Let’s do out part to help them through this crisis. Something so small as purchasing gift cards, writing positive reviews, and referring them to a friend can go a long way through these times. Let’s band together and make our community strong, lets band together to make our country stronger. We will get through this; there is a reason why we are called the UNITED States of Ameri-ca. We are stronger and better together. So please do your past in trying to help the businesses that make Elevation Living happen.

As always, this publication is completely free to all residents and always will be. Elevation Living is 100 percent funded by the sponsors/advertisers you see in Elevation Living. Whenever you are in need of products and services, we ask that you please consider them for your needs. We meet with each of them face-

to-face to ensure the integrity and quality of their business.

YOUR STORIES. YOUR PHO-TOS. YOUR COMMUNITY.

publisher’s note

Whoa! What a month we just had! I don’t think none of us has ever seen anything close to what COVID-19 has done to the world. I hope that everyone is safe and healthy. I think after COVID-19 is said and done, we will appreciate the things that we took for granted and cherish and hold on to them stronger.

I really want to take this moment to shine a light on our sponsors in Elevation Living. As many of you know, a lot of businesses were forced to shut down or reconfigure the way they operate their busi-ness. COVID-19 was nothing that any of us could have predicted at all. As a business owner, it has been like your worst nightmare but with weeks of not waking up. The businesses that you inside of this publication not only stood strong, but they made sure that we were still able to publish Elevation Living, to allow you still share photos and stories through the Cliffs communities. These businesses are truly some of the best in the local area. Many of these businesses were affected a lot personally, emotionally, and financially. You know what? They were bent but they did not break!

Now more then ever is the time to support these local businesses. Now is the time to make sure we all repay them for all they have done for Elevation Living and making sure this publication is possible and to ensure Elevation Living appears in your mailbox every month. I think we owe them something as little as a thank you email. I have always said we need our local businesses and our local businesses need us as well. These are the business that contributes donations to local soccer leagues, churches, founda-tions, golf tournaments, and of course Elevation Living and more!

Two RagamuffinsBy Jill Joyce Resident of Cliffs at Glassy.

In February, my pretty neighbor Sasha, a Ragdoll, was featured. I would like to introduce my brother Fred and myself, Bill.

Fred and I are Ragamuffins, a spin-off of your breed Ragdoll. We are 7 years old and from the same litter. We live at Cliffs at Glassy with our mom (Jill Joyce).

Sounds like our parents think we are very similar, my mom says we are more beautiful on the inside than we are on the outside. I am not certain about that, cuz I think I’m pretty handsome.

Sasha, you are very lucky that your parents let you out in the yard. Fred and I don’t get to go out in the yard. If we did, we would come and visit you.

entirely. “I have written several books and dozens of law review articles, and I am a contributor to Forbes on legal issues. I prob-ably won’t continue with my academic writing, but I’ll continue with Forbes and would like to write another book.”The Krausses began their lives together in Canada. “I was born in New York City but moved to Ontario as a child. Cynthia is a native of Québec,” Michael says. “While we were attending Carleton University in Ottawa, ours was the classic story of struggling newlyweds. One winter, we walked through one of the college’s underground tunnels to our bank to withdraw $20, which was about 10 percent of our account balance. When we returned to our apartment, we realized that we had dropped the money somewhere in the tunnel. We were extremely distraught. We honestly did not know how we would pay for groceries for the month!” But survive they did. They put themselves through law school in Canada, and then Michael completed a second law degree at Yale. They’ve headed South, in stages, ever since.

Indeed, a desire to forever escape shoveling snow was one of the reasons the Krausses were drawn from their Maryland home, where they had lived since 1987, to Keowee Springs. They explored waterfront locations for several years, visiting North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Tennessee. They wanted a place on the water, but without alligators. “With our Labrador Retriever, Toby, that eliminated the Lowcountry,” Michael says. They found Keowee Springs and appreciated all

When Michael and Cynthia Krauss moved to Keowee Springs in Six Mile, South Carolina, many changes await-ed them. Having spent their lives in major American and Canadian cities, they were ready for fewer people, a slower pace, a different landscape, and all four seasons. But there is one thing about their new lives that Mi-chael simply cannot get used to.

Chiggers.

“I was totally unprepared for them,” he laughs. “Those bites last a long time!”It turns out that the occasional larvae bite is their only complaint. “It was a big move for us, given that we had no connection to this area at all,” says Cynthia. “Perhaps the biggest surprise for me was how seamless it all felt, how much at home I felt here from day one.”

Since making the move in 2018, the Krausses have been easing out of their professional lives. Cynthia, an attorney, retired as Vice President of Publishing with the American Health Lawyers’ Association in 2019. “I loved working in the nonprofit world,” she says. “I am still freelancing, writing and editing health law content. I really love having the time to focus on that type of project.”

Her husband is close at her heels. A full professor at the Antonin Scalia Law School at George Mason Univer-sity, and a recipient of the Univer-sity’s “Teacher of the Year” award, Michael is teaching his final courses before a retirement date of June 1. Until recently, he was flying back and forth between South Carolina and Virginia to teach, but the COVID-19 pandemic forced the law school into online instruction. “I really enjoy teaching,” he says, “and doing so re-motely is a big disappointment.” Like Cynthia, he won’t be giving up the law

the area had to offer. “We love to hike and kayak, where Toby turns out to be a great passenger. We love going to Greenville for theater and to shop at the summer Farmers’ Market, and I’ve joined a faculty book club at Clemson. Our religious life is very important to us, and we’ve found a wonderful synagogue in Greenville.”

One very rewarding part of their new life in Ke-owee Springs is their involvement with Meals on Wheels. “When we moved to The Cliffs, we learned that the community supports several charities. We chose to make deliveries for Meals on Wheels in Liberty,” Michael says. “Our faith teaches us that we should give back. We’ve been so blessed in our lives, and others have had rougher roads. Besides,

we’ve made lovely MOW acquaintances who put up with our strange Northern accents!”

So what does the future hold for the Krausses? More time on the lake with Toby, and more time with the friends they’ve made in South Carolina. They enjoy traveling, and if coronavirus cir-cumstances allow, they plan a trip to British Columbia in their camper van later this year. They’re also hoping that their guest

bedrooms get frequented by their daughter (a federal prosecu-tor), her husband, and their three children, and by their son (a former United States Marine officer) and his wife.

“We love the countryside, the peace and quiet, the solitude, and the unstructured days here,” says Cynthia. “We never tire of looking out at Lake Keowee, at the constant stream of wildlife, the sky reflecting on the water as the sun goes down, and Toby

Villa Verona Design A Passion for InteriorsNow, more than ever, homeowners are focusing on their interi-or living space. Whether you’re hosting friends and family or enjoying a quiet night in, your surroundings should be a source of peace and of comfort. Diane Laskoski of Villa Verona Design re-minds homeowners that the inside of their homes is as important as the outside. “Interior design is not a frivolous add-on to our lives,” she says. “Rather, it is the root of how we live.”

