CELEBITY GONE HAUTE FOR COUTURE

Elie Saab’s phone has been ringing all week with celebrity stylists say-ing they’ll be calling as soon as the Couture pictures are online. Either that, or they’re asking for photos of the dozen or so dresses that ar-en’t appearing on the catwalk. If it doesn’t make it down the runway, it looks custom on the red car-pet, even if if isn’t. That can make the difference when an actress is choosing her gown for the Oscars.

Saab seduced Hollywood years ago. The fashion crowd has taken longer to come around. Insiders saw shades of other designers in his dresses today—floor-skimming capes that called to mind Gwyneth Paltrow’s white Tom Ford from last year’s Academy Awards, demure necklines and long sleeves evoc-ative of recent Valentino collections. What was signature Saab, of course, was the beadwork, this time rendered in tone-on-tone or silvery embroideries on lace and tulle of varying transparencies.

An Ode to Delicateness, he called the collection, and, indeed, with illusion necklines and sheer sleeves, his cre-ations at times seemed to float on the body. Saab used mostly pastels, with a touch of red and black. He’s always favored solid colors; prints have prov-en tricky for him. This time, though, a subtle multicolor floral over-embroi-dered in black beads produced the most charming dresses, especially a three-quarter-sleeve, full-skirted party

Prima Ballerina: Redken’s Guido Palau whipped up cone-like buns to create prima ballerina hair with a neat ‘70s feel at Val-entino.

Blushing bride: Lindsey Wixon wowed in a froth of feathers and flounce in Chanel’s closing dress at their haute couture a/w 12-13 show.

2

Veiled mystery: Hats by Phillip Treacy and midnight blue beaded veils made for a moody beauty at Armani Prive.

3Braided beauties: At Elie Saab Hairstylist Orlando Pita centre-parted hair before braiding and coiling into low buns.

2013 haircuts & hair trends. More personal than even the clothes we

wear, the haircut and colour we choose says much about us. And, like our

clothing, much of that comes down to what’s in fashion each season as well as what suits us best. From the haircuts to get in 2013 through to the best styles

to wear them with, read on for our 2013 hair trends guide.

Defying gravity: Hair became sculpture at Alexis Mabille where updos defied gravity and were topped with brooch dazzlers.

Molto Italiano: Versace’s sultry blow-out sung out the labels ethos; fearless, alluring and molto Italiano.

Whether side parted, center-parted, curled or straight, it’s worth knowing a few basic textured hairstyles for long hair. From grungy, ‘indie’ bags to more slick

interpretations; the fringe has been linger-ing on the hair trends list for several years

Wet look hairstyles were huge on the run-way last year, and yet they’ve maintained their presence for 2013.

For fall 2012 a range of boyish hair-styles flew onto the radar, inspired by the androgynous fashions on the run-way.

THE final day of the couture shows got underway with Elie Saab this morning, a designer whose creations are more than au fait with the red carpet. They sparkle, they shimmer, they shine and they work a striking silhouette into place for the cameras to get papping away. His is that traditional red carpet fashion fodder.

It was pretty with beautiful embroideries and embellishments that splayed out across fitted dresses of lavender and white, fuchsia, faded red, black and baby blue, but at times it felt like there was more than a passing nod to Valentino (which shows its own couture wares off this evening) and there was some-thing lacking of Saab’s own Lebanese bells and whistles, these pieces with more of a European sensibility underlying them.

It was undoubtedly a very pretty collection and was in tune with many of the couture trends we have seen on the catwalk this week – we clocked midi lengths on those elegant and structured dresses (Valli explored that length too), capes and shoulder details (spotted at Val-li and Chanel respectively), and bustier constructions (also seen at Dior and Armani). And it trod the traditional lines of couture, more accessible in its awards season appeal – ballgowns of crystals in cora-lesque formations; white lace flowers strewn between splashes of ir-idescent silver; head-to-toe embellishment; and plentiful swishing skirts – which caused more than one model to slip just ever so slightly.
