Black Sandy Beach Big Island - Punalu'u Black Sand Beach

Punalu’u Black Sand Beach Park is an actual black sand beach. This is formed when the cold ocean pulverises flowing lava. Back sand beaches are black because many volcanic minerals and rocks are dark-coloured.

Witnessing the steam coming from the Live Volcano and possibly even the actual lava spuing into the ocean is absolutely amazing. Depending on the ages of your children, find out if it is suitable for them to access the walking trail where the lava is visible.

Pearl Harbor / USS Missouri Battle Ship

Pearl Harbor / USS Missouri Battle Ship(Oahu). Learn about (or more about) one of the most memorable US historical events by visiting Pearl Harbor - probably one of the most recognised National Historical Landmarks.

Pearl Harbor has been preserved with four museums that includes an aviation museum with fighter planes and flight simulators, a fully restored World War 2 submarine and a Battleship (USS Missouri - the last Battleship built by the US Navy). This is definitely a must-do for the whole family, particularly if you are from the United States, as this is a great way to teach your children about what happened in one of the biggest events in US history. One, that many Americans can relate to, they may have family who were involved during this horrible period. Visiting Pearl Harbor is a really incredible landmark, and even if you are not American, your family will still thoroughly enjoy seeing the Museums and learning about the efforts were involved and how America was affected in WW2.

Highlight The main Museum was exceptionally constructed and well designed. The boys and girls will get a buzz from stepping onto the US Missouri and stepping down into the submarine.

Volcanoes National Park  (Hawaii Island - The Big Island)

The drive around Hawaii's Volcanoes National Park is breathtaking. You can hire a ca r and d r ive a round yourself, or take a local day tour. You may even get the opportunity to see lush r a i n f o r e s t s , a m a z i n g waterfalls, the black-sandy beach and even possibly actual spewing lava into the ocean.

Hint: Check with the

visitors centre what ages they will allow

in the submarine. By memory, babies

may not be permitted.

Saving Money on Room Service

Whichever way you feel about ordering room service, we have some tips on how to save money and prevent wastage:

Pack a couple of small containers (and sippy type cups or plastic cups) with you to put leftovers like dry corn flakes or fruit for the next meal or snacks for the kids.

Ask room service if bread accompanies the meals and use it as part of someone's meal- after all it is nutritional, and a shame to waste…

Remember to ask Room Service for a bowl of fruit at the beginning of your stay. You will be surprised how many snacks and meal times this will help with.

The same applies for 'sides'.. For instance, if you order a sandwich and it comes with fries, consider splitting the fries with one of the children as part of their meal. A 'chip (fries) sandwich’ is always a hit with kids.

If you are out and about during the day, always buy and bring home beverages (soda, water, juice). That will save you money on room service.

Try to feed the children (and yourself) snacks and small meals whilst you are 'out and about’.  Minimising having the room service be your main meal.

Always bring your nibblies (fruit, crackers, sweets, drinks etc) back to your room. hint: don't go overboard, as this would be considered rather tacky and you may not fit a large number of items in the minibar.

Finally, enjoy the new destination/city that you are in... and try to eat out more! It tends to be less expensive than room service and you take in more of the local culture and experience.

When you travel and stay at hotels with the family, does the thought of room service make you go a little batty?

Or do you relish the thought of not having to go out of the room to get your next meal?

We went searching for some really great children’s journals especially for the purpose of writing about vacations! We did this, really because it is a great way for children to keep occupied during their down-time on vacation, but also to allow them to keep a written account of what they did and what they were looking forward to. They are a great way to capture memories and a great way to help children with their creative writing practice.

Our favorite children’s journal that we found was “The Inspired Vacation Journal”, written by Kim LaCroix.

Why you will like it This journal whilst similar in nature to many other fun journals is fun and captivating in terms of keeping the children entertained. There are many activities that kids can complete that will relate to their holidays.

Firstly, it is spiral bound. This makes writing in it much easier for small hands. There are loads of challenges, reward and prize pages and opportunities for some creative writing.

The best thing about having a vacation journal is having a nice recollection of your child’s experiences with the family whilst on holidays. Imagine being able to recall on this when they have grown.