Diane and her team at Villa Verona Design have been working with clients in The Cliffs Communities since 2013, creating classic interiors that reflect the attitude, or personal style, of the homeowner. Since opening her firm in South Carolina, her projects have included homes in all Cliffs Communities. Villa Ve-rona is a past recipient of the Southern Home and Garden Bridge Award for Best Overall Design and the Home Builders of South Carolina Pinnacle Award, among others. Diane traces her own interest in interior design to childhood.

“My family has a history in architecture and design,” she says. “My brother is a retired architect in San Jose, California, and I was exposed early to his passion.” Diane followed her passion to Carn-egie Mellon University, receiving a degree in interior architecture.

Her professional career began in her native Pittsburgh. While interning with a prestigious architecture firm, she was exposed to a broad spectrum of specialized areas of design. With her husband, Jerry, she opened her first firm, The Blind Side, in 1987. She is still active in the firm, providing interior design project management and executive leadership. “In 2017, however, we sold our home in Oakmont, Pennsylvania, and became permanent South Carolinians.” she says. “We are in the process of building our new home in Mountain Park.”

The Communities of The Cliffs are defined by the natural beauty of their surroundings, and Diane approaches a project from the perspective of both a design professional and resident. “Villa Verona designers not only evaluate the interior space, but ad-dress the exterior and the surroundings,” she says. “Good design begins by respecting the architecture. One of my pet peeves is when the interior and the exterior are disjointed. You should not be shocked when you enter a space. The mood should be a natural transition.”

Just as the individual communities have their own personalities, Diane and her Villa Verona team understand that each home

environment that will serve all the needs of the client. “It is important that we understand all that embodies our clients' lives,” she says, “and work closely with them to achieve the perfect interior design solutions for the clients and their spaces.”

Villa Verona designers work with clients from the initial concept to the completed proj-ect. Design services include furniture, area rugs, lighting accessories, tile, window treat-ments, kitchen design, bath design, and more. “Our prior-ity on any project is working to achieve the balance of how dollars are allocated to crucial areas,” Diane says.

Interior design is inherently a visual art, and examples of Villa Verona Design’s work can be seen on Facebook, and Houzz. Whether designing a new build or renovating an existing home, Diane and her team work closely with home-owners, bringing their dreams to life.

“We are committed to what we promise,” Diane says. “We are accountable for what we advo-cate, and we are distinctive in how we deliver it.”

The best finish for our pros was Sean Kennedy, Cliffs golf instructor, who shot a blistering 72 on the last day at Turtle Point to finish in 10th place and Julian Bland, head pro at the Falls, who finished in 25th. 2 HOLES-IN-ONE!

Glassy ladies hit holes-in-one back to back!

2 LADIES, resident achievementBy Suzie Grow, Glassy Resident

To hit a hole-in-one is a lifetime achievement, many would say. For two friends to hit a hole in on right after each other, that’s like spotting a unicorn! Cliffs at Glass residents Annette Benning and Sandy Roberts did just that on hole 13 at the Cliffs at Glassy golf course. What makes this even better the two of them didn’t even plan to have an evening of golf together. Here is a couple of comments from Annette Benning: “I was having a bad day. I had signed up to play with Emily White the next morning. In the meantime, Annette had asked me if I wanted to play with her at 1 o’clock. Shortly after that, I received a call from Emily who said she was sick and that she could not play. So I called Annette and said that we were on for the 1 o’clock tea time. Coincidentally, Sandy Roberts saw that we had signed up, so she decided to join us. Just goes to show you, even with all the twists and turns of life,  you never know what a day is going to bring you.”

Congratulations, Annette Benning and Sandy Roberts. This is truly an achievement that the both of you will remember forever.

Who Make a DifferenceCliff Valley Therapy Dogs

By Suzie EihlBy Patty Gibson, Joan Cialdella, Elizabeth Chodkowski, Mary Ellen Bosworth, Jean Hiat, Lisa Fisher, meet the dogs

There are several Cliffs Community dog owners who own a therapy dog. Perhaps you have seen a therapy dog in action while visiting a nurs-ing home or hospital. A therapy dog is not a service dog. Service dogs stay with their person and have special access privileges in public places. Therapy dogs visit and give affection and peace.

Therapy dogs come in all sizes and breeds. The most important char-acteristic of a therapy dog is its temperament. The dog must be very friendly and gentle. Any breed of dog can be trained to provide comfort and affection. Some dogs are enrolled in special programs to become certified and others are trained at home before being becoming certified. It is very important for the dog to be patient and confident. It must be gentle and at ease in all situations. The dog must enjoy human contact and be content to be petted, cuddled, handled and sometimes clumsily, by unfamiliar people. Therapy dogs must enjoy all the attention it receives.

Oscar

The reaction to a visit by a therapy dog brings comfort and happiness to those in nursing homes, hospitals and schools. It makes the dogs happy, too, and they sometimes look like they are smiling, too!

If you are interested in learning more contact The Alliance of Therapy Dogs at [email protected].

Therapy Dogs featured:Tucker is a 2-year-old Golden Retriever. He’s been a certified therapy dog for the last 14 months. Every Tuesday, Tucker can be found at either the Green-ville Place Assisted Living and Memory Care facility on Pelham Road or at Elite Day Care for Adults with Disabilities in Greer. He also visits the Carolina Behavioral Center every other Monday night. He’s a popular diversion at the Christ Church Episcopal School in Greenville at exam time. He’s recently been featured with one of his favorite assisted living facility residents in an article on the benefits of therapy dogs in HealthLinks Upstate magazine.

Chewy (Chewbacca) Cialdella has been a therapy dog since he was 5 years old. In the early days, he made trips to hospitals helping cheer up the patients as well as their families. He has traveled with the CLIFFS Notes since 2013 to var-ious nursing homes, assisting living facilities and senior centers. In his off time, he helps make guests welcome in Vinnie and Joan’s home.

Chewy is a Goldendoodle, 13 years old.

He is currently on a break from ther-apy work as he is undergoing chemo-therapy. He hopes to be back in the saddle soon!

Solo Chodkowski: The Samoyed is an arctic working breed known for its black lips that curl at the corners into the “Samoyed smile.” They were bred in Siberia and worked to pull sleds, keep the Samoyede people warm, and herd reindeer. They are alert, strong, muscular, agile and graceful. They have a heavy double coat which is resistant to weather. Elementary School since 2009. Solo’s job is to work with special needs chil-dren on a one on one basis to help them learn to read. It is a relaxing atmosphere that helps calm the children and allow them to focus on their reading. We worked with two children with selective autism and both of them started to whis-per and talk after being with Solo for a few visits. We have also made several visits to different retirement homes in the area. Solo is a Grand Champion Con-formation dog with a CGCA, Advanced Canine Good Citizen, and titles in cours-ing ability, fast cat, and a tricks title.

Oscar Bosworth: My therapy dog is Oscar a 6-year-old chocolate Labra-doodle who has been a therapy dog for three years. We usually go to Lau-relwood assisted and memory care units twice a month.

