In Otley, our Town Council are committed to producing a Neighbourhood Plan, enabling our residents to play a greater role in determining the future of their area. Neighbourhood Planning is not a tool to stop devel- opment but does give communities the opportunity to shape how future planned growth will look and where additional growth might go. How will it Work? The Neighbourhood Plan will be developed by you – the residents of Otley – whether you live here, work here, go to school here, shop here. It is you who knows your community best. It is you who can help identify any key issues we face and any opportunities in or around the town where it would be suitable for housing, business or other forms of community-related development. Our hope is that the Neighbourhood Plan will bring our community together to share ideas and build consensus about needs and priorities for our area. This Plan is important for everyone! You as residents must vote at a referendum to adopt it. If you vote in favour it then becomes a legal document and any decisions on future planning applications will be required to be made in accordance with your Neighbourhood Plan! How can I get Involved? We want to ensure that the Plan is led by the community. As such, a number of ‘Neighbourhood Representatives’ are needed to work with sections of the local community and work with groups such as businesses, services, clubs and so- cieties, young or elderly people. These Neighbourhood Representatives will be supported throughout this process and will work alongside others as part of a team. If you are interested in becoming involved in developing the Neighbourhood Plan then please find details on our website www.otleytowncouncil.gov.uk or contact a member of the Town Council. The Little Green Frog Nursery has recentlyscored very high marks in an "IndependentQuality Assessment" run by Leeds CityCouncil.

We were assessed on the following criteria: Parentsas Partners (10/10); Supporting Children'sCommunication (9/10); Physical Environments(10/10); Children's Learning and Development(10/10); and, Safeguarding Children (3/3).

The assessment process is very rigorous andwe are very proud of our achievement as itrepresents months of hard work.

The nursery has been open for seven years andour experience has enabled us to grow and de-velop to a high standard. We have places avail-able in all areas of the nursery and are open allyear round.

Children who are 3 and 4 are able to take ad-vantage of free places, where they can attendfor up to 15 hours a week during term time andas part of a new government initiative the stan-dard of care offered at the nursery is of a highenough standard to provide free places for sometwo years olds (criteria applicable to this andOtley Children's centre are organising theplaces).

OTLEY BALLROOMAND LATINDANCING

In 2011 Ian was a 20+ stone computer gamejunkie and TV fanatic and said “I couldn’t bebothered”. Embarrassed by his size and theconstant lectures that if he "didn't go to thegym and lose some weight, he would be deadsoon.”

The run leaders helped Ian build his fitnessslowly by running a little, walking a little, thenrunning a bit more and walking a lot less as theweeks progressed. After the 13 week course,Ian’s confidence had blossomed and he went onto complete his first 10K race which was to bethe first of many. Otley AthleticClub

The fact that Otley does not have its own sportscentre has been a bone of contention for manyyears, but that could soon change if plan's beingput together by the town's running club come tofruition.

Otley Athletic Club is looking at building a sportscomplex that will be accessible to the whole town, and be able to host regional sporting events.

The club's Legacy Committee is looking to build amulti-roomed clubhouse along with a runningtrack plus hockey, five-a-side and tennis courtswithin the inner field area.

Chairman of the Legacy Committee SimonAnderson, said: "We already have a site identified, and one of the most attractive features of ourproposal is that it is driven by the people of Otley, yet requires very little financial commitment fromlocal government”.

"We also have our Member of Parliament onthe committee, and we are thrilled that ourparliamentary representative understands andsupports our vision."

Last May, OTLEY SHOW had a very cold day but given the atrociousweather of 2012, with hindsight were grateful to have actually held ashow and one of such excellence.

GOOD SERVICE PREVAILS IN OTLEY“We only give away one prize but in my mind, all the good naturedrivals nominated by the public are winners. The four independent‘mystery shoppers’, volunteered by Otley Rotary Club, touredaround the diverse range of businesses and marked them out of apossible 75 points. The feedback we received was that those onduty, often the person behind the counter rather than the owner, really knew their onions. Most came up with flying colours as helpful, courteous and knowledgeable but only the winner received the full75 points available.

“Following on from 2010 winners, BEKs Electrical and 2011’striumphant Rumblin’ Tum Café, this year’s nominations had a toughact to follow and the findings were that in third place was Weeg-manns Butchers, second place went to James Barber’s Artamis buttop of the tree is the Gay Lane opticians, Lentoid.”

Lentoid employs 12 local people in the manufacture and retail ofspectacles and boasts customers from Scotland, Australia and theBritish Virgin Islands together with Moorfields Eye Hospital in London.

Angela Palmer of Lentoid said. “We are delighted to accept thisaward, we have lots of lovely customers and we try to treat eachof them as we would like to be treated ourselves”.

Mr Bramley of Otley wins the £25 prize for the best nomination letter.

Well done to all 40 businesses nominated.

A record 40 local businesses were nominated for the OtleyChamber of Trade Good Service Award in 2012. Chamber PresidentTim Wilkinson said, “This is the best turnout we have ever hadand it can only be a reflection of how the town feels aboutthe great service that most Otley businesses offer.”

