Process Automation – Digital engineering of pipe heat tracing systems with Intergraph software tools
Automating the engineering for electrical heat tracing, based on a digital database, and implementing data in various in-house areas pays off with signifi cant benefi ts and impressive time savings. The time required for technical design of heat tracing including automatically generated documentation is shortened considerably. Together with Intergraph we make the necessary modifi cations and expansions to the standard software to automate engineering of electrical heat tracing.
Isometrics of pipelines, R&I diagrams, heat tracing and in-sulation specifi cations must be recorded and evaluated for the technical design of a heat tracing system. Recording iso-metrics manually is very time-intensive. If revisions are made to the pipeline planning over the course of a project, heat-ers that have already been planned have to be redesigned.
Recent years have seen a transformation in plant engineer-ing, with data ever more frequently available in digital form. This has led to ideas for automating engineering of electri-cal heat tracing with a corresponding software solution.

TraceVision® Control and Monitoring
Temperature Monitoring and Supervision
TraceVision® is eltherm’s innovative solution for control and monitoring of electrical heat tracing systems for use in any type of industry. It is safe and reliable, and the system’s mod-ular approach provides maximum fl exibility. TraceVision®’s heat tracing controllers may be programmed individually and confi gured for each particular heat tracing circuit.
A heat tracing system may be confi gured with up to 72 temperature controllers (type EL-HTC/22) capable of pro-viding several operating modes, including ON/OFF, PI or ATPC (ambient sensing) control. Each controller may be in-dividually programmed and key parameters including tem-perature set points and alarm limits, current alarm levels as well as input from up to 12 temperature probes may be confi gured.
TraceVision® is based on an industrial PLC platform with multiple CAN-BUS I/O modules. The user may access the system using eltherm’s software, developed exclusively for and based on a client-server approach, allowing several sessions from several devices to be operated at the same:
� TraceVision® Viewer: client software to allow the user to operate the system by connecting to the server (TraceVision® Manager)
� TraceVision® Manager: server software which allows the connection to multiple Viewers, performs the following functions:
a) Manage the database which stores all the information of the particular project
b) Manages communications with the heat tracing controllers and interface with TraceVision® Viewer
c) Logs alarms and data from the heat tracing control-lers to the database
TraceVision® software is compatible with any computer operating with Windows OS, and it runs smoothly even in machines with few resources.

eltherm EHT engineering was involved in many down-stream projects, including special applications such as modular minirefineries, revamping or installation of refinery units. We mainly provide and deliver heat tracing for refin-ery process units licensed by others or plant utilities includ-ing power distribution of oily water treatment plants.

eltherm heats LNG storage tanks from Linde
The Linde AG built by order of Skangass AS from Norway in Stavanger/Norway a Natural Gas Liquefaction Plant. Linde commissioned eltherm GmbH with the electrical heat trac-ing of the foundation of the liquefied natural gas tank and the whole pipeline system of the plant. The foundation of the Liquifi ed Natural Gas Tank has a diameter of approx. 50 m. Because of the low temperature within the storage tank of -160 °C, frost can occur around and under the tank and also within the foundation of the Natural Gas Liquefaction Plant. By heating, the foundation shall be protected inside and outside from crack formation caused by temperatures around -160 °C. Therefore a maintenance temperature of 5 °C was defined.
The eltherm engineers worked on a suitable design to en-sure a reliable frost protection. Because of safety reasons a redundant system was chosen. So a complete breakdown can be avoided and the risk of damages can be minimized.
For foundation heating the eltherm heating cable ELKM-AGN was chosen, which is absolutely suitable for highly corrosive ambient conditions and has a very high chemical resistance despite of high operating temperatures. The heat-ing cable is also certified for usage in hazardous areas (Ex areas) and is produced according to VDE-directives. Highest quality, reliability and durability are therefore assured.
Additionally to the heating cables eltherm also designed and delivered the complete control room for operating the system. As second part of the project, the complete pipeline system of the plant with all drums and pumps was heated. The target of trace heating this system was, additional to frost protection, also temperature maintenance for the production process between 15° C and 140 °C, just like required.
Major project in Singapore: LNG storage tanks – Bottom Heating System
eltherm, together with Samsung as the turnkey EPC, exe-cutes a major project from the Singapore LNG Corporation owned by Singapore government. The Singapore LNG ter-minal will be the first open-access, multi-user LNG terminal in Asia.
eltherm´s scope of supplies for the project includes engi-neering, design, procurement, construction & supervision, testing & commissioning and documentation for the heat-ed LNG tanks with a diameter of 91 meters. Additional LNG storage tanks are expected to be built on a 30 hectare plot at the Meranti Seafront on Jurong Island.
Due to its cryogenic temperature of -170 °C within the stor-age tank, heat tracing is essential to prevent soil freezing and frost heave on the concrete base of the tank. For each tank, kilometers of eltherm Ex-certified self-regulating heat-ing cables (ELSR-N) shall be based on our Thermal Analysis Report of the project.
Air Separation Units for Linde-Gas and Linde Engineering
Design and construction of air separation plants for heat tracing is part of eltherm´s traditional scope of activities, which have led to the establishment of eltherm´s Engineer-ing Division since 2011.
From Power and Control- Panel Design and manufacturing over heated hoses for Analysis system of emission control of CO-2 eltherm can not even supply industrial solutions for pipe heating and tank heating with ELSR-N/H cables and Series Cables we are also a provider of customized engi-neering solutions.

Applications
Typical applications for electric trace heating are found offshore on platforms, FPSOs, FSOs, ships and drilling rigs.
Freeze Protection
25 % of known oil and gas resources are located in extreme-ly cold areas. Ships and platforms destined for those regions and other bitterly cold locations need to come with trace heated components and equipment.
Freeze protection, e.g. piping, valves, fittings and instrument tubing for fire protection water, potable water, sea and fresh cooling water, drill water and bilge water discharge.
Anti-icing (kept ice-free), e.g. door seals, ballast tank vents and cargo system valves.
De-icing (ice removal within 4–6 hours), e.g. helidecks, gangways, walkways, ladders, antenna, scuppers and rail-ings, freezer room doors.
Recommended heaters: ELSR-N or ELSR-H self-regulating heating cable with ambient sensing thermostat control.