Liam Hiatt: My husband, Cliff, and I are natives of Florida. We moved from the Orlando area to The Valley with our golden retriever, Liam, this past Sep-tember, and are year-round residents.

Oscar on the far right

Liam was born on Christmas Day and is 2 years old. He is an English Golden. One of the fea-tures that sets him apart from American Goldens is his cream, almost white, coat.

Liam received his AKC Canine Good Citizen certification while we lived in Florida, and com-pleted the requirements to be a therapy dog through the Alliance of Therapy Dogs (ATD) and a local organization in Greenville, Paws2Care, once we moved here.

We have just started visiting various facilities, but so far, we have been to The Meyer Center for Special Children, Shriners Hospital, and AJ Whittenberg Elementary.

travel tales

Cliffs Members RELAX & REJUVENATEBy Carol Storz and Beverly Zwahlen, Cliffs Springs residents

VISITING THE JEWEL OF THE

Happy Hour

Luxury vacations come in all shapes and sizes but not all are created equal. Are you partial to an exotic sea cruise, perhaps a river cruise on a smaller boat or do you enjoy an all-inclusive luxury resort? Well, recently, Cliffs Springs members Lou and Carol Storz and James and Bever-ly Zwahlen had the opportunity to experience the best of all worlds with a combined land/water vacation in paradise as part of their TradeWinds vacation membership.

Catching a three-and-a-half-hour morning flight out of Charlotte, the friends met up with Lou and Carol’s son, daughter-in-law and another friend to head to Barbados for an overnight layover stop on their way to Mayreau Island.

Mayreau Island is the smallest inhabited island of the Tobago Cays Marine Park in the enchanting St. Vincent and the Grenadines island group which is dubbed by many as the “Jewel of the Caribbean.”

After checking into their ocean-front hotel and a delicious dinner at a nearby restaurant, the traveling companions hit the sack and were lulled to sleep listening to the surf. Next morning bright and early, the group enjoyed a local breakfast and then back to the airport for a short 40-minute flight via SVG/Grenadine Airways on a Sea Otter aircraft to Canouan Island.   Unfortunately, small airlines don’t adhere to a strict

schedule and lengthy airport seating isn’t the most comfortable. Enough said on that.

Eventually, the group arrived on Canouan Island after a brief discharge of passengers and stomach-dropping landing on Union Island. Happy to be so close to this long-awaited adven-ture, all still had smiles on their faces when they left the airport and were taken to the TradeWinds base office and then via water transport to their final destination, Mayreau Island.

The happy travelers were informed that they would be spending the first half of the week onboard the NOW, a luxury lagoon catamaran yacht with four staterooms complete with en-suite baths. After introductions to the Captain and first mate complete with welcome cocktails and refreshments, the group knew immediately that this trip was going to be special.

The next three days were spent un-winding and rejuvenating—sailing to secluded cays and lagoons, socializing with each other and the crew, swim-ming with turtles, snorkeling over cor-al gardens, diving on a historic wreck, oh and did I mention three gourmet meals a day plus snacks, wine, island cocktails? Can it get any better?

Wednesday was “changeover” day and the group disembarked the yacht and tendered to Tribu Villas, the TradeWinds owned secluded and private five-star luxury resort. After being shown to their private access luxury suites by the captain and first mate they were then introduced to the resident chef and butler who were in-tent on looking after their every need.

The villa was designed so that each suite opens on to a pavilion-style group

gathering area with a dining section, various seating spaces and freshwater pools. The configuration offered both privacy and comfort. Attention to detail was apparent, from the beauti-fully landscaped gardens leading down to a gorgeous white sandy beach with stunning views of the Caribbean to the plunge and infinity pools overlooking the secluded lagoon.

Never running out of things to do, some days called for an island hike to a hilltop with wonderful views of the Cay or a visit to the lovely, quaint and historic stone and brick Catholic church built in 1917 then onto Salt-whistle Bay, a must on the schedule to do a little shopping and getting to know some friendly locals. To experi-ence some real island color a visit to Robert’s Place and meeting long-time inhabitant and business owner “Righ-Righteous Robert

dragonfliesnature’s corner

A Cool-Looking Insect with a Cool Name

By Carol Storz, Keowee Springs Resident and SC Master Naturalist

One of the best charac-teristics of a dragonfly is that they like to eat annoying insects like mosquitoes, biting flies, gnats and wasps. A single dragonfly can eat 30 to hundreds of mos-quitoes per day, making them natural mosquito control. Dragonflies only

eat prey that they catch while flying. To catch their prey, dragon-flies create a basket with their legs, they then swoop in capturing their prey with their legs and biting it to hold it in place. They will often eat what they have caught while they are still in flight. A dragonfly can open its mouth as wide as its entire head. They are efficient hunters and have a 95% success rate in killing their prey.

Predators that eat dragonflies include fish, ducks, birds and water beetles. In Indonesia, dragonflies are considered a delicious snack. In Japan, a dragonfly symbolizes courage, strength and happiness. It is said if a dragonfly lands on your head it is consid-ered good luck.

Dragonflies are often mistaken for Damselflies and visa versa. Both insects share many characteristics, including membra-nous wings, large eyes, slender bodies and small antennae. Dragonflies, in general, are studier with thicker bodies, while damselflies have longer, thinner bodies. The easiest way to tell the difference is to observe the position of their wings at rest. Dragonflies hold their wings open, perpendicular to their bodies (like an airplane). Damselflies hold their wings up and together across the top of their backs.

Want to attract dragonflies and damselflies to your yard? Install a small pond or even a wood half-barrel. Dragonflies are attracted to water and breed in shallow areas. Also add water plants such as pondweed, water lilies or lotus flowers to give the dragonflies a place to lay their eggs. But avoid putting fish in your pond as fish eat dragonfly larvae.

Fascinated by dragonflies? Visit the Dragonfly Sanctuary Pond in Albuquerque, New Mexico, home to an amazing diversity of dragonfly and damselfly species.

Everyone should have an insect icon and the dragonfly is my bug. I have dragonfly yard ornaments, a dragonfly door knocker, drag-onflies on my house numbers, dragonfly stationary, a dragonfly bed comforter and not to mention personal items with dragonflies imprinted or embroi-

dered like slacks, tops, socks, jewelry and even a purse or two. I even belong to the Facebook group; I Love Dragonflies.

Dragonflies have been around for over 300 million years and other than being just cool looking insects with a cool name, drag-onflies are fascinating creatures. They resemble tiny fighter jets, fierce-looking but also beautiful and fascinating.

Dragonflies are agile and fast fliers reaching speeds of over 30 miles per hour! They can hover, fly straight up and down, side-ways, forward and backward, they can even fly upside-down and even mate in midair. In fact, the flight of a dragonfly is so efficient that this insect was the inspiration for the development of heli-copters and drones.

