2The Electric Power Associations of Mississippi serves as the unified voice of allelectric cooperatives in Mississippi. While we do not generate or distribute power, werepresent the people who do, the 25 electric power associations and one generation-and-transmission electric power association. We function as a united service organi-zation for the mutual benefit of all electric power associations and their members.

The associations staff is composed of skilled professionals who provide a widerange of specialized services to member-systems at a state level. The services aredesigned to assist local systems in serving their own members more effectively andeconomically.

Among the areas of the associations expertise are: a government relations programthat monitors legislative action on the state and national levels; member relations;programs that emphasize youth involvement and leadership; economic development;safety and loss control programs; employee training programs; communications andpublic relations, including the publishing of Today in Mississippi (the largest circulat-ed publication in the state) which has a circulation of 465,000; employee creditunion; coordination of insurance programs; and much more.

Our most important function is representing the more than 762,000 memberswho receive their electric service from an electric power association. In a cooperativemanner we are committed to ensuring that each member is provided quality electricservice at the least possible cost. In the spirit of unity, the Electric Power Associations of Mississippi wasorganized in 1943 to meet the challenges facing local electric cooperatives.

The original purpose was to form a group large enough to comply withinsurance requirements to secure group insurance for the employees of themember associations. During this early organizational period, the grouplaunched a statewide publication and established a safety program for mem-ber associations.

The founding fathers were successful in their endeavors. They laid thefoundation on which a comprehensive and diversified statewide organizationwould rise.

As the statewide associationgrew, it offered expanded servic-es. By 1963, services includedextensive work in the broad fieldof public, member and govern-ment relations; a credit union for employees of member associations; and theaddition of an economic development department.

Today, the Electric Power Associations of Mississippi is stronger and morediversified than ever. It proudly serves as the unified voice of all electricpower associations in Mississippi.

Your statewide organization continues to look for effective programs for itsmembers in an effort to find solutions to the challenges of operating an elec-tric cooperative in todays marketplace. Serving our members is the reasonthe statewide office was organized more than 70 years ago.

5Your statewide association serves as thevoice for a very important group of peoplethe 2,850 dedicated employees that make upthe electric power association work force. Weoer services specifically tailored to theirneeds and financial well-being.

e EPA Credit Union was established asa state-chartered, not-for-profit credit unionin 1967 to serve the employees of electricpower associations in Mississippi. Federallyinsured by the National Credit UnionAdministration, the credit union providessavings accounts and consumer loan servicesat competitive rates. Credit union membersare owners and elect directors and membersof the supervisory and credit committees atthe annual meeting, all of whom serve volun-tarily.

Statewide was formed in 1944 in order tooffer a high-quality medical insurance pro-gram for system employees. Today, we contin-

ue to offer this benefit for more than 4,650employees, dependents and retirees. Yourstatewide administers the plan between par-ticipating systems and third-party administra-tors. In addition to handling all financialaspects of the plan, our knowledgeable staffsupports member systems and provides guid-ance when problems are encountered. Themedical insurance industry is constantlychanging, and we work diligently to maintaina strategic plan for the well-being of our plan.

The Workers Compensation Group wasincorporated in 1992 as a separate entity withits own board of directors and officers.

Today the group comprises all 25 distribu-tion systems and statewide and is directed bya seven-person board of directors made up ofparticipating system managers. It provides alocal, ready source of workers compensationcoverage for any electric power association inthe state that wishes to participate.

Sometimes our voice must bestrong and forceful. Safety is ourtop concern, so we constantly stressto more than 2,850 co-op employ-ees the importance of keeping theworkplace safe for everyone. This isthe job of our professional safetyand training instructors. They rou-tinely visit each system to presentinformative programs and provideconstant reminders of the dangers ofthe job. We deliver life-saving safetymessages to our consumers, too.

The department conducts month-ly safety meetings for employees ofeach electric power association.Additionally, they conduct schools,workshops and conferences foremployees in basic and advanced

lineman training, undergroundtraining, staking, fundamentals ofengineering, safety and other topics.

When severe weather causes amajor outage, it's comforting tohear the voice of a statewide staffmember telling you that emergencyrestoration assistance is on the way.When it comes to power restora-tion, our network of electric cooper-atives starts in Mississippi andreaches into more than 20 states.Your statewide staff can recruitthousands of workers and extraequipment to help restore yourmembers' electric service in a pro-fessional, safe and reliable manner.No one appreciates that more thanyour members.
