Pakistani American Demographics Page 6
Preface
Historically, the United States of America have attracted many dif-
ferent groups of people for different reasons from all over the world. The
US, often described as the land of opportunity, have relatively low popu-
lation density, and tremendous economic potential. These physical fea-
tures coupled with the opportunities for free expression, has made the
U.S. a magnet for immigrants. Almost entire US population traces its an-
cestry to ethnic groups in other parts of the world.
For a long time, the U.S. followed the policy of unlimited admit-
tance of immigrants. However, this policy changed into a somewhat re-
stricted immigration policy from the beginning of 20th century.
Over a period of time, the areas of the world contributing the larg-
est share of immigrants to the U.S. have shifted. In 18th century, the
largest numbers of immigrants came from Great Britain and Ireland.
People from western and central Africa and the Caribbean were the
other group of people that came, or were brought in, to the U.S. In 19th
century, most immigrants came from southern, eastern and central
Europe.
Embassy of Pakistan, Washington, D.C. Page 7
In the second half of the twentieth century, the composition of im-
migrants changed once again. The numbers, however, were much
smaller. They included Jews and other groups affected by World War II.
People caught in the conflicts of the Cold War were also allowed to en-
ter the U.S., particularly Russians, Czechs, Cubans and Vietnamese
etc.
Pakistani immigrants started arriving in the U.S. since
1970s. Numerically, the Americans of Pakistani heritage are not very
significant. But they are visible due to their distinct features, culture and
the tendency, common in new immigrant groups, to flock together with
their own kind.
This study is the first methodical and scientifically compiled re-
search on the demographics of Pakistanis and Pakistani-Americans.
This is our first report. We intend to improve and expand its statistical
information and write-ups for subsequent annual editions.
Mohammad Sadiq Deputy Chief of Mission
December 2003
EXPLANATORY NOTES
The data in this study is compiled from various sources: i. Data on foreign-born U.S. citizens and permanent residents is quoted from statistics published by the Census Bureau of the United States. ii. Data on Pakistani-Americans born before 1947, or in third countries, is estimated through a sample survey of the Embassy’s consular record for addition in the overall statistics. iii. Data on the U.S. born Pakistani-Americans, the second or succes-sive generations of Americans of Pakistani heritage is calculated from sample survey of the Pakistan Embassy’s consular record and field sample survey of Pakistani-American families. iv. Data on non permanent resident Pakistanis in the US includes all kinds of visa-holders, visa over-stayers and those who entered the US without any documentations. The data for this group of people is based on statistics published by the U.S. Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Embassy’s consular record and sample surveys.
