Game NotesSeason Opener: The Soaring Eagles open the 2014 season against the Monarchs of King’s College. Elmira has seen a great deal of success in season opening games over the last 12 seasons, posting a 10-2 record. In those 12 games, Elmira has outscored their opponents 34-10. Additionally, of Elmira’s 10 wins, four came in the form of one goal vic-tories.

Not in 11 Years: Today’s matchup against King’s marks the first time since the 2003 season the two teams have played each other. Elmira and King’s played a home-and-home series in 2002 and 2003. The Monarchs won both games, each by a single goal, including the 2003 matchup which was decided in extra time.

All Eyes on Bertsch: Elmira lost nearly 95 percent of their scoring from a season ago. Ryan Bertsch ’16, the one re-turner with a goal to his name, should be the main tar-get for Elmira’s offense. Bertsch is the owner of 13 career points on five goals and three assists.

Looking Ahead: Elmira will have a few days of rest before making the short trip to Cortland, NY to take on the Red Dragons of SUNY Cortland on Saturday, September 6th at 7:00 p.m. The Soaring Eagles will return home on Tues-day, September 9th to take on another SUNYAC opponent in Oneonta State at 4:00 p.m.

Game NotesLast Time Out: King’s College enters today’s contest with a flawless 2-0 record after scoring a pair of wins at the Mon-arch-Royal Classic. The Monarchs picked up wins against Neumann University and Penn State Altoona.

Road Opener: Today’s game against Elmira marks the first road contest of the season for the Monarchs. In the last 13 seasons, King’s has gone 4-7-2 in road opening games and have been outscored 15-25 in those 13 games. However, the Monarchs have seen much more success as of late as they have gone 4-1-1 in their last six road opening games.

Croke the Clutch: Niall Croke ’15 has been the Monarch’s go-to guy through their first two contests. Croke boasts a team-leading seven points on three goals and one assist. Of his three goals, two have come in the form of a game-winner.

Looking to Repeat: The Monarch men are coming off a season in which they claimed the Freedom Conference Tournament title and made their first-ever appearance in the NCAA Division III Tournament. Additionally, the Monarch’s 11-5-5 overall record marked the sixth consecu-tive season that King’s has posted a double-digit win season.
