Elekta enables Agile in highly regulated environment
Implementing an Agile Delivery and Service Design Framework
Executive Summary
Stretching the boundaries of science and technology, providing intelligent and resource-efficient solutions that offer confidence to both healthcare providers and patients, human care company Elekta aims to improve, prolong and even save patient lives.
The BAOS facility in Crawley, West Sussex carries out new product development and manufacture of a range of radiotherapy treatment systems. These systems have a large software component. The software development organisation recognised the need to improve their delivery capability and made the decision to adopt an Agile approach for the development teams. The highly regulated character of the industry is traditionally a challenging environment for Agile software development, although regulatory authorities such as the FDA are now actively supporting the use of Agile in the development of medical devices.
The initial Agile adoption, based on Scrum, achieved a level of success on the major development project on which it was used. However, Elekta recognised improvements could still be made and engaged with Radtac in 2011 to lead this improvement effort.

In working together with Elekta to improve the company’s Agile adoption, Radtac provided the following:
Agile assessment to examine the current state of Agile adoption within the software development organisation
Recommendations on how to develop the Agile adoption further
A series of one-day dedicated Agile awareness training sessions for a wide range of personnel within the development organisation
Certified Scrum Master and Product Owner training
Specialist customised courses such as Story Writing, Agile Estimation, Agile refreshers
Highly skilled and experienced Agile coaches, including specific experience in the radiotherapy field, to work with the development teams on a day-to-day basis to encourage and assist in the implementation of the various Agile practices.

Results, Return on Investment and Future Plans
Elekta continues to work with Radtac since work began in 2011 to support and constantly optimize their Agile transformation. The work has lead to a fundamental change in the IT delivery philosophy, to enable delivery of valuable software to the business.
