashakin’ goin’ on in EldonSquare when dancers fromdifferent generations came togetherto celebrate the Fabulous 50s! A 1950sthemed dance and film project, supported by Eldon Square, unified both young and old dancers, culminating in a publicperformance of work in the shopping centre. ‘The UtterLegends’ – young people who regularly meet up with friendsin Eldon Square - joined forces with members of the EldersCouncil of Newcastle and EldonTea Dancers, bringing togetherdifferent generations in a project which rejoices in the fun ofthe 50s.A fun event bringing smiles to shoppers of all ages.

What time is it?October saw the launch of late night shoppingin Newcastle with shops in Eldon Squarestaying open until 8pm week days and 7pmon Saturdays. This had an immediate impacton the city centre evening economy, helpedby free parking in city centre car parks after5pm and support from NE1, the businessimprovement company for Newcastle. Sixmonths on, with the summer well and trulyupon us, we can enjoy light nights and latenight shopping in abundance in the heart ofthe city.

Eldon Square was delighted to host an innovative art exhibition created bypupils fromThomas Bewick School inWest Denton, which provides all-agespecialist provision in Newcastle uponTyne for children and young peoplewith autism. Over a two-year period, pupils completed many walks in coastal, woodland and urban environments, collecting natural, lost or discardedobjects, and gathering sounds and pictures. The resulting Zing exhibitionfeatured amazing sculptures including Spirit of the Sea,Woodland Man,Wonky Music Machine, Clive the Urban Man and Dancing Men, all housedin the innovative exhibition which has been a huge hit with shoppers.

Keeping it greenHARNESSINGTHE HEAT!Engineers from Newcastle & Durham are currently drilling2,000m under the heart of the city to harness geothermal heatfrom the earth and pump out water at 80 degrees centigrade. The success of the project will mean that water being pumpedup at such elevated temperatures would allow fully renewableenergy supply for a large part of the city centre, including EldonSquare, which is home to over 150 retail outlets. We hope thatwe will be able to use deep geothermal energy to supply part orall of our future energy needs.

KEEPINGCHILDREN SAFEEldon Square will be introducing a pioneeringsafety scheme in June, which offers a hotlinenumber to assist parents and guardians infinding children who have been separatedfrom them whilst out shopping. By calling adedicated Child Safe number parents andguardians will be put in contact with oursecurity team, who will use a coordinatedapproach and CCTV to re-unite parentswith their children.Child Safe provides children with freewristbands for parents’ or guardians’ contactnumbers so that, in the event of a child beinglost, the parent or guardian can be contactedquickly. The wristbands will be available freeof charge from customer services desks.

The Jean Genie’sworkshop had FairyTale ending!Eldon Square took part in NewcastleFashionWeek and we all certainly feltthe passion for fashion! The UK’s lateststyle advisor,The Jean Genie, arrived inthe city with a team of advisors to helpshoppers in the search to find theperfect pair of jeans!

Iprefer strong solid colours, and I also feel good in black & white! Ilove this summer’s maxi dresses, they really work for me, you canfeel carefree and glamorous at the same time!”

The first outfit definitely brought out Pam’sflirty side – a bright pink Arianna silk topfrom Coast (£60) which Pam wore with ashort black skirt and boots.“This top is a fabulous colour, and althoughI wouldn’t have ‘gone’ for this style, I think itreally works; it is fun, jolly and very pretty, and something I would possibly wear on alively night out at the races with the girls!”

This Moulin floral silk maxi dress (£110)was teamed with a Jigsaw belt (59) and aJohn Lewis two tone pashmina in gold &ivory (£50) to perfect a chic hippy look.“I am beginning to sound like a stuckrecord, but yet again, here’s another outfitwhich I absolutely adore but would neverhave chosen. “Paula has a size 10 top half and a size16 bottom half, so ‘body balance’ withclothes is necessary to create equilibriumbetween Paula’s top and bottom half. Also Paula has high contrast betweenskin and hair colour so in terms of makeup, deep and cool colours were chosenfor her.”

“I loved all of the outfits … but myfavourite was definitely the Capri pantswith striped jacket.I would never have dreamed of tryingthese on as I am conscious of my hips, but the jacket seemed to take the eyeaway from my curves which I wasgrateful for!!Trying clothes on with Priya advising wasnot the headache that it usually is for me.She seemed to know instinctively whatwould look good.. and Debenhams hada huge range of styles to choose from.”
