What we studied: Particles and Interactions.
In the universe, we actually know 4 forces:
- the Gravitational Force, with maybe the Gravitons as mediator particles.- the Electromagnetic Force, with the Photons as mediator particles.- the Weak Force, with the W+ and the W- as mediator particles.- the Strong Force, with the Z Gluons as mediator particles.

The masterclass’s morning : in the skin of a student of physics
In the morning, scientists explained that there different particles and their interactions were.
CERN members may have discovered theHiggs boson :the one that could explain the mass of particles.
At the begining, identifying particles was difficult but step by step we understood how to do it and we enjoyed it .

The masterclass’s afternoon : in the skin of a particle physicist
For two hours we did the job of a real particle physicist. We had to find WW candidates through the particles that were born after two protons had collided.
We consider this masterclass bas a valuable experience even if it was pretty specific.

Detection of particlesWe trained to spot various kinds of particles (like
muon, electron, Higgs boson, neutrino…) thanks to their tracks in the detector..
We found the activity intersting. Thanks to the explanations given at the begining of the afternoon, we managed to find particles. We particulary enjoyed having informations, advices and guidance in English, during the afternoon. Rachel COGNET & Léa CHAMPEYROUX

Assessment of the day:This was very motivating as we learnt some new information about particle physics and CERN.The afternoon was much better since we worked with computers, on data and results from CERN.Afterwards we took part in an international videoconference.
