JFB students get a lesson in Shawnee history

The Rev. Fred Shaw, a United Methodist Church minister, is also a Shawnee. An official storyteller for the tribe, Rev. Shaw came to J.F. Burns Elementary February 25, to teach students about Shawnee legends, history and contributions to society.

The crowd was full of eager fourth graders as Rev. Shaw told students that his people have been in the United States for 912 years. As natives of this land, his people have contributed a lot to our culture. From the Shawnee we've been given sign language, medicine, vegetables and some words. Many cities and rivers in the Ohio valley are named from Shawnee words such as Scioto, Chilicothe and Piqua.

Rev. Shaw was dressed in a Shawnee outfit, complete with face paint, as he spoke to

the students. He

explained that the

paint on his face

would tell others

that he is a story-

teller and a peaceful

man.

South Lebanon Summer Library

This year marks the 5th summer for the South Lebanon Summer Li-

brary, created by Peggy and Dave Allen. Peggy had the idea years ago

to have a place where kids in the town of South Lebanon could have

access to books all summer long—within walking distance. After

checking with the city manager and learning that a room in the old SLE

building could be utilized as a library, Peggy and Dave got to work to

make this dream a reality. With a little elbow grease from various vol-

unteers, monetary donations, and book donations, they were able to

open the summer library 5 years ago, which they run themselves.

There have been around 100 kids each summer who have used the

library, as well as area adults. It’s a great way to keep kids reading in

the summer and a great way to keep in touch with them.

If you have gently used books you would like to donate—from pre-

school books to adult, please contact Peggy at [email protected].

They will make arrangements to get them picked up and to the library.

Also, feel free to drop by and visit in the summer—many teachers have

dropped in over past summers. Hours will be posted as the time nears.

Peggy is the Title 1 Reading Teacher at South Lebanon Elementary and

Dave is the Guidance Counselor at CIS. Both of them attended South

Lebanon Elementary 1st through 8th grade and graduated from Kings.

Thanks to all of the different student organizations in the district who

have donat-

ed their

time and/or

books in the

past. It is

much ap-

preciated!

Kings Senior Yard Signs

The time has come to take orders for the 12th annual Senior Yard Sign display! For those that may be new

this year, signs are printed on both sides, like the sample above (The actual size is 24” x 18”). Your student’s

name is hand printed on the bottom of each side by parent volunteers, stapled onto brackets. You can per-

sonally pick up your sign or have your senior bring the sign home from school. Pick up is 6:30-7:30 p.m. May

9, in the HS Cafeteria, or seniors will bring signs home from school on May 10. We know how proud you are of your student’s ac-

complishment in graduating and this is such a fun way to show it to friends, neighbors and the community in general! We truly

hope to have 100 percent participation so no one will be left out. Simply complete the form from the link below and return by Fri-

day, April 19, along with your $10 (checks made payable to KAPP (Kings After Prom Party). Feel free to order as many as you

want!

If you are able to help with the printing of the student’s names on these signs, please complete that portion of the form as well.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to call Diane Westaway at 513-543-3371 or you may email her at westa-

[email protected]. Thanks! (There is a $10 fee for any returned checks). Senior Yard Signs Form
