• Elizabeth Blackwell was born in Bristol, England on February 3, 1821.
• She had eight brothers and sisters who she liked to play with.
• Her family moved to America when Elizabeth was 11 years old.
• First they lived in New York City and then they moved to Cincinnati.
BIRTH/EARLY LIFE
• Her father died three months after they moved to Cincinnati. Then the Blackwell Family was very poor.
• When Elizabeth was a little older, her friend Mary was very sick. Elizabeth visited her to check on her. Mary asked Elizabeth to become a doctor.
BIRTH/EARLY LIFE
• Elizabeth loved to learn. Before he died, her father hired good teachers for his children.
• Elizabeth decided she wanted to go to medical school.
• After being rejected from 29 medical schools, she got accepted to Geneva Medical College in Geneva, NY.
• In 1849 she graduated from medical school. She was the first woman doctor ever!
EDUCATION
• When Elizabeth was older, she adopted a girl named Kitty.
• Dr. Blackwell opened a hospital for poor women and children in New York City in 1857.
• She also opened a medical school for women in 1868.
• She died on May 31, 1910. She died in her home of natural
causes. She was 89 years old.
ADULT LIFE/CAREER
• Elizabeth became the first woman doctor.
• She also started the National Health Society in 1871. It helped people learn how to stay healthy.
• Dr. Blackwell also started the idea of good hand washing and hygiene in hospitals.
ACCOMPLISHMENTS
• Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell was a role model for other women who wanted to become doctors.
• She made hospitals around the world safer because of her ideas about cleanliness and hand washing.
