Gloria

1. Glory to God, our hearts to you we raise! Joy and peace on earth, in highest heaven praise!

Songs of adoration, Lord, to you we bring, praising your great goodness, Father, heavenly King.

Glory to God, our hearts to you we raise! Joy and peace on earth, in highest heaven praise!

2. Son of the Father, bearing this world’s sin,

Lamb of God, have mercy, grant us peace within. You, O Christ, are holy, you alone are Lord,

with the Holy Spirit evermore adored.

Music: Maccabaeus, G F Handel (1685-1759)

Collect

O God, you declare your almighty power most chiefly in showing mercy and pity:

mercifully grant to us such a measure of your grace, that we, running the way of your commandments, may receive your gracious promises,

and be made partakers of your heavenly treasure; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,

who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and for ever. Amen.

First Reading – Genesis 15.1-6*

The word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision, ‘Do not be afraid, Abram, I am your shield; your reward shall be very great.’ But Abram said, ‘O Lord GOD, what

will you give me, for I continue childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?’ And Abram said, ‘You have given me no offspring, and so a slave born in

my house is to be my heir.’ But the word of the LORD came to him, ‘This man shall

Page 4: Eleventh Sunday after Trinity Sunday 7 August 2016 ...oakhamteam.uk/docs/pewsheet/2016/201608/20160807/...Faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen

4

not be your heir; no one but your very own issue shall be your heir.’ He brought him

outside and said, ‘Look towards heaven and count the stars, if you are able to count them.’ Then he said to him, ‘So shall your descendants be.’ And he believed the

LORD; and the LORD reckoned it to him as righteousness.

Second Reading – Hebrews 11.1-3,8-16

Faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. Indeed, by faith our ancestors received approval. By faith we understand that the worlds

were prepared by the word of God, so that what is seen was made from things that are not visible. By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to set out for a place

that he was to receive as an inheritance; and he set out, not knowing where he was going. By faith he stayed for a time in the land he had been promised, as in a foreign

land, living in tents, as did Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise. For he looked forward to the city that has foundations, whose architect and builder is God. By faith he received power of procreation, even though he was too

old – and Sarah herself was barren – because he considered him faithful who had promised. Therefore from one person, and this one as good as dead, descendants

were born, ‘as many as the stars of heaven and as the innumerable grains of sand by the seashore.’ All of these died in faith without having received the promises, but

from a distance they saw and greeted them. They confessed that they were strangers and foreigners on the earth, for people who speak in this way make it clear that they

are seeking a homeland. If they had been thinking of the land that they had left behind, they would have had opportunity to return. But as it is, they desire a better

country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God; indeed, he has prepared a city for them.

Gospel – Luke 12.32-40

Jesus said to his disciples, ‘Do not be afraid, little flock, for it is your Father’s good

pleasure to give you the kingdom. Sell your possessions, and give alms. Make purses for yourselves that do not wear out, an unfailing treasure in heaven, where no thief

comes near and no moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Be dressed for action and have your lamps lit; be like those who are waiting

for their master to return from the wedding banquet, so that they may open the door for him as soon as he comes and knocks. Blessed are those slaves whom the

master finds alert when he comes; truly I tell you, he will fasten his belt and have them sit down to eat, and he will come and serve them. If he comes during the middle of the night, or near dawn, and finds them so, blessed are those slaves. But

know this: if the owner of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into. You also must be ready, for the Son

of Man is coming at an unexpected hour.’

Post Communion Prayer

Lord of all mercy, we your faithful people have celebrated that one true sacrifice

which takes away our sins and brings pardon and peace: by our communion

keep us firm on the foundation of the gospel and preserve us from all sin;

through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

that the names were incorrectly given in the prayer list, and they are

correctly listed this week. We are sorry for any inconvenience caused.

Traidcraft Sales & Dates

The sales for July amounted to a healthy £256.58 – as ever thank you

so much to all who support the

regular stall. Dates for August are today at Oakham after the 10:30

service and again on 28th, the 4th Sunday this month rather than the

third – a change to the normal pattern as I will be on holiday. Thank you.

Denise (722729).

Oakham PCC

At the PCC meeting on 13 July it was

agreed to proceed with the boiler project following the grant of a

Faculty from the DAC. The boilers will be situated on the north wall of

the parish office. Tenders for the work will now be sought with a view

to starting work in November and completion by Christmas. A Faculty

has also been granted for the Memorial Garden replanting, which

will begin in October. There has been no response from the DAC following their queries about the Clock project,

but letters seeking sponsorship have been sent out locally. A Faculty

application has been submitted for the hanging of the banner of ACM Sir Jock

Kennedy, and it is hoped this can be installed by Remembrance Sunday.

Deanery matters included a report that the Deanery Eucharist on 7 July

was attended by about 90 people. The NSPCC have moved their Christmas

concert booking to Thursday 1 December to avoid late night

shopping on Monday 5 December. Full minutes are available to view by

the North Door at Oakham Church.

Braunston Bats

Braunston Church’s resident population of circa 600 bats are active

again, creating a significant workload during the summer months to keep

the church clean. We urgently need volunteers who can spare an hour or two every month or so to vacuum

floors and clean pews and furniture etc. If you would like to help please

contact Sue Willetts (01572 722150 or [email protected])

or sign up on the sheet in the church.

Stamford Academy

Language Courses

Stamford Academy's 10 week (20

hour) Modern Language Courses are scheduled to start in the week commencing Monday 26 September

2016. Please see the website for further details if you are interested.

Traidcraft

The Traidcraft stall will be present in Church after the 10:30 team service

today. Please do have a look at what Traidcraft has to offer and even if you

don't need to buy anything consider making a donation to the very

worthwhile work of Traidcraft Exchange. If you would like any more

information about the work of Traidcraft in the field of Fairtrade don't

hesitate to get in touch. Denise 722729.

Greenbelt 2016

Families and individuals will be attending

the Sunday morning service at the Greenbelt Festival on Sunday 28 August,

where Archbishop Justin Welby will be answering questions put to him by young