Dragonflies have two sets of wings that can work independently and six legs although they do not walk very well. Dragonflies have very interesting compound eyes. Their large, round eyes are made up of about 30,000 lenses, giving them good eyesight and allowing them to see in many different directions almost 360 degrees. Dragonflies can even see ultraviolet light.

Dragonflies are one of the most colorful insects coming in a variety of hues including blue, green, yellow and red. Dragonflies have sharp mandibles but can’t bite humans nor do they have the ability to sting.

When first hatched, most dragonfly larva or nymphs live in the water for up to five years. Once they leave the water and begin to fly, generally most only live about a few weeks although some species are reported to live up to five months.

Fire Departmentmaking a difference

Glassy Mountain

Three Communities of Cliffs Volunteers in “The Dark Corner”

By Sandy Smith, Cliffs Glassy resident

GMFD logo

Since its founding 30 years ago, the Glassy Mountain Fire Department relies heavily on volunteers to aid their full-time staff. There have been many Cliffs residents who have volunteered since those first days and many have retired. Currently, there are Volunteer Firefighters from two Cliffs communities serv-ing the GMFD service area plus another six Cliffs residents on the Board of Commissioners from three Cliffs communities.

Fire Chief Robert Staples shared how important volunteers are to the depart-ment, “We count on volunteers who are available during the day. It’s a real ben-efit to give back to the community in a way that’s different and you are helping people during one of their worst times, on their worst day.”

The entire GMFD district covers 52 square miles in northern Greenville County known as the heart of “The Dark Corner.” Coverage includes the Heritage areas as well as Cliffs at Glassy, Cliffs Valley and most of Cliffs at Mountain Park.

Pinnacle Mountain Fire

There are five stations spread across the district in-cluding the main Headquarter Station #34 on Hwy. 11 and the Beaver Dam Road Station #35 near Cliffs Valley and Cliffs at Mountain Park.

The district’s total staff includes eleven career firefighters, nine part-time firefighters, 18 EMTs, 16 Paramedics, and 6 EMRs. Approximately 35 of these are volunteer firefighters, cadets or first

Howard Road Fire

responders. With a full-time staff of three per 24-hour shift, vol-unteers become an important component because it takes 10 to 15 people per emergency call for optimum coverage.

Currently, volunteerism is active as represented by Cliffs at Glassy and Cliffs Valley. The Cliffs at Glassy Volunteer Fire-fighters are: Lt. Ron Messer; Mark Smith; Gerald Gaige; and John Daniels. And the Volunteer Firefighters from Cliffs Valley include: Mark Shaver; Stuart Safft; and Bob Otto.

Six more Cliffs residents across three Cliffs communities also serve on the GMFD Board of Commissioners. They are: Jim

White (Glassy); Bill Atkins (Glassy); Bob Caseo (Mountain Park); Carl Roed (Valley); Dick Dusa (Valley); and Dwight Hammack (Valley).

The GMFD volunteer staff provides a real value for all the district communities served. Actual volunteer hours for the 2019 calen-

dar year were 12,848 with a valuation of $326,725 to achieve the same level of service provided by the department. Many residents may be unaware that The Insurance Service Office (ISO) has given the GMFD service area a Class 3 Rating – the highest rating for a rural fire department. That’s a real plus

Palmetto Pleaters meet on the fourth Thursday of the month at 6:3:30–8:00 p.m. at Caine Halter Family YMCA, 721 Cleveland St., Greenville. They welcome anyone who is interested in needle handiwork or would like infor-mation about their organization.

Introducing The

Smocking Arts Guild The purpose of the Smocking Arts Guild of America is to preserve and foster the art of smocking and related needlework for future generations.

You have probably never heard of the Smocking Arts Guild of America or SAGA. The first gathering of nine ladies in Gatlinburg was in 1979. All of them were interested in forming a guild for smocking and related handiwork and that’s how SAGA started. It has now grown into an international organization. SAGA now covers four areas, Smocking, Fine Hand Sewing, Fine Machine Sewing and Embroidery.

Two Cliffs Valley residents, Shirley Rossi and Dana Woolridge, belong to Palmetto Pleaters, the local Greenville chapter of SAGA. They are active members of SAGA’s Wee Care Program which was established in 1986. Through the Wee Care Program members sew and smock simple bishop-style baby gowns and donate them to local hospitals to clothe babies who die at birth or shorty thereafter. For a parent holding a dying baby, their sorrow is often overwhelming. At many hospi-tals across the country, comfort comes in the form of small gowns lovingly smocked by SAGA members. The gowns are used almost exclusively for babies that have died or are going to die. The gowns can cover tubes and medical equipment so parents can see their babies perfect and dressed in a sweet little gown. Sometimes the parents keep the gowns as a keepsake and other times the babies are buried in the gown. It is often the only parenting they get to do for their babies. Many hospitals request gowns for their neo-natal units for preemie babies that survive and have extended hospital stays. These gowns are in prints and brighter colors and are used on a daily basis.

The Wee Care Program is the most visible service of the Palmetto Pleaters. The simple gowns, bon-nets, blankets and other items are donated to the Prisma Hospital System and St. Francis Hospital for premature and critically ill infants.

This June the Palmetto Pleaters are sponsoring a fundraiser in the form of an American Girl Doll raf-

fle. “Jocelyn Kendrick,” aka Joss, is the American Girl Doll for 2020. Joss is 18” tall with brown eyes, long layered brown hair and sun-kissed highlights. Joss is a fierce surfer girl who never

BIRTHDAY PARTY!

By Sandy Krug, Vineyards residents

Do you have a special achievement that you want to highlight? Send it to us at [email protected].

HAPPY st 21Anne and Spirit

Wow, what a birthday bash! Beer, carrots, apples, and molasses treats…no, not your ordinary fair, and not your ordinary birthday party. On March 6, Spirit turned 21 and his closest friends, Rio and Rayna, joined him at a party in his honor.

By the way, Spirit is a gray Missouri Fox Trotter who lives at the Equestrian Center in The Cliffs at Keowee Vineyards along with his friends, Rio, a sorrel Foundation Quarter horse, and Rayna, a chestnut Thoroughbred/Quarter horse cross. They, along with their

owners, Anne Howard, Natalie Putman, and Sandy Krug respective-ly are normally seen together on the trails of the Vineyards and the adjacent DNR property enjoying the ride and the beautiful scenery.

On Friday, March 6, Spirit, (who Anne affectionately calls her soul mate of 18 years) turned 21 and we thought it only appropriate to celebrate the occasion.   After a nice grooming at the barn, we tacked up and rode through the park then up the back road to Eastatoe Parkway. After ex-ploring the neighborhood (and depositing a horse’s normal calling card,

In addition to enjoying his time with his friends at the Equestrian Center, Spirit is often hired by wedding professionals for couples who want a horse as part of their ceremony.

