Election Day Coverage

It was a mild and sunny day at Precinct 534 in the Carrollwood area. Precinct 534 covers

the east part of Northdale as well as two apartment complexes behind Gaither High School. The

2014 election concludes today with voting open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and results starting to

come in county-wide shortly after 7 p.m. and statewide at 8 p.m.

“There are around 2,400 registered voters in this precinct,” Precinct Clerk Raymond Kelly said.

There are actually 2,511 registered voters in the precinct and the current location, Northdale

Lutheran Church, has been the location for the precinct since the 2004 general election.

Poll workers have to go through training each cycle and lots of preparation goes into

making sure each precinct is resource-ready and ready to serve the public. “This is my first time

working as a poll worker and I would do it again next time,” Shayna, who declined to disclose

her last name, said. “It’s not as hard as many may think and what wakes you up is the people,

you may doze off, but once people come in, it brings you right back to life,” Shayna said.

“I enjoy helping the people each time I do this,” Kelly said. “I’ve been doing this for 15 years

and made my way up from poll worker, inspector, assistant clerk, and now to clerk and it’s been

fun,” Kelly said.

Voting in this election, specifically, turnout has been the message for all of the races

across the country. That is no different in Hillsborough County. “I’ve voted in every election

since I was 18,” 24-year-old Stephanie Teresi said. “I actually feel enthusiastic about voting this

time around as my issue is Amendment 2,” Teresi said. One voter has a national issue as his top

reason to vote, “I’m always up for change and we can only make that happen- raising the

minimum wage is my top issue because you need two people in the household to make things

happen,” Dennis Delvalle said. “Health care costs are going up and we should have other means

to help people such as something from the ground,” Delvalle said.

The results were confirmed later that evening and here are the facts and figures of

Precinct 534.

Election Day 2014 was a nice weather day and a day for citizens to voice their opinion for our

future. The next election statewide is in the winter of 2016 for Presidential Primary for party

nominee and the next local election will be held in the city of Tampa in March of next year.
