The journey….

• First things that are held in order to create the presidential race are primaries and caucuses.

• A primary is an election that happens to take place before the main election. It is run with secret ballots and strict rules under state law. Chooses potential candidates (run by state and local governments).

• A caucus is a bunch of people of a political party who show up at a party meeting and decide, by whatever system they want to use, who their choices for president are(in this case Obama and McCain).

• A total of 19 candidates were in the running of becoming the chosen nominee for each party.

• To receive the position of the party nominee, one must have enough

delegates to be chosen. (some candidates had none).

• A delegate is a person appointed or elected to represent others.

• Delegates are based on the population of a state. In order to become the nominee, (R) 1,191 (D) 2,118 delegates are needed to win.

Mitt Romney (R)

• Born March 12, 1947 in Detroit Michigan

• Graduate of Brigham Young University B.A., 1971and Harvard University M.B.A., J.D., 1975

• Governor of Massachusetts 2002-2007

• Was attacked by his Mormon beliefs

• His father was a three-term governor of Michigan

• Received 271 delegates but dropped out of the race on February 7, 2008

Mike Huckabee (R)

• Born August 24, 1955 in Hope, Arkansas.

• 1975 graduate of Ouachita Baptist University, B.A.

• Governor of Arkansas from 1997 until 2007.

• In 2003, Huckabee was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes.

• Received 278 delegates



John McCain (R)

• Born August 29, 1936, in the Panama Canal Zone

• Attended the U.S. Naval Academy, B.S., 1958; National War College, 1974

• Spent 5 1/2 years in captivity as a prisoner of war in North Vietnam (1967-1973)

• Senator from Arizona

• Won the nomination for republicans with 1,575 delegates.

John Edwards (D)• Born June 10, 1953 in Seneca,

South Carolina• Graduate of North Carolina State

University, B.S., 1974; and the University of North Carolina, J.D., 1977

• Lawyer and former director of the Center on Poverty

• Ran for president in 2004. After dropping out he was named John Kerry’s vice president running mate.

• On his second try running, he dropped out of the presidential race on January 30, 2008

• Although he did not win any states he received (2)6 delegates, making him 3rd runner up.



Hillary Clinton (D)

• Born on October 26, 1947 in Chicago, Illinois

• Graduate of Wellesley College, B.A., 1969; and Yale University Law School, J.D., 1973

• Was the senator of New York

• She is the first first lady to be elected to the U.S. Senate

• Dropped out of the race on June 7, 2008

• Clinton received 1,896 delegates



Barack Obama (D)

• Born August 4, 1961 in Honolulu, Hawaii

• Graduate of Columbia University, B.A., 1983 and Harvard University, J.D., 1991

• Former lawyer and state senator of Illinois in 2004

• He was the first African American to be president of the Harvard Law Review.

• Won the nomination for democrats with 2,201 delegates.

Obama’s chose the senator of Delaware Joe Bidin as his vice president running mate.

• McCain chose Sarah Palin, governor of Alaska, to be his vice president.

• Sarah Palin became the 2nd women to be on a major political ticket

Issues• Major issues that was viewed during the race

were healthcare, the economy/unemployment, the war in Iraq and Immigration

Results

• Many believed the election was going to be a close one.

• On November 4, 2008 Obama became the 44th president of the United States

• Obama won the popular vote with 53% over McCains 46%.

• He became the first colored person to become president.

A win for the democrats!• Electoral college= 365 to 173

Belongs in the Books• The 2008 presidential election wasn’t like any other. History was

made, whether Hillary Clinton became the first female president, or John McCain being the oldest president. The ending result of the race, a colored person as our president. Many who have fought for color equality would not believe this event would happen in US history. Also this election was ground breaking with Sarah Palin being the 2nd female to be on a major political ticket. The 2008 election will be in history books forever because of the so many incredible events that happened and people that ran to make this election one of the most memorable. Overall, the 2008 election is one that will be in the books forever.