Come see these three friends and more at the Vineyards Derby Day celebration.   There will be a parade of all of our breeds in the barn, a Derby Day hat contest for the ladies and a Dapper Dan competition for the gents, not to mention the Kentucky Der-by race drinks and hors d’oeuvres.

which is great for fertilizing the parkway…) we stopped at Krugs’ for refreshments of the adult type...after all, Spirit just became legal!

Ted Krug hosted and both Jeff Putman and Lynn Howard came to join the party. The wine was the choice of the riders and spouses and Spirit did get his beer. For those of you who may worry about that, beer is often prescribed by veterinarians for some equine ailments…and they really like it! All the four-footed friends got carrots, apples and sweet treats and a good time was had by all.

PatioPersonalized Outdoor LivingFlavor

sponsor spotlightBy Diane Irving, Staff Writer

Just as The Cliffs embrace the bound-less nature that surrounds their seven Carolina Mountain communities, Elevation Living sponsor PatioFlavor savors the Carolina outdoors. Based on Main Street in Travelers Rest, SC, this specialty retailer offers quality outdoor living furnishings and acces-sories that range from the practical to the unique while supporting local craftsmen and serving the community that surrounds them.

An offshoot of Cliffs Valley resident Des Sinclair’s Deeco Metals business, PatioFlavor is managed by his daugh-ter, Carrie Sinclair. With its roots in South Africa, the Sinclair family has an inveterate love of outdoor living. It was only natural that Des and Carrie seized the opportunity to combine the personal and professional to offer Car-olina outdoor enthusiasts high-quality outdoor products at factory-direct prices. By nurturing relationships with local craftsmen and a savvy business acumen, PatioFlavor has developed a line of products that exceeds expec-tations in both the upstate’s outdoor aesthetic and affordability.

Now in business for their fourth year, PatioFlavor’s guiding principle is per-sonalized service, an element often

neglected in today’s retail and e-commerce markets. In addition to their versatile and unique product lines like floor coverings made from recycled plastic and hand-woven baskets, they offer wicker and powdered coated furnishings, customizable locally crafted cedar furniture, a full line of premium indoor/outdoor pillows and cushions, outdoor accessories, fire elements, and a personalized 3D design/floor plan service which help clients bring the vision for their ideal outdoor living space to life.

Carrie Sinclair shared her perspective on what makes the PatioFlavor experience unique. “Having grown up with a passion for nature and the great outdoors, managing PatioFlavor is a perfect career fit, combining my background in graphic design with products that enhance outdoor living for my family, as well as our business clients. We love all that outdoor living has to offer, especially in the beautiful surroundings of upstate South Carolina. I know what enhances my family’s backyard will most likely be of interest to our customers as well. The best investment we can make is to inventory or source products that meet our customer’s needs. That investment helps us to build a relationship with our customers founded on trust. Our clients then feel confident enough in PatioFlavor’s product and staff to make subsequent purchases or refer a friend. We design with them in mind.”

PatioFlavor scours the market for unique and versatile products to enhance and compliment any outdoor living space. “From waterproof out-door art to fire features including fire pits (gas or wood-burning), outdoor fireplaces and kitchens and custom-izable seating, we strive to be a com-prehensive, full-service outdoor re-tailer,” says General Manager Carrie Sinclair. “If we don’t inventory it, we can source it or connect with a trade partner to assist our customers in achieving their outdoor design goals. We have a network of local trade partners in complementary fields such as ‘design to build’ landscape architects, deck and patio contractors and custom pool builders.”

Being a full-service retailer isn’t just about day-to-day business for this spe-cialty retailer. PatioFlavor is driven by building community locally and abroad. Carrie explained, “We love contrib-uting to our neighborhood through sponsoring events like the Travelers Rest Art Crawl, the Annual Greenville Healthcare System Swamp Rabbit 5K and FREE community gatherings at Trailblazer Park, but we are globally and charity-minded as well. We are proud to carry products that help end child labor worldwide, as well as donat-ing to local charities like Cliffs Valley CRO which supports upstate children in need. We are currently forging a relationship with the new principal of Travelers Rest High School to discover ways to partner and support the staff and families they serve.”

With a corporate mission to become full service, PatioFlavor is estab-lishing business partnerships that mutually benefit and enhance each organization. Partners such as RSH Décor & White Rabbit Fine Art Gallery now advertise jointly with PatioFlavor in Elevation Living, providing Cliffs’ residents with an expanded range of customizable products and personal service. RSH Décor brings more than 26 years of

textile craftsmanship to the team. Sourcing quality performance fabrics that will stand the test of time, their textile professionals build premium and innovative seating and accents that will enhance any setting. nourishment, an education and love. “When our son Max was born with special needs,” explains Stephanie, “we were told he would never walk or talk, but God gave him the strength to defeat the odds. We pray that the millions of enslaved children in India will also have an opportunity to overcome their seemingly hopeless circumstances.”

Having seen the power of prayer first-hand, the McChesneys believe that God guided each step that led them to Set Free. Because the ministry is so closely aligned with their own faith and passion for children, in addition to their personal giving, the McChesneys plan to begin sending part of Skin by Stephanie’s profits to Set Free this year.

“Steve and I feel privileged to help provide these children with hope through Jesus,” says Stepha-nie. “We are so excited to see the lives that will be changed in India through the prayer, love, and support of Skin by Stephanie.”

To support the McChesneys’ efforts on behalf of Set Free, call 864-314-2417 or visit Skin-byStephanie.com to make an appointment at Skin by Stephanie.

About Set FreeThere are more people enslaved in India than any-where in the world. Set Free’s mission is to provide freedom, which entails more than simply rescuing children. They also aim to reunite rescued children with their families, educate for a bright future, and ul-timately equip each rescued child to become a disciple of Jesus Christ. Learn more at setfreealliance.org.

Stephanie and Steve McChesney, founders of Skin by Stephanie – an exclusive clinical skincare alternative to cosmetic surgery – have used their talent and success in a very special way. From the very beginning, more than 25 years ago,

Stephanie and Steve established Skin by Stephanie with their faith in mind.

Stephanie McChesney began her career in Charleston, South Carolina, as an aesthetician in plastic surgery offices; it was here that she became determined to find an alternative to invasive cos-metic surgery. This fateful decision took her to Miami, Florida, where she learned from the world’s leading experts in skincare and quickly earned a top spot as head aesthetician at one of the world’s most prestigious spa destinations: the Doral Saturnia Terme Di Saturnia. Through these formative experiences and her own cutting-edge research, Stephanie began developing Science Ceuticals, a line of products offering the highest standard of age-defying and corrective care available. As her career at the forefront of the field progressed, her commitment to educating women on alternatives to invasive cosmetic care only grew.

