    Overview

    One mans trash is another mans treasure is the theme for this module. Members will learn the importance of the 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle) in this interactive module. From learning about Rachel Carson, a famous environmentalist, to taking trash and turning it into a masterpiece, members will see that saving our earth can be quite fantastic!!

    Introduction

    Loving the Earth means more than just saying ityou have to protect it! Members will understand the importance of what it means to go green as they become immersed in this module. Members will see that going green is more than a colorits a way of life!!

    Special Notes

    Prior to the activity, the following items need to be collected: Toilet Paper Rolls (2 per member) Recycled Objects:

    Styrofoam: egg cartons, packing peanuts; food containers; meat trays Cardboard: food boxes, paper boxes, corrugated boxes, ice cream containers, drink trays, toilet paper/paper towel rolls Plastics: soap containers, lotion bottles, shampoo bottles, laundry bottles & lids, plastic shopping Bags, soda 6-pack rings Aluminum: soda cans, clean/used tin foil, food wrapper linings Paper: shredded paper, envelopes, letters, junk mail, Odds & Ends: CDs, broken pieces of furniture, chipped plates/mugs, jewelry pieces Wire: old coat hangers, twist ties from garbage bags Nylon: clean, used panty hose Metals: nuts & bolts, screws, soda tabs/lids Fabric: old tablecloths, sheets, scrap fabric swatches, torn clothing, old curtains

    Word Definition

    Greening Process of transforming artifacts such as a space, a lifestyle or a brand image into a more environmentally friendly version

    Natural Resources Materials or substances such as minerals, forests, water, and fertile land that occur in nature and can be used for economic gain.

    Consumption The using up of a resource.

    Pollution The presence in or introduction into the environment of a substance or thing that has harmful or poisonous effects.

    Ecosystem A biological community of interacting organisms and their physical environment.

    Waste Waste is anything we throw away or get rid of, that doesnt get used.

    Pesticides A chemical that is used to kill animals or insects that damage plants or crops.

    Conservation The protection of animals, plants, and natural resources

    Environmentalist A person who works to protect the natural world from pollution

    Earth Steward Responsible use and protection of the natural environment through conservation and sustainable practices.

    Say: Have you ever heard the term, going green? This week we will be delving into the meaning and how we can become environmental stewards for our earth. An environmental steward is a person that takes responsibility for maintaining the earth. Lets watch this video of an environmental steward who is young just like you all.
