Hello!

I’m Eliza. I am a designer from the good ol Pacific Northwest. My interest in architecture and design is deeply rooted through the relationship of humans and their environment. I am intrigued by people and their space - how it functions for them and their particular needs, how they associate with the built environment, and how to optimize a space for specific user groups. I am passionate about the use of local and sustainable materials and the impact they have on the local economy and Earth as a whole. Architecture has the potential to improve daily life for both people and their communities and to benefit the greater society and planet. I am interested in holistic design and construction through adaptive reuse. I am a recent graduate from the School of Architecture & Allied Arts at the University of Oregon with a Bachelor of Interior Architecture and minors in Architecture and Architectural Art History. The following pages hold examples of my understanding of architecture. You’ll find hand renderings, digital renderings, images of 3-dimensional models, sketches, thoughts, and processes. I look forward to continuing to expand my knowledge in the field of architecture and design.

The Tourist Information Center is a place for establishing connections. Its intent is to link people, communities, and cultures and to gain knowledge through interaction. Located on the basement level, curved entrance panels reach forward, enticing people to come closer and see what is down below. Without a landmark, the connection between street level and the TIC is lost and the TIC remains isolated.

Multi-level connections over the entryway providemultiple opportunities to experience the space by a variety of views. Small areas of defined activity branch off of the main circulation path, organizing different zones and creating a straightforward and seamless way-finding system.

September - December 2012Nesting TableApple Plywood, Threaded Rod + Insert, Aniline Dye, Polyurethane.

Furniture ConstructionNesting TableRemovable PartsApple Ply + Aniline DyeCarpentry

Inspired by the form and function of the nesting table, I sought to create a table that moves and adapts to spaces as a person moves throughout their life, one that offers flexibility for various functions. Crux is a table that can adapt to various room arrangements, expanding for additional surface area or minimizing for less square footage. The various heights allow for a great sitting workspace as well as the standard coffee table use. The top table rests on the lower table and with the help of removable legs, can be disassembled for easy packing.

I began with the intent of using

soft shapes, live edges, and full pieces of hardwood. Over the course of the design process, this idea changed as

new materials came to light. Plywood is something that has never appealed

much to me when standing alone. Then during research I came upon some

inspiring plywood pieces and I began to challenge myself with the goal of

making plywood beautiful. I took the plunge with the intent of exposing and

highlighting the striated edges.

The design of the pivoting leg was somewhat challenging, especially trying

to incorporate it with the now rigid style of the design. Eventually a form

emerged based on the action of rotation and over many reiterations the design

began to become a complete whole.

manufacturing process:

Faces- Rip plywood down from original 4’x8’: create table tops + leg faces.- Miter edges.- Dado cut grooves for inner panels to run along.- Glue blocking on lower table faces to accept threaded brass rod receptor. Inner Panels (red faces)- Cut ply into strips for inner panel.- Use band saw to cut angles, belt sand to appropriate line.- Sand smooth- Paint with aniline dye.

Crux Leg- Drill 32 ply circles, sand, and drill larger hole to fit through threaded rod.- Measure and cut threaded rods to leg heights.- Glue up circles on rods.- Sand smooth- Paint w/ aniline dye.

- Water based aniline dye- Polyurethane finish welcomes mess and water without holding stains.