When the McChesneys returned to South Carolina, making their home in Upstate Greenville, they began attending Brookwood Church, which acquainted them with an organization called “Set Free” that rescues enslaved Dalit children who are forced to mine rock quarries in India. Here they felt their faith come to life as God led their hearts to become a part of the ministry’s special mission to provide rescued slaves with a safe place to call home,

The Cliffs Valley

Featuring Ott Jones, Bronze Sculptor-Artist

Photos by Mark EckerlingWritten by Annette Godow of the Valley

The Cliffs Valley Insight Series had a special treat on February 5, 2020, when Mr. Ott Jones presented several beautiful bronze sculptures that he brought to us all the way from his home in Bozeman, Montana. Mr. Jones has been a professional bronze sculptor for 30 years in Montana where he works and lives with his wife and four children. His artistry is inspired by his fascination with his wildlife subjects and his passion for the great outdoors. As a boy in Spokane, Washington, his interest in art, wildlife, and outdoor adventure was kindled by his hiking, fishing, and bird hunting experiences with his father (and subsequently with his own children).

In his presentation, we were exposed to a variety of incredibly lifelike sculptures of birds, fishes, grizzly bears, cattle, and hunting dogs in their natural habitats. His composi-tions of great blue herons, pelicans, hummingbirds, and ducks in flight were exquisite and so graceful. His sculptures exhibit powerful compo-sitions with striking textures and subtly colored patinas. Mr. Jones has placed 47 life-size and monumental sculptures across the nation.

Not only were we exposed to these wondrous sculptures, but Mr. Jones also explained the lengthy and com-plex process of creating these works

Insight Series

of art. In the beginning, Mr. Jones studies his subjects out-of-doors (often in Yellowstone Park) and takes photographs. Then he draws an example of what he wants the sculpture to capture. Before actually molding the subject in clay, he builds an arma-ture, a structure that is capable of holding the clay in position and supporting its weight. Once the clay model is completed (requiring four to six months), the structure is broken down into parts that can be molded into ceramic shells and prepared for the pouring of molten bronze (a multi-stepped, “Lost Wax” process). The bronze pieces are then reassembled and prepared for the final process of subtle coloring with the application of different pigments that create patinas.

If you wish to know more about Mr. Jones’ outstanding sculptures, visit his web site: ottjones.com.

stuffed with crab imperialGrilled over a wood fire in our indoor kitchen fireplace

Troutresident recipeBy Wilson Taylor, Cliffs Valley resident

Our historic home in Waterford, Virginia, had a large fireplace in the kitchen which we used frequently.  It had a cast-iron colonial fire-back.

In colonial times, the primary purpose of a fire-back was to protect the fireplace brick and mortar from breaking down from the heat of fires over time.

I love calves liver. My grandmother used to make it for me when I was a child growing up in Indiana. Several times I tried to cook liver as an adult in Waterford. Although doing so brought back fond memories; unfortunately, the consequences invariably were unpleasant!

Carolyn, my wife, threw a complete cow fit each time, as the “offensive” odor permeated the house.

Over time I came up with a solution to the problem…I would somehow cook the liver over wood coals in the fire-place using a grill rack from my outdoor smoker,in combination with the colonial fire-back. The result was actually far superior to cooking he liver in a pan on the electric stove.

Carolyn had no clue that I had cooked the “smelly” liver in the house. All traces of any odor were sucked up and out the chimney flue.

My indoor grilling technique was perfected over time; we frequently cooked a variety of items in the kitchen fire-place while in Waterford.

While building our house on the mountain at the Cliffs Valley, we custom designed a raised hearth wood-burning fireplace for cooking in the new kitchen. It also incorporat-ed a colonial fire-back for grilling.

Our fire-back, although decorative, also allows a cooking grill to be canto-le-vered over the wood fire at its base. The grill is adjustable so that the food can be raised or lowered, as needed, above the coals burning in the grate below.

One of my favorite recipes is whole butterflied trout stuffed with crab imperial grilled over an applewood fire.

Take a whole blue trout with the skin on; clean and butterfly it, remove the bones—not an easy task. I generally also remove the head so as not to offend the squeamish. Brush the skin with Chinese oyster sauce, fresh micro-planed garlic, and sesame oil. Stuff the inside of the trout with crab imperial.

The crab imperial is a perfect complement to the delicate flesh of the trout.

The stuffed fish is placed in a hinged grill basket so that once finished on one side it can be easily turned over to cook the other. Also, it holds the stuffing tightly in the trout while grilling.

The cooking process is somewhat precise; however, unpredictable in terms of time...the coals must be just right…and the cooking process must be watched

closely to ensure that the trout skin is nicely crisped up on both sides, while gently cooking the delicate trout flesh, and warming the crab imperial inside.

Encourage your guests to eat the delectable, crispy skin.

We frequently grill in the kitchen fireplace. Some other favorite recipes:Pork tenderloin with a blueberry chipotle sauceTomahawk pork chops with a maple glazeCornish game hens with a Gran Marnier orange sauceOf course, assorted fish, steaks, lamb chops, etc.

Godwin Lightning

Protection, LLC Safety. Reliability. Peace of Mind.

By Diane Irving, Staff Writer

The destruction caused by a lightning

strike is something that Kyle Godwin,

owner of Godwin Lightning Protec-

tion, LLC, has experienced firsthand.

When lightning struck Kyle’s child-

hood home, it was so powerful it blew

the chimney off his house and de-

stroyed appliances. Kyle’s past expe-

rience isn’t an uncommon occurrence.

In the last year, at least 15 homes

have caught fire in North and South

Carolina due to lightning strikes. The

Cliffs have not been immune to light-

ning damage. A few years ago, a home

in The Cliffs burned down from a

sudden strike. The Cliffs’ golf courses

have also lost pumps due to lightning

costing thousands to repair. On sever-

al occasions, Kyle has been called out

to The Cliffs golf courses for assis-

tance. It can be costly and happen to

anyone, so it’s best to be prepared.

In fact, the destruction caused by

lightning strikes in the United States

exceeds five billion annually! Addi-

tionally, the Lightning Protection

Institute reports that South Carolina

ranks in the Top 10 with 14.6 strikes

per square mile.

From high-rise buildings to trees, lightning protection systems need to be custom

designed for the structure it’s protecting. The typical design for a residential

installation is a network of conductive cabling, copper or aluminum wire, which

depends on the roofing materials. Then, they’re tied to air terminals (lightning

rods) and grounding electrodes. Kyle explains, “When a system is in place and

takes a direct strike the lightning conductor redirects the charge into the ground,

dissipating the harmful current.” With multiple LPI certified installers on staff,

Godwin Lightning Protection, LLC, can accommodate all client’s protection

needs. There is no better time to install a lightning protection system than during

new construction, where all cabling can be hidden in the interior of the home.

However, existing homes can still be protected by the installation of wire compo-

nents on the roof. Although the copper components will be visible at first, they

will oxidize over time and blend in with the roofing material. Godwin Lightning

Protection, LLC, offers a wide range of decorative lightning rods for those who

desire an added aesthetic, and every system is installed with the 15 years of expe-

rience, knowledge and expertise Kyle brings to the greater Greenville area.