Now that Spring is in sight it might be timely to have a look insideyour shed, garage or outbuilding. Exactly what have you got inthere, power tools, motor mowers, golf or fishing tackle, pedalcycles? I bet when you add up the value of replacing everything inyour shed or garage then it will represent a tidy sum. Once you havedone that then have another look around. What sort of lock haveyou got, is there any security lighting, are your valuable possessionssecured to a ground anchor Or would it be dead easy to break intoyour shed and steal all your gear! The probable reality is, it wouldbe dead easy to break in and we are seeing more and more of thistype of offence. You would be amazed how many people ownpedal cycles worth over £1,000, kept in a shed worth £150, securedwith a £1.50 padlock and then they wonder why they get stolen.Lets take time now to improve the security of our sheds andgarages, have a look on our web site or call us and a local officerwill come out and advise you.

Remember, together, we can crack crime.

David’s philosophy is to only keep the goodstuff, but that needn’t be frightening. Chez Vin’s groaning shelvescarry the full spectrum from a timid wine novice’s delicious ‘2 fora tenner’ bottle of Californian merlot to a £300 McAllan 30 yearold malt whisky, every one a safe bet.

POLICE PURSECHAINS INITIATIVE

A pedestrian bridge which crosses the River Wharfe at Burley-in-Wharfedale has been the object of a long campaign bythe Burley Bridge Association (BBA), which has many supportersin Otley. A bridge would benefit anyone in Otley who likes theoutdoors. The attractive countryside of the Wharfe Valley has anetwork of good footpaths, but the lack of a safe crossing ofthe river between Otley and Ilkley reduces the options for localwalkers.

With a bridge at Burley more choices become available. A studyof the local Ordnance Survey map shows the possibilities ofshorter routes or figure-of-eight circuits. Using public transportfrom Otley increases these choices.

The present campaign by the BBA for a footbridge atGreenholme Farm, Leather Bank in Burley started back in 1996.The design of the latest proposed bridge has been well received. This crosses the so-called stepping stones which carry the rightof way, and which are damaged and usually under water.

An appeal for funds to take the design to a planning applicationwas recently launched in Burley and other villages. There hasbeen a positive response to this with over half of the amountneeded being raised.

Supporters in Otley are invited to contribute to this appeal.Cheques should be made payable to the Burley Bridge Associationand can be sent to the Burley Bridge Appeal, c/o 23 Hall Drive,Burley-in-Wharfedale LS29 7LR. You can also contribute via PayPalon the website at www.burleybridge.com. There is moreinformation on the website about the bridge.

The campaign for a bridge has the support of Otley Town Counciland the walking groups in Otley, including Walkers are Welcome,Otley Walking Festival and Otley Walkers.

PCSO's Pete Andrews and Pete Dakin met with Otley town andcity councilors in the Market Place in December to hand out pursechains. The initiative was a huge success with over 150 chainsbeing handed out. These simple yet effective devices help preventthe theft of purses from inside shopping bags. The chains attachto the purse and then to the inside of the bag, so when someonetries to pickpocket your pocket or bag the chain pulls alerting youand preventing the purse from being taken.

The chains were kindly funded by local councillors and are handedout free of charge. Further dates will be published locally by yourNeighbourhood Policing Team.

April is the month when, with temperatures rising, toads awakefrom their winter sleep beneath logs, rocks, compost heaps or evenburied in soft earth, to head for their breeding grounds. Requiringbigger, deeper ponds than frogs their spawning sites are fewer.Around Otley they can be found at Otley Wetland, York Gate pondand Low Dam but their biggest breeding site is Gallows Hill, oneof the four most important in West Yorkshire. There, numbersusually peak at the end of March or the first week of April whencounts, conducted by torchlight, have reached 900. This is the bestplace to see them and, in the days leading up to spawning, walkersmay find themselves sharing the paths with dozens of ploddingtoads, in some cases a large female carrying an opportunistic malehoping for first mating rights once she enters the water.

Although owner Rick Peacock comes from the wrong sideof the Pennines, in 1981 he saw the light and arrived inOtley to open Chevin Cycles in the shop now called ChevinTrek. In 1991 he moved to the current site, the formerStollcross Garages Opel car showroom. Subsequently he haskept expanding the store, including building offices andworkshops at the rear (that’s right, it’s not a house!) Formany years he had a lot of fun running the famous OtleyFolk Club at a succession of pubs around the town and he

still occasionally plays in his band Last Orders – but don’t worry he’s banned fromstriking up in the shop!

Being sponsors of the massive, nationally regarded Otley Road Race, Chevin staff areproud to enter in Team Chevin colours most years – it’s a tough challenge and only forthe very brave! Ian is the scooter and BMX guru that local youths turn to for trainingtips and advice. Jon, as well as being a former National Single-speed Champion, is verymuch in demand as one of the best Bike-fit technicians in the country.

There are 13 staff at Chevin and all the front of house team are keen cyclists who lovesharing their enthusiasm with customers. They are delighted to help anybody andeverybody solve their cycling dilemmas, whether it’s the local stars of Emmerdale, roadracers or total beginners. Cycling is fun and they want everybody to enjoy it whatevertheir level of ability. (No surprise they are also all great fans of children’s inventor WilfLunn!)
