The 9th edition of the County of Dufferin’s Take It Back! Directory is here…

Lets face it; we all generate waste. Currently, we are helping to reduce,

reuse and recycle many of our unwanted items. However, there are

still materials thrown into our garbage bags that go to landfill sites. In fact, in Ontario we send approximately ten million tonnes of waste to landfills each year.

Municipal governments currently handle the majority of residential collection including large items, waste and recycling. On January 1 2013, the County of Dufferin will assume the authority of all curbside waste

management programs. With programs such as blue box

recycling, green bin and yard waste

composting, household hazardous waste and

electronic goods recycling, we are doing what we can to divert

waste from landfills. However, there are still many products out there that cannot be handled through municipal diversion programs.

This terrific reference guide can help you to further reduce your household waste. It lists retailers, vendors, and organizations that ‘take back’, used products and materials. Returned products and materials are reused, recycled or disposed of properly. Charitable and community organizations that accept products for reuse and recycling are also listed.

What is the “Take It Back!” Program?

The Take It Back! Program gives residents

in Dufferin County the opportunity to

conveniently take their used products

and materials to participating retailers,

vendors and organizations for reuse,

recycling or safe disposal. Products

accepted through this program are

‘special’, in that they cannot be recycled

through the blue box recycling program,

and should not be thrown in the regular

garbage or disposed of down the drain.

all products must be dropped off during business hours. Please call ahead to the retailer (some retailers request an appointment to be made in advance)

Reduce Your Waste!

Reducing the amount of waste you produce in the first place can help to conserve resources and protect the environment. Practice Smart Shopping

' Choose products with the least amount of packaging. ' Buy in bulk for commonly used items. ' Avoid purchasing disposable products. ' Consider purchasing used goods before purchasing new. ' Buy products made from recyclable materials. ' Avoid waste and spoilage by not purchasing more than is

needed. ' Choose products sold in refillable or recyclable

containers. ' Bring your own reusable cloth bags. ' www.Freecycle.org -receive and share reusable items.

Reduce Waste at Home

Use cloth towels instead of paper towels. Recycle and compost! Pack lunches and dinners in reusable containers, not

plastic bags. Donate reusable clothing and household goods to local

charities. Charitable options can be found throughout the Take It Back directory.

Use reusable cloth or gift bags instead of wrapping paper. If you do use wrapping paper, make sure it is non-foil wrapping paper as that is not recyclable.

Use rechargeable batteries. Avoid disposable plates and utensils for get-togethers.

Tips to Become Environmentally Friendly Turn the lights off when you leave a room. Turn the tap off when brushing your teeth or washing your face.

On average 11 liters of water can be saved if you do. Carpool or use public transit when possible. Use a low flow shower head and toilet if possible. You will save

water and money on your water bill. Canadian drivers idle their cars on average of 5 to 10 minutes a

day. Turn off your ignition if idling for more than 10 seconds (after this time restarting the car uses less fuel than idling), avoid

using drive-thrus, and don’t start the ignition until you and any passengers are ready to go.

Around the House Mold and Mildew Use vinegar and a toothbrush or scrub with baking soda. Disinfectant Use 1/2 cup of borax, in 4 litres of warm water. Abrasive Powders Use baking soda instead. Moth Balls Use cedar chips or lavender and shredded newspaper. Window Cleaner Use 2 tbsp. vinegar in 1.5 litres of warm water, rags can be used in place of paper towels. Air Fresheners Use 1/2 cup borax in the bottom of the garbage can OR boil cinnamon and cloves in water and place 30-60 mL of baking soda in small bowls around the house. Deodorizer Cover the rug with baking soda. Leave for at least one hour and vacuum. Drain Opener Pour boiling water down drain twice weekly, throw a few handfuls of baking soda followed by a 1/2 cup vinegar, let sit for an hour, then run water through.

The Laundry Room

Stain Removers Immediately soak spot/stain in cool water and sponge away.

Fruit and/or Red Wine Stain Soak in club soda or sprinkle stain with an absorbent powder such as salt, baking soda or cornstarch. Wait until the powder becomes sticky, carefully remove and add more powder. Repeat until most of the stain is gone. Apply a final dusting. Wait two hours, brush away and wash with a mild detergent solution.

Oil Stain Before laundering, rub white chalk into oil stain.

Ink (ballpoint) Stain Sponge with rubbing alcohol or hair spray. Rub with soap, rinse and wash.

Grease Stain Rub with cloth dipped in borax or apply a paste of cornstarch and water. Let dry and brush off. Cover affected area with baking soda or cornstarch. Leave for one hour and brush off carefully.

These ‘green’ cleaning alternatives can reduce the number of toxic products around your home!

To avoid contamination, be sure to remove any packaging from food or other organics before placing them into the bin.

What goes in your green bin?

ALL food waste, including:

Lining the Bin There are a number of options for lining your green bin and kitchen container:

No liner at all: Placing organics in the green bin loose is acceptable, however food may freeze to the bottom of the bin in the winter.

Duct tape a plastic bag into the bin: Plastic bags are not allowed in the collection truck, so duct tape the bag into the green bin so that it does not come out when the food waste is collected.

Newspaper or paper bags: We suggest wrapping organic material in newspaper or paper bags to absorb moisture, reduce odours and pests, and to help prevent your material from sticking or freezing to the green bin in the winter.

Shredded Paper: Shredded paper placed in the bottom and throughout your bin absorbs moisture and smells. It also helps keep food from freezing to the bottom of the bin during the winter

Certified Compostable Bags:

Some residents may prefer the additional convenience of using certified compostable bags in the green bin or kitchen container. These liners are 100% compostable, come in sizes to fit both containers and will minimize odours, insects and leakage. Bags should be tied; please do not use
