Wear resistanceIndicatesthetimeittakesforamattoloseitsfunctionality.Thisisanacceleratedweartestwheretheresultsareexpressedintotalweightlossofmaterialwhensubjectedto5000cyclesunderanabrasionwheel.Thehigherthepointerinthetestchart,thegreateritsresistancetowear.

Slip resistanceIndicatestheslipresistanceofamat.Thistestmeasurestheforcerequiredtocauseslippageofaloadacrossthesurfacematerial.Thecoefficientistheratioofforcerequireddividedbytheweight.Thehigherthepointerinthetestchart,thegreaterthecoefficientoffrictionratio,thusthebettertheslipresistanceofamat.

How Anti-Fatigue Matting WorksHowananti-fatiguematworksiswelldescribedinanarticlethatwaspublishedintheApril1999issueof“OccupationalHealth&Safety”,writtenbyJamesM.Kendrick:“Anti-fatiguematsareengineeredtomakethebodynaturallyandimperceptiblysway,whichencouragessubtlemovementbycalfandlegmuscles.Thispromotesbloodflowandkeepsitfromstagnatingintheveins,whichcausesworkerstofeelfatigued.”

Standingonhardsurfacesforlongperiodscausesmusclestoconstrict,whichreducesthebloodflow.Thismakesmusclesandjointshurt,anditcausesbloodtostagnate.Long-termstandingcausespronation,orexcessiveflatteningofthefootandcanalsoleadtoplantarfasciitis.Lowerbackpainishighestinworkerswhostand4hoursormoreperday.

AsnotedbyMr.Kendrick,thecushioningeffectofanti-fatiguemattingallowscontinuousmicro-movementsofthefeet,whichminimizesbloodpoolinginthelegs.Thereisgoodreasontobelievethatreductionoffatiguealsoreducesthepossibilityofaccidentsandimprovesgeneralworkefficiency.Therearefewerdayslosttoinjuries,fewermedicalclaims,andcompliancewithnewhealthandsafetyrequirements.

Toomuchcushioningcanhaveanegativeeffect.Toogreatanamountofsoftnessor“give”willactuallycauseexcessivefatiguebecauseitoverworksthemuscles.Thinkofitlikejoggingonthebeach.Notrax®floormatsaremadeofspecificformulationsanddesignsthatprovidefatiguereliefwhichwillcontributetoincreasedproductivityandemployeesatisfaction.

Scientific SupportEarlystudiessuchasMorgora(1972)showedthattheincidenceoflowerbackpainwashighestinthoseworkerswhostoodregularlyforperiodsofmorethanfourhoursandBoussemanetal.(1982)broughttolightthatlongtermstandingisadirectcauseofpainanddiscomfort.SubsequentresearchcarriedoutbyDr.MarkRedfernandDr.DonChaffinattheCentreforErgonomics,UniversityofMichiganin1988,andPaulaHinnenandStephanKonzattheDepartmentofIndustrialEngineering,KansasStateUniversity,1994,madeobservationsofthedifferencebetweenstandingonhardfloorsversusstandingonsoftfloors.Boththeirstudiesconcludedthatmatssignificantlyaffectfatigueandcomfortindifferentbodyregions.

MorerecentstudiesbyProf.Dr.RedhaTaiar(2011,2015,2017)attheUniversityofReimsinFranceillustratedhowhumanmechanicsinaworkingenvironmentareimpactedthroughtheuseofanti-fatiguemats.Byobservingworkers'postureandmeasuringfootpressureforemployeesstandingforlongperiods,Prof.Taiarwasabletoidentifytwocausesoffatigueandthereforeatwo-prongedapproachincombatingthemuscular-skeletaldisordersassociatedwithlong-termstanding.

Firstly,theworkershouldvaryfootpressurewhilestandingtoeliminatetheoveruseofthesamemuscles(CinderellaFibers).Secondly,usingananti-fatiguemateliminatespressurepointsfromthefloorandspreadsweightevenlytocorrectbalance.Prof.Taiar'sfindingsconfirmedthatpainsaresubstantiallyreducedwiththeuseofanti-fatiguematscomparedtotheinitialsituationwithoutmats.