Kyle was born and raised just below the Mason-Dixon Line in Maryland. He

attended and played football at Towson University in Baltimore. During summers,

he worked at his best friend’s dad’s lightning protection company starting out as

a laborer. After college, he worked in the trade and advanced to become the lead

designer and project manager. Kyle is certified with the Lightning Protection Insti-

tute (LPI) as a Master Installer/Designer and is an approved installation company

with Underwriter Laboratories (UL). In 2016, he established his firm down south.

Kyle shares how he ended up in the upstate, “I researched the area and saw there

was a need for a skilled and reliable lightning protection firm.” Since he began, he’s

provided quality service for notable projects including Augusta National Golf Club,

Grand Bohemian Hotel in Greenville, SC, Bastin Hall at The Citadel, and Rolling

Green Assisted Living in Greenville, SC, and Volvo in Charleston, SC.

The company’s slogan is “Use the

best to prepare for the worst.” It’s

never a bad idea to take extra pre-

cautions. Godwin Lightning Pro-

tection, LLC, is good at what they

do and have a good standing with

homeowners. The level of customer

service even causes client’s hair to

stand up! Read a few client reviews

that are positive in charge:

Custom Homes: “Kyle and the crew

were great to work with. They fol-

lowed up on appointments that were

scheduled, arrived and completed

the job as planned. I would recom-

mend them and look forward to using

them in the future.”

Brent and Belinda F.: “Godwin

edgeable and courteous, having dis-

creetly and professionally installed

a lightning protection system on our

the system holds up to a strike, but I have peace of mind knowing that we’ve

done what we can to protect our home during the severe SC thunderstorms.

Highly recommended.”

Richard B.: “After researching several companies, I decided to have Godwin

install lightning protection on my home. Their price was reasonable, the time

frame for installation fit my schedule and their installers were professional. Al-

though I wish I was able to have the installation done during the construction

of my home that was not possible. The installers made every attempt at hiding

the cables from view. Overall, we’re pleased with the results. I recommend this

company to anyone considering lightning protection.”

Davis AudiologyRediscovering The Sound Of Life And Loved Ones With Experts That Care

By Diane Irving

Doctor of Audiology Kristin Davis loves listening to live music and helping pa-tients re-discover the amazing sound of life. She had her eye on the traditional medical field until she heard about audi-ology. It was the perfect profession that allowed her to give back to the commu-nity without the invasive intrusions. In business for 10 years, word of mouth has traveled throughout the community, inspiring new locations. With three offices opening within three years, its loud and clear patients are improving their communication situation with experts that care.

At the heart of South Carolina, Dr. Davis grew up outside of Columbia and attended the University of South Carolina for business marketing. While in college, Dr. Davis met her husband, Christopher. They’ve been married for 20 years and have three kids. Being service-oriented, she got introduced to an audiology special project while pursuing her bachelor’s degree at the University of South Carolina. Once she discovered she could change people’s lives, she was hooked. This led her to complete her master’s degree at the University of Memphis and her doctor-ate at Arizona School of Health Scienc-es in the field of Audiology. Four years ago, she bought a building in Greenville and changed her business name to Davis Audiology. Business boomed so fast, it split into three locations with the other two in Simpsonville and Spartan-burg. Her favorite activities outside of healing are spending time with family and watching her kids compete in swim meets. Whenever she gets the chance,

Kristin Davis

she goes to concerts. Anytime the weather warms up, the Davises laze on the beach and listen to waves. Their favorite spots are Hilton Head and St. Augus-tine. Other travel destinations they adore are Alaska, the west coast and European trips!

The private practice is a full-service and full-di-agnostic center for hearing. After a hearing test,

doctors can determine what the patient needs. If they require a co-chlear implant evaluation, a standard hearing aid, a tinnitus (ringing in the ear) evaluation or aid or personalized earplugs for musicians for noise protec-tion, Davis Audiology provides hearing solutions. Dr. Davis explains the differ-ence. “You become apart of the Davis Audiology family. Your issues become our top priority. The level of care is above and beyond any other place you can go to the Upstate.” Hearing loss is the third most common related health problem and Dr. Davis is passionate about educating the community. Hear-ing loss can be intertwined with other health issues, including cardiovascu-lar (blood flow and supply), diabetes, and cognition and individuals have a higher risk for falls. At The Cliffs, her team provides hearing screenings and hearing aid services so neighborhood residents can ensure safety and have convenient access to care. Dr. Davis mentions, “It can sneak up on you. It’s just as important as getting your teeth and eyes checked.” To further learning, Davis Audiology hosts aural rehab sem-inars, classes on health topics, Upstate hearing meet-up groups, social gather-ings and support groups. On the fourth Thursday of each month, individuals gather in the office from 2 p.m.–4 p.m. to listen to a health presentation. They don’t have to be patients and benefit seniors ages 55 and up.

Dr. Davis describes what it means to her. “It’s about the patient, not the hearing aid and to improve their communication situation. We’re here

“to help them on that journey.” The price doesn’t just include the device; it sustains lifetime care. Additional-ly, all checks ups, batteries, supplies and testing on the current hearing aid are included. As a leader, she displays a high level of dedication by advocating for better patient rights with SC Academy of Audiology (was president of the organization in 2012). Recently, she was elected to serve on the Board of Doctors of Audiology National and has won a leadership award from the American Hearing Aid Association. Dr. Davis shares the personal reward. “You can’t put a price tag on it. It’s like no other feeling to change that person’s life and the family’s life. They can reconnect and re-engage with each other. That’s what life is all about.”

With a perfect score on Google re-views, it’s understandable why Davis Audiology has reached the ears of locals. One Cliffs resident sings their professional praises:

Byron Mull: “I realized that to improve my quality of life, I needed medical help for my auditory disability. I attended a very informative seminar and thereafter made an appointment to have a hearing test, and be fitted for hearing aids. I was amazed to be able to hear so many sounds that had been lost in silence. The professionals at Davis Audiology continue to provide me with very caring and effective med-ical service for my hearing loss. They provide me with training in using and maintaining my hearing aids, answer

all my questions, provide me with needed supplies, and check my hearing frequently through-out the year — all in a very friendly, professional and efficient manner.”Devotion extends outside of the office for all staff. “We volunteer out in the community. We do mission trips for hearing loss in Haiti or Kentucky.” In the next 18–24 months, Dr. Davis reveals she hopes to expand to the Seneca region. “The plan is to be more accessible so peo-ple don’t have to travel too far.”

Duane Leet:Genealogy Mastermind Part 2

Previously: In 1978, I learned that the person I thought was my grand-mother (MawMaw) was really my great aunt. My grandfather (PawPaw) was her husband, not related to me. MawMaw gave me two pictures. One was of MawMaw’s family: consisting of two brothers and two sisters. The other was of a couple: my maternal grandfather, Virgil Patton and my real maternal grandmother named Ruth. They didn’t know Ruth’s last name.  That was all I was given at the time. When I got home and quizzed my fa-ther, I learned that the story was that Virgil, in a fit of anguish after an oil field accident that killed his brother, had killed Ruth and committed suicide. My father didn’t volunteer when that was, except that my mother was young. He told me there was a brother, who was called DeeDee. All he knew was that the brother probably ended up in California in the film industry.

(I should stop here and say that both MawMaw and my father knew more of the story than they let on. I think they were all embarrassed by the events.  Unfortunately, both Maw-Maw and PawPaw died within a year of my last visit.)

So, I was left to find out what happened and who my grandmother was. Decades passed without find-ing out much. I was busy raising a family, working at IBM on lead-ing-edge technology, serving on the local school board, and singing in local choral groups. Plus, the internet was being populated with

information, but ancestry information, such as birth certificates, marriage records, and census data didn’t reach a critical mass until the 21st century.

During those 20-plus years, I did find my mother’s birth certificate in some of my father’s stuff when I was moving him from one place to another. I think the move was from Denver to Raleigh. Raleigh would turn out to be important to my mother’s ancestry, but it would take another decade to “break down the brick wall.”

About the birth certificate: Although the rule in genealogy is that birth certificates are prima-ry sources, I’ve learned that that should not be “the” rule; perhaps a better description would be “a guideline.” I have discovered that my mother’s birth certificate was a complete fake. First of all, it had MawMaw as her mother and PawPaw as her father. We know that is wrong. The certificate my mother had was one that was created well after her birth. In Oklahoma, or should I say Michigan, because that was where my mother forged the certificate, one can get a birth certificate well after birth if you present proof of birth from two of several sources. In my mother’s case, she presented the family bible, where MawMaw had entered her as her daughter, and a school principal sworn statement stating who her mother and father were. If you know the school principal, well, you get whatever document you want. My mother need-ed a birth certificate for some reason in late 1945, while she was in Michigan waiting for my father to come back from the war. He was the administrator for a region in southwest Ger-

resident achievementBy Duane Leet, PhD, Cliffs Glassy Resident

many centered around Stuttgart. So, she forged one. It was only recent-ly that I realized that the certificate was in her handwriting!

Occasionally over those 20-plus years, I would search for Virgil Patton on the internet and in an-cestry.com, among other sites. The only thing I came up with, late in that

timeframe, was census data. For example, the 1920 census:

So, Virgil was still single, living at home. The census said he was a garage mechanic. My mother was born in 1922, at least all the information I had said that was the case. (I should mention that her birthday on her birth certificate was February 14, Valentine’s Day. My father told me, about a year before he died at age 98, that her birthday was really February 13; my mother just liked the idea of being born on Valentine’s day.)  Therefore, the mar-riage might have/probably did happen sometime around 1921.

I found a 1930 census on MawMaw and PawPaw searching on their last name, Tilley:

Some interesting facts from this census. Oscar Tilley, PawPaw, rented his house for $20 a month, had a radio, and, off to the right, out of the picture, he was the foreman for an oil company. By the way, if I had seen this before I was told that MawMaw and PawPaw were not my grandmother and grandfather, this census entry would have told me. The three-state entries for Dortha A (where did they get that name?) are Oklahoma, for Dorothy’s birth state, Oklahoma for Gertha’s birth state, and Oklahoma for Oscar’s birth state. Yet Oscar entered his birth state as Illinois (Illinois). Oscar’s entry doesn’t match Dorothy’s father’s entry. And, by the way, Gertha was born in Texas, not Oklahoma. And Glayden was not the twin of Dorothy, implied by the age entered for the two kids.

Lesson learned over and over through 40+ years at this: As a genealogist, one has to treat census data not as a primary docu-ment, but a guideline…a plausible fact.

In time, I found a copy of MawMaw and PawPaw’s Bible in my father’s stuff. I had seen the bible in Oklahoma at various times, but I had not seen the following page. (See Photo 3)

This was clearly written after my mother’s death. It is interesting that whoever entered it didn’t know how to spell my mother’s name, Dorothy Juanita Patton.   Note the birth date. From this, I had a last name for my maternal great grandmother, Louden. Searches on that name at the time were fruitless. Now I had a marriage date: February 28, 1921.

I did find some things out about the Patton family ancestry. Work-ing back in time, they were in Texas for one generation and then in Oklahoma for the last generation. Prior to that, in the Civil War era, they lived in Gentry County, MO.   Prior to that, in the Revolu-tionary War period, the Pattons lived in Pennsylvania, which would be right for Scots-Irish. On the maternal side: Howe, McNatt, Bell, they migrated from South Carolina to Tennessee. Those families had originally immigrated from Scotland/Ireland to Pennsylvania but had migrated almost immediately to South Carolina very early in the 18th century. I found I was a Son of the Revolution several times over through both the maternal and fraternal sides. Here is documentation on one of these ancestors: (see photo 4)

Another ancestor was Colonel Joseph Howe. (That family’s burial ground is up around Flat Rock.) Here is an excerpt from an SC history of the time: (see photo 5)

Genealogy makes history personal. I didn’t know that South Caro-lina was the first colony to set up a formal opposition government!

The brick wall with respect to my mother’s maternal side was breached about 10 years ago. In retrospect, I could have gone to Oklahoma and, after a considerable amount of time, found the documents I needed on some microfilm in a county or town stor-age area, but, as I said, I didn’t have that kind of time.

About the time the 1940 census data was released online, which was in 2010, Oklahoma released a mass of digitized records from the 1920s. During one of my occasional blind searches for anything Virgil Patton, a wedding certificate popped up in the results. (see photo 6)

This confirmed the wedding date in MawMaw and PawPaw’s bible, and my grandmother’s maiden name looked like Loud-en. An internet search on Louden found nothing that would correspond to Ruth. But around the same time, another search on Virgil Patton turned up one document that led to another document that broke the case open. The first was the contents of a newspaper article attached to a Find-a-Grave entry for Virgil Patton: (see photo 7)

So, the story is out; the shame of the family is understood. By the way, the age of the children is entirely wrong! Continu-ing the search, I found that electronic records had been uploaded for Lawton, specifically Court Records. After a grueling search, with a lot of very interesting information, I found this page in a court proceeding: (see photo 8)

Several mysteries solved, but some remain:

Who is Ruth Louden and what is her ancestry?  Dorothy’s brother, Ralph D. Patton: What happened to him?Do I have any cousins on that side of the family?

And there is one more issue, not a mystery, but an issue. I quickly put together a lot more detail on both Virgil and his brother Curtis. The short version: Curtis died in 1928. He was something of a land specula-tor—the oil kind. He also did work in the oil fields. There is validity to the rumor/family lore that Virgil had something to do with Curtis’ death. The fact that Virgil was drinking and separated from his wife supports the theory that he was despondent over what happened. But the fact remains that he killed his wife and then shot himself. My mother, Dor-othy, also committed suicide. I was 17. Looking back, I guess I can say that her life was one of ups and downs; sometimes really severe ups and downs. And, by the time I found out the above information, it was clear my brother had some kind of psychological problem, later diagnosed as a borderline personality disorder. Nature or nurture? Is there any way to find out? Do I want to find out? (see photo 10)
